Goodbye, ‘Mr. Clean’

Sad news—House Peters Jr., the man we all know and love as Mr. Clean, passed away yesterday at the respectable age of 92.

I pretty much love the character of Mr. Clean. In a world of cleaning-product commercials featuring only women, Mr. Clean’s gender-stereotype–defying presence was always refreshing. (Plus, he had an earring, which is cool—and pretty progressive for the 1950s, when the character premiered!)

What I don’t love, though, is the company responsible for the product Mr. Clean—Proctor & Gamble (P&G), the infamous maker of animal-tested Iams! PETA’s problem with P&G goes back pretty far—far enough, in fact, for us to have parodied Mr. Clean’s image on a 1998 protest door hanger.

But that wasn’t enough to convince P&G to stop abusing animals in the name of “research.” While P&G has developed non-animal testing methods and worked to end much of its outdated testing program, even today, eight years later, P&G–owned Iams continues to keep up to 700 dogs and cats locked inside hidden laboratories.

So as we say goodbye to Mr. Clean, we urge you to honor his memory by, say, wearing white T-shirts and gold earrings—not by purchasing Iams.

Thank you for this info. I will never buy another P&G product again.

“Mr. Clean’s gender-stereotype–defying presence was always refreshing” … I’m not so sure Mr. Clean defied gender-sterotyping.. in fact Mr. Clean embodies the dominant male figure in society. The housewife present in all advertisements is inadequate at completing her ‘household duties’ without the help of buff Mr. Clean. He does none of the work in any of the commercials, yet reaps all the credit.

I’m sad to know that this happened & probably still is by them & other companies as well….and as much as I don’t like harming animals when we have mice in our house don’t we try to catch them/most of the time killing them? (because they carry bacteria etc)…but what about the other animals that’s true!! but your post is from 2008, has P&G improved since then? I’m curious. thanks.

can’t wait till i move out. parents think I’m AR loony and still use puketer+gamble I’m sorry ProcterGamble. Got them to stop using Iams when I pointed out Pedigree was cheaper.

  • SASHA says:

HERE IT IS. THE EMAIL I GOT FROM PGIT GOES AS FOLLOWS I’m sorry but the exact number of animals used in our testing is proprietary because we are a company that markets drug products. Information of this type could be advantageous to competitors so we don’t release it it might give competitors an idea of what type product we’re working on. I will say the vast majority of our testing however does not include animals. Animal testing is the exception not the rule. It’s only considered after every other reasonable option has been exhausted. Also the majority of the animals used for animal research are rats and mice. The remaining animals used for animal research are guinea pigs rabbits hamsters and ferrets and others. Thanks for writing back. AlisonPantene TeamE EMAIL FROM PG

  • Amber says:

Carla could you tell us what you’re feeding your dogs? I haven’t had much luck getting mine on a vegan diet but I’m very hopeful that I can find the right one for them someday!

PG is so disgusting! I hate them so much!!!!!!!

  • TINA says:

SASHA MAY I SEE THE EMAIL FROM PG.I AM IN THE PROCESS OF WRITING THEM A LETTER MYSELF.THEY MAKE ME SICK.

  • Stephanie Smith says:

I boycotted PG about 5 years ago after someone left a brochure in my mailbox on PG and the animal testing they do. I’ve since done more research and find this company very repulsive. I refuse to buy or use any products made by this company and often when in the cleaning aisle at my local store will say loudly to whoever I’m with “I don’t use “Febreeze Tide Mr. Clean etc” They test on animals. That’s sick.” Gotta spread the word

  • Carla says:

Rest in Peace now Mr. Clean I wish I could say the same for Proctor Gamble!! STOP gambling with animals’ lives!! My two rescued dogs have lived on a vegan diet their whole lives including my rescued quail lol Joker’s 8 and Thor a doberman mix is 18 yes eighteen and in tip top shape! There’s no need to kill anything in order to live!! So live and let live in a guilt free kinda way and you’ll do your body and your pets a favor. They are two males and docile as can be thanks to a veg diet!! And Thanks to SASHA can you try and post the email?

  • SASHA says:

WOW! I DIDN’T KNOW THIS! PG MAKES ME SICK. I EMAILED THEM AND GOT A RESPONSE. THEY NAMED ALOT OF THE ANIMALS THAT THEY TESTED ON. AND WHEN I EMAILED THEM BACK ON THE ISSUE OF DOGS AND CATS THEY WOULDN’T TELL ME IF THEY DID. THEY DIDN’T SAY THAT THEY DIDN’T. SO I TOLD THEM I WOULD BE BOYCOTTING THEM FOR NOT TELLING ME. I KEPT THE EMAIL IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT. THE LIST OF ANIMALS THAT THEY TEST ON WAS AWFUL. BOYCOTT PG!

  • Keely Ryan says:

Stop testing testing on animals there is absolutely no need for it! Especially for a cleaning product!
