Should Your Favorite Band Have a New Name?

Name

You heard about the request for Pet Shop Boys to change their name to the Rescue Shelter Boys, right? Well the Boys aren’t the only group we think could use an animal-friendly makeover. The following groups could too:

  • Meat Puppets: Maybe as the Tofu Puppets, they can make a grungy comeback.
  • Meat Loaf: Meatloaf, do us and your colon a favor and change your name to Lentil Loaf.
  • Cattle Decapitation: As a band full of vegetarians, we think this death metal band would go for a change to Cattle Appreciation.
  • Deerhunter: Wouldn’t you say it’s about time for this acclaimed indie band to change their name to Deerhugger?
  • Leathermouth: I like what I’ve heard from peta2′s Sexiest Vegetarian winner Frank Iero’s band, Leathermouth. But I’d love Pleathermouth.
  • The Stray Cats: The Stray Cats are known for helping pioneer the rockabilly scene, but they would be known for helping spread a positive message with a new name, The Spayed Cats.
  • Skinny Puppy: Given their vocal stance on animal rights, such as with their anti-vivisection song “Testure,” Well-Fed Puppy is an obvious choice.
  • Reel Big Fish: Fish? What fish? I have no idea what you’re talking about. If you’re talking about the adorable creatures of the sea with whiskers, you must be talking about Real Big Sea Kittens.
  • Pig Destroyer: Because pigs are such amazing animals, Pig Defender just makes more sense.

Musicradar.com, keen to help PETA with our campaigns, has its own list suggestions too—some of which even overlap with ours! Hmm, which is better: “Real Big Sea Kittens” or “Reel Big Fish In A Suitably Large Tank With Adequate Room To Swim”? Decisions, decisions.

So which bands do you want to see change their names?

Re: Dani. While this article is meant to have a tongue-in-check tone, the issues are serious nonetheless. Why not use the name of a band to promote compassion to animals, rather than to reinforce the message of violence? With so many devoted fans, these bands have the unique opportunity to change many people’s opinions about animals.

Re:Peta – how does the name “Reel Big Fish” promote violence toward animals?

  • Dani says:

    PETA,

First off, I’ll say that I love PETA and what the organization does for animals. When I first read this article, I thought it was a intentional joke, as in funny ha-ha, from PETA, written purely for amusement and to raise awareness. However I find this article harmful and stupid, for two reasons. First, I don’t think that these bands, in any way, promote animal violence. I have listened to all of these bands and frequently enjoy three of them, and I am a vegetarian and have no desire to eat meat, go fishing, or hunt deer as a result of listening to them. To say that their names “promote violence towards animals” is illogical and stupid, especially after considering the points that this very article makes about Cattle Decapitation’s anti-meat industry stance and Skinny Puppy’s anti-vivisection views. Second, this kind of article actually harms animal rights, because when omnivores and anti-animal rights people see and hear about these kinds of things, they think, “Jesus, those PETA people really are crazy, overzealous crackpots. I don’t want to have anything to do with them”. These bands have built their reputations on the names that they were established as; to ask them to change (and possibly sabotage their own careers) based on the idea that their names encourage violence towards animals when there is no evidence to support that notion is stupid.

Re: Angry. This is not censorship: PETA has not enforced these name changes, but is simply encouraging them. And PETA does so with good reason. These musicians and bands–each of whom are followed by a strong fan base–have names that promote violence towards animals. PETA encourages them to slightly alter their names to make a big impact for animals.

  • Angry says:

First off, I want to apologize that my comment may not be relevant since this article is already old.

I support the fact that you guys take a stand against animal cruelty but when it comes to messing with music and asking people WHO HAVE TALENT to change their names to suit your desires?

I have to say that is disgusting. In the best way, that’s pure censorship. Kind of like what the rest of our pathetic country does to the arts.

    Happy Holidays.

Personally Cattle Decapitation is my favorite band. It’s great to hear a band of such extreme intensity and know that they are V. But yeah maybe there name should be different. A lot of people get confused especially activists.VegansVegeetariansand animal loversWhen I tell them about Cattle Decapitation. They think I’m being sarcastic. Although I don’t think Cattle Appreciation is a good name for a band playing this style of music. But perhaps there is another name they could go by to catch people’s attention and to spread the word about how it is wrong to be cruel to animals. As for Pig Destroyer… I didn’t even know they were V until I read this. Maybe Slaughterhouse Industry Decapitation or Slaughterhouse Industry Destroyer would be a better idea.

Ops! My favorite band is the Pato Fu. In Portuguese “pato” means duck and “Fu” means fight such as kungfu. They can defend !!!

  • Rorkimaru says:

They spayed cats? I don’t think that the band would like to give off the impression that they have all been sterilized…

  • kiera says:

really? leathermouth is one of my most favorite bands and i see no reason why they should change their name. yes iero is a strict vegetarian but what does that have to do with what he decides to call his band? it’s just a name they’re not telling people to skin cows. it’s about the music if people want to ignore them because of their name well then it’s their loss.

Some of these are really smart XD

    joseph by asking really nicely.

  • chris says:

I think has gotta be a joke right? I think many of these band names are meant to be ironic like Joy Division. I don’t think any of those guys condone Nazi soldiers rape missions. All in good fun PETA.

  • kitty says:

xD Skinny Puppy has its name because the vocalist sang songs from the view of a dog that is starved to death in a laboratory. Their band name is heavy antivivisection.

  • Hannah Turnbull says:

the band sick puppies should change its name

  • Brenda says:

i love frank iero so i really want him to change the name of his band.
