Help Save Tina and Jewel

Written by PETA | October 5, 2007

Update: There was a great investigative report on this issue that was on KHOU-TV this week. Check it out here.

Our Captive Animals department has been working overtime on a case involving two elephants named Tina and Jewel. The elephants belong to Cole Bros., a circus that was assessed a $10,000 penalty by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for abusing elephants with bullhooks. To make a long story short, after confirming a whistleblower report stating that Jewel was emaciated, we filed a complaint with the USDA, leading to the removal of both elephants from the road. But now they are being housed at an unapproved facility in TX, and according to one recent inspection, an elephant expert “determined that both elephants showed an alarming amount of weight loss.”

Cole Bros. is leasing the elephants to the family that formerly operated the King Royal Circus, until its USDA license was permanently revoked when a young African elephant named Heather was found dead in a crowded, overheated trailer. Lovely.

Please help us convince the USDA to confiscate the elephants and relocate them to The Elephant Sanctuary, where they can receive proper nourishment and veterinary care from qualified elephant caretakers. You can take action here.

  • Tina Gipson says:

I’m trying to find the physical address of where these elephants are located. So far I’ve only found a PO box. The SPCA of texas will only help if I can get the physical address in Leggett Texas. Can someone help me?

  • Mr. Chief says:

I have a solution RATATATATATATATATA! To the abusers. Why not?

  • V. Soto says:

Hopefully Tina and Jewel can catch a break like Maggie f i n a l l y did thanks to pressure from PETA and other animal groups! I was disappointed to see that ABC’s “The Bachelor” featured Ringling Brothers Circus as a site for one of the Bachelor’s group dates on Monday night’s episode. Yes I know I know…. the show is super cheesy but I was still disappointed nonetheless. I sent a complaint email to

Hi Delilah! It was so extra precious to read your post! Knowing that an 11 year old has so much compassionate insight and makes so many selfless efforts to help the animals well you certainly have it all over a lot of “adults” who make nasty comments on here about the animals. “Only” 11 years old but so much wiser beyond your years. Keep up the good work sweetheart! You are a wonderful inspiration!

  • Carla says:

USDA Tina and Jewel need to be free or at least live out the rest of their lives in a Sanctuary that have qualified elephant caretakers to go over their well being. They’re probably not being fed a proper diet or are just so depressed that they are unwilling to eat. Lets not see the same fate as Heather and countless others like her. It must have taken months for an animal that size to die in those conditions. This is not only cruel but someone should be held accountable. This is criminal in my mind.

  • Judith, Freedom Fighter says:

Will they ever leave these gentle giants alone? In Thailand they force these beautiful elephants to play soccer. WTH. 2 became so upset that they turned over a truck. That is when the beatings began. I could not watch this horror anymore. These people are nothing but trash by the way many Americans where watching this cruelty taking place. Delilah you are doing such good things for the animals we are so very happy to have you here with the good people on this board just ignore the bad ones they come here to cause trouble they try their best to bully us so pay no attention to them. Judith peace

it sickens me that people like this actually excist! i thinks its gross and needs to be stop but really in the long run it probably wont happen cause thats the society we live in its almost like trying to end world hunger

  • Delilah says:

I love animals so much! I may only be 11 but I have helped over 30 shelters. I really want to help dsave animals.

  • Ana says:

Good Steve I agree! But it is the culpability of the US bureaus and insatiable human greed that contrubutes to these beautiful creatures’ suffering and abuse. Some of course die from these awful conditions. Seeing an elephant dressed in lace in a circus is both deplorable and sad.

  • Shannon M says:

A friend of mine asked me to come down to Houston because she had an interview with the reporter who did a story on them last week. He didn’t use the interview but did a great piece on them not slanted in their favor from where they are staying. Watch here httpwww.khou.comtopstoriesstorieskhou071004acelephants.13a4a2d89.html

  • alex says:

    totally so cruel

  • Stacie says:

How can elephants and other wildlife tigers lions chimps be permanently banned from these horrible circuses? Having seen the popularity of the allhuman no animal Cirque du Soleil I feel these circuses need to have these animals removed for rehab and relocation.

  • The Good Steve says:

I’ve been among wild elephants who have incredibly rich social and personal lives and are a total kick to watch. And I’ve seen elephants in sanctuaries regaining some of their lost grandeur finding a bit of peace on this earth. But to see these poor souls Tina and Jewel hanging on by a thread well it’s just heart breaking. We really need to win this one get busy with those emails!

  • Susannah S says:

These poor elephants. That such stately dignified and gentle beings are made to endure such a terrible life is heartbreaking. I hope they will be relocated to Elephant Sanctuary and that all circus animals will soon be rehomed to sanctuaries where they can live out their lives in peace.

  • Rosalva Saldana says:

I love animals a lot and i hate reading sad stories that happen to them i really hope animal cruelty will stop soon and i will be helping out as much as i can so no other animal has to suffer or go through what others have
