European Union to Go Seal-Fur-Free?

Today, we’ve got great news for seals and bad news for the people with the spikey-tipped sticks! According to the Daily Mail, the EU has announced that a fur import embargo will be drawn up in the next few weeks. Yippee!

So, thanks to all of you who responded to PETA’s call to action and contacted the EU about this issue!

That’s another 27 countries that will most likely cut ties with an industry that bludgeons and skins baby seals alive. With European ports closed to seal fur, Canada’s barbaric annual seal hunt may just come to an end. Kinda makes you want to sing “Another One Bites the Dust,” doesn’t it?

We are confident that EU leaders are finally starting to turn away from the annual torture of defenseless baby seals on Canada’s ice floes each spring just to benefit Canadian fishers. Well, the whole world’s watching you now, Canada, and the next move will be yours.

I love PETA. PLEASE GO TO UTUBE AND CHECK OUT THE COMPLETE TORTURE EMOTIONALLY OF A CAT IN A CAGE. THE NAME OF THE WEB CAM IN HELL CAT OR “VERY ANGRY DEMON CAT” I have flagged the site but it is still running. Please help speak up against this type of animal cruelty. Thank you.

PETA has tried to get a “PETA Canada” started but the good old Canadian government has blocked it from happening probably because they know the seal hunt would be the first thing on the agenda. Apparently PETA could be successful if they took the matter to court however it would be very costly and the money could be spent elsewhere especially since there are already many many PETA “USA” members in Canada who are very active in animal rights I am one of them. Way to go PETA and all other animal rights individualsgroups for continuing the fight against the seal hunt! Every country that bans seal products is another step toward ending the hunt unfortunately the only way the Canadian government is going to stop the seal hunt is if it finally affects the bottom line $$$ too much.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will be billing the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans $1000.00 per day for every day that the Farley Mowat is unlawfully held by the department. The ship was taken by armed government thugs in international waters on April 12th 2008. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society considers this to be an act of high seas piracy and is confident that the case against the Captain and the First Officer of the Farley Mowat will result in a victory for the defense.

This is big FU to the Canadian seal butchers!! Way to go Europe!!! We also need to thank the ONLY organization that goes on to the ice every year to confront these seal killers and thats Sea Shepherd What great news!

  • Kris Shulfer says:

how great!! thanks to everyone who participated in this crusade. it is wonderful news!!

  • Pamela L. says:

This is a wonderful victory for the baby seals and all the other seals that have to look on to this barbarity. When I collect petitions to Ban Seal Hunts in Canada only 2 or 3 out of 100 will turn me done. This is usually because they are so worried that the sealors need the income. There is no rationalization for this horror. As great as this victory is we will never become complacent!

  • Maureen says:

Wowmy first first march for the seals was way back in the sixtiesthis really is fantastic news. The Canadian government deserves this well aimed slap in the face.We really have to thank Paul Watson and Brigette Bardot and many others who have battled for decades against this mass butchery!!

  • Carolina Rosado says:

Im new to PETA. What can I do to contribute to stop the killing of seals in Canada?

  • Judith says:

Aneliese You are absolutely right. PETACANADA is a perfect idea! And I for one have no dislike of Canada. Both of our countries have major problems with animal welfare the horrific abuse of animals is universal. On our PETA board many of our beloved posters are from Canada and they are simply wonderful. We will get this done together. As they say divided we fail. We will not let that happen. We will work together. Peace for all animals!

  • FREE TIBET says:

    GREAT better late than never!

  • Carla says:

This is wonderful news!! But I have to agree with gemc! All over the world animals suffer greatly at the hands of souless beings and untill people stop supporting brutal industries like the wearing of sealskin fur fur from fur baring animals leather wool ect ect it will continue! I live in Canada and I can tell you I’ve have my share of sweat and tears to end the senceless sooo unnecessary murder of innocents and although this is huge victory I WILL continue to do what I can to spare these wonderful creatures anymore suffering!

  • Courtney says:

Keep up the pressure PETA! I am a Canadian and totally disgraced with the seal slaughter that goes on every year! One day I would love to know that our country which is generally known for our peace keeping extends our compassion for all life..including defenceless baby animals.

  • Aneliese Krulicki says:

I’m Canadian and I’m a member of PETA too. I’ve signed countless petitions sent emails etc. to help stop the seal hunt. Canada isn’t a “bad” country really every country is bad the horrible amount of puppy mills operating in America for instance and the dolphin slaughters in Jaan but I’m dissappointed that the seal hunt is all that Canada seems to be to PETA. Perhaps more Canadians would be against the seal hunt like me if there were any kind of animal rights organization in Canada. Yes I mean something like a PETA Canada. Why not? There’s PETA Germany and PETA AsiaPacific right? Anyways I’m just trying to say that everyone can hate the seal hunt but don’t hate the whole country I’m part of it and I’m proud to be Canadian. I’m doing all I can to help stop this hunt!

  • Kat says:

Great news!! PETA you are on a roll Thank you so much for all of your hard work

  • gemc says:

this is excellent news.. now.. next.. since all the other animals suffer no less.. ie they are still continued to be skinned alive electrocuted caged up etc how about banning completely and totally ALL animal fur in the EU.. ! not just a particular species but all animal species.. as far as I’m concerned the ban on seal furs is only a partial ban when you take into account all the other animals who suffer just as horrendous a fate as the seals .. ie. raccoon dogs are also clubbed and skinned alive.. not to mention a lifetime caged up.. the EU needs to look at the wider picture.. the fur trade is so abominable.. it has to be or should be banned outright altogether.. forever.. period..

  • roxanne says:

sorry about the moosehead comments. Mooses are cute and kind of phallic. but canada you are sick. I still hear those mother seals crying as their babies are bash in their head. WTF???? it reminds me of when my mom cried when she though she lost me in the store when I was six year old. the cry of loss and pain are the same for all mothers across all species. Canada should be ashamed of itself

  • Mike Quinoa says:

Can it really be true? While a lot of groups worked hard on this I think special mention has to be made to Captain Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society for just plain never giving up. This will be a huge blow to the Canadian seal fur industry and hopefully the final nail.

  • roxanne says:

Canada you mooseheads get with the program. End the cruelty or the EU and USA will look at you as barbaric cave people

  • Judith says:

This is a beginning! Many people of Canada are fighting very very hard to end this horrific slaughter. But their government is almost as bad as our administration. They are all in someones pocket living off of blood money. And boy do they love blood money. Monsters all of them. Come on Canada it’s your move we know you can do it! Peace for all animals!

  • Maya, CVT says:

That is excellent news great work PETA!! Keep up the pressure so we never have to worry about this brutal practice ever again!
