Father Attempts to Sell Son on Craigslist

Written by PETA | March 26, 2010

Cops in Spokane are searching for a frustrated pop who is believed to have put his screaming son up for sale on Craigslist. Apparently the dad didn’t know that the “baby & kid stuff” section is intended for the sale of clothing, furniture, and accessories only—and that peddling children is a felony.

But dogs and cats, well, they’re a different story. While Craigslist agreed to post a warning about the dangers of “free to a good home” ads few years ago, it has refused to disallow them, so a quick scan of the “free stuff” listings reveals dozens of unwanted, unloved, and “inconvenient” soon-to-be homeless animals. And many of these ads read almost identical to daddy dearest’s “free toddler” post: “I don’t know what else to do other than find a good family with kids or a couple that wants a son. I just won’t give him to anyone.”

Make no mistake: PETA encourages adoptions of dogs, cats, rabbits, gerbils, and other companion animals to responsible, thoughtful, competent, and loving adult guardians—but not just anyone. Simply to hand the leash—and the dog—to the first smiling stranger who pulls into the driveway is not enough to ensure the safety of the animal. Anyone who offers an animal up for adoption should personally visit the home of the potential guardian beforehand and follow up on the adoption later. Bunchers and other cruel humans are all too eager to get their hands on cast-aside cats and dogs from unsuspecting persons looking to find new homes for animals—and the fates of these “free” animals are often tragic.

We’ve contacted Craigslist about this important issue, and now the site’s managers need to hear from you.

Hi, I started a group on Facebook called FLAGGING Animal Sales on CraigsList, https://www.facebook.com/groups/F.Them/ . You are welcome to join and re-post ads. Thanks

    stupid!

  • Jim Turner says:

I would rather then give them to a good family then to mistreat them. I would guess every case is different but if they are truly trying to find a good home for the pet what is the problem?

  • emma says:

I did a bit of research on this craigslist ive never heard of it before so i wanted to know more Anyway i went on to craigslist uk and couldnt find anything to do with selling animals however i then went on to craigslist new york and sure enough right under the community section there is a pet option When i clicked on it was a big list of animals for sale from 8 week old kittens to lost and found cats puppys to older dogs Theres a baby persian kitten free to good home Theres brother and sister kittens for sale all the way from jamaica Theres people wanting a papillon and labrador dogsTheres even pythons listed. Theres a warning that someone posted about an ad a womanplaced looking for small dogs that stated she was a backyard breeder and she has been arrested for abuse of animals. The list goes on and on for a further 100 posts and that was just on the ny site theres many other city and town area sites. Just wanted to clear that up for the person that said craigslist do not sell animals.

I just don’t understand how people can do things like that to innocent animals. If they do it to animals what’s stopping them from hurting themselves or other people too?

Thank you for this info on horses oogachacka. I don’t like what they are doing to horses at all. I was at work one day and of course my job has CNN on all day. Well on this particular segment they had farm animals in Florida being butchered for cheap meat but it included horses. The horses were eating trash to survive and exposed nails were all around. My Gd please do something about this for both children and animals. Anyway it was horrible but they were starving those animals while they ate in front of them. There is a man down there who fought to get local enforcement involved but they needed police back up to do it. Well this man got it done I just hope they are cracking down on this right now as it made everyone sad and disgusted. I wrote the senator and governor down there as well to make sure that cruelty allowed only breeds more cruelty.

  • John says:

oogachacka first of all you are saying that child porn websites have no culpability? Craig has known that these tortures have been going on because of his website. His big ego means he does nothing. He could be changing the way it operates. People have been identifying the problems. He does nothing. Except make a bunch of money. As far as the horse world you know well that there are breeders overbreeding people selling horses to those who they know can’t care for them properly and not taking them back! and not enough humane laws protecting horses and ensuring proper standards. This is not just the economy. These problems were going on before the economy tanked! And slaughter dealers are picking up horses from craigslist. You and your fellows could be doing something about it. Your industry does nothing.

  • oogachacka says:

Also The whole horse thing is another issue. I am kind of connected to the professional horse world and it seems that in this day and age with the economy like it is a lot of people are bringing their horses to shows and leaving them in the stalls. It is happening a lot at auction too. Nobody can afford to take care of the animals. I think this is a much bigger problem than attempting to sell it on craigslist.

  • oogachacka says:

As far as I know craigslist does not allow the sale of animals. I tried to find a pet via craigslist and it was impossible minus the exceptions of those with rehoming fees. I would not place the blame on the creator of the website but rather the people using it. Saying that craigslist is a “torture chamber for animals” is quite a stretch. Can we please remember that the internet is not a real space? And the animal existing on craigslist does it no physical harm in itself? There are measures that can be taken to prevent the wrong people from getting their hands on these particular animals. But I would not start by accusing a website.

  • RR says:

This link also has very helpful information for reporting these tax cheat law breaking breeders and animal dealers You can adapt it to your own state by researching similar government departments etc httpwww.columbusdogconnection.comReportingPupMill.htm

  • Jenn says:

On my local Craigslist section I’ve seen far too many ads making easy use of “rehoming feeadoption” on litters of PUPPIES. Come on craigslist this sort of thing is breeding for money. I’ve flagged several for this sort of creative mislabeling. It also troubles me how many horses are on craigslist. People seem to treat horses like project cars get bored get a new one.

  • liz says:

Craigslist is an animals worst enemy. It should be illegal to sell or give away animals to strangers. These con artist look trustworthy and turn around and abuse these poor animalsneglect them or breed them for profit. Animal hoarders are also regular to this stupid site. Never ever sapport anything on this site.

  • Joanna says:

I see the exact same puppy seller on CL over and over. They post an 8 week puppy for sale get flagged and post again. Everyday sometimes two or three times aday. I called this poster to check them out myself. Without any apology these folks are selling designer puppies for $450…cash only will meet you somewhere to show the puppy. Period. They are pimping dogs on CL. But you cannot stop them. Agrrevating.

  • Trudy says:

Another problem on craigslist is that certain No Kill advocates are picking up beloved pets from animal control listing them on craigslist and then handing them over to any psychopath who answers the ad. Then they brag that they have “saved a life.” The animal gets tortured or killed and they pretend it’s all ok. We all need to make sure that our local animal control only deals with 501c3 inspected rescues that are regularly checked on.

  • John says:

If anyone wants to help animals while sitting at home on their computer they can comb through craiglist ads for their area and 1 contact and warn people listing animals and 2 flag animal sale ads.

  • John says:

Dog Fighters and puppy mill breeders get animals from Craigslist. Sadists are getting animals from craigslist. Animal research buyers are getting pets from craigslist. Craigslist is behind major animal abuse. Craigslist is the quivalent of a torture chamber for pets. They are responsible for it because of a man like Craig who only cares about making as much money as he can any way he can. Puppy mill breeders and dog fighters are also selling animals on craigslist and pretending to be rescuers or shelters
