Hospitals Trim Meat From Menu

Written by PETA | January 27, 2009

While nobody wants to get sick or injured while traveling abroad, if you’re going to do it, make sure it’s in the U.K. That’s because all public hospitals in the U.K. are proposing to start offering meat-free menus as part of a National Health Service plan to curb the carbon emissions that cause climate change.

These hospitals should be seriously applauded for making progress and doing something positive in the fight against global warming (not to mention cruelty to animals). You don’t have to be a scientist or climate-change expert to know that raising animals for food is the world’s leading cause of carbon dioxide emissions.

PETA’s “naughty nurses”—who have been visiting hospitals around the U.S. urging heart patients to go vegan—obviously endorse NHS’s proposal. Click here to see for yourself!

I wish that canada will follow I remember when I had to stay in hospital when I gave birth they would give me meat free meal there was meat free meals but only for the musilms women still dont get why they would give me a vegetarian meal just because I’m not a muslim… My mom had to bring me food so that I could eat something else other than mashed potatoes…

There are hospitals in the US making this effort as well. I was recently a patient at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey and was very happy with the vegetarian options there. I was there for a week so you can imagine the multiple choices I had.

I wish every hospital that existed would have meat free menus. Im in and out of the hospital A LOT! And the only thing they served me was vegetarian chili… everyday. With such a small vegan menu I was so frustrated and restorted to having food brought from family. I don’t understand how a hospital could take pride in saving lives but then be ok with killing others to feed the sick? Its sad but im excited its starting somewhere. I have no doubt that one day all hospitals will go vegan.

Nicole that is a great idea of course. I heard somewhere that there was a study that prisoners who were fed a vegetarian diet showed less aggression than their meateating counterparts.

I think this is a great idea not only for the option to be availible for vegans vegetarians but since cooked meat has so many carcengens sp?. In addition hospital food should be the healthiest food there is this is a major step to that. Just too bad it’s only the UK! And I agree with nicole meat cost a fortune the cost savings will be tremendous!

this is a great idea… i think another fantastic idea is to stop feeding prisoners meat… think of the cut in cost!!! meat costs a fortune and to cut this out of their diets will save us on taxes and save the innocent animals
