EU Seal Fur Ban Upheld

It’s official: The European Union doesn’t want to import the pelts—or any other parts—of slaughtered baby seals. Compassion has won out, and the EU’s historic ban on the sale of seal-derived products will remain in place, despite the seal slaughterers’ last-ditch attempt to stop it.

With basically an entire continent and countless kind people around the world boycotting products that come from bashed baby seals, we hope that Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper will finally realize that the seal slaughter is both inhumane and unprofitable. Let’s encourage him to finally put an end to Canada’s shameful seal slaughter!

Canada, US, and Greenland all allow marine mammal harvesting for a good reason. If you’re gonna advocate for destroying these practices, than I am equally allowed to destroy your cell phone, and television, and sports car, and victorian house, and 9-5, and your very lifestyle. You talk about ethical treatment, what about the millions of chickens that are raised in close quarters all their life just to be slaughtered. Yes. Killing seals for commercial and aesthetic purposes is bad. But there are reasons harvesting seals is allowed.

Wonderful news!! Let’s keep the pressure on those in Saskatchewan to abolish this bloody practice!

GREAT NEWS. Progress is good. 🙂

I’m Canadian, and proud… but this is the first time I haven’t been. I don’t think many people actually think about this, or talk about it in Canada, or else some of us would have definitely started a protest.

its taken soo long and soo many little creatures have suffered unimagineable pain at the hands of ‘hu’man kind..thats the wrong word here but you know what im getting at.. but finally the world is beginning to understand that the wiping out of animals is having a disasterous effect on the world its self. we have to live in harmony with plants and animals coz if we dont… when it all comes to an end who will we blame for it all going wrong?

  • Janet says:

Thank you every body who fought for this, I love you!!! And I really love the seals, thank god something good happened for the animals today(-:

FYI – Broke my heart – Afew weeks ago looking for a support system on this side of the border I thought of Canadian Wildlife Federation, assumed they would not be in support of such an abomination and destruction, so I clicked. Surprised & saddened by what I’ve copied and pasted the email contents of the email I sent and the reply that was returned to me by CWF… Name : Lorri Subject relates to : Wildlife conservation Question or comment : I am wondering if your site is Canadian Government funded. Or are strictly self funding as a charitable organization. I see you have a picture of a seal on a donate link, but I cannot express how terribly saddened I am to come to this site for information that I think I am entitled to know on a member species of Canadian wildlife, being Seals & find no information on this site. I am a Canadian adult who just very recently learned of the Canadian Seal Hunt. This has had me in tears and feeling ashamed for months I would think since my country kills so many of them each year and you have a picture of a seal on a donate button, and since they are included in our species of wildlife they are worth mentioning. How very very sad and a huge injustice for an animal that shares our country and has always gone through so much to just live as the wildlife they were meant to be. I find out more each day that its these omittences of information is why I am an intelligent adult who has just learned of such a tragic event. I would have hoped that being Canadian Wildlife Federation this would have been a place of truth to come to for this info. Hi Lorri, Thank you for your email. CWF is an entirely non-government and non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring an appreciation of our natural world and a creating a lasting legacy of healthy wildlife and habitat. We fund critical wildlife research, inform and educate Canadians, advocate responsible human actions and represent wildlife on conservation issues. In fact, just last year as a part of our endangered species program here are just some of the funding opportunities we were able to make a difference for: Although CWF does not take issue with legal hunting, as a conservation organization we are concerned with making sure that populations in the wild are stable and healthy. If your primary concerns for wildlife are centered on the seal hunt, I can recommend that you get in touch with animal welfare organizations, as they best voice these specific concerns. IFAW sincerely addresses this issue. Lorri, I hope this email has helped to answer some of your questions about CWF, and thank you again for contacting CWF. SEALS Worldwide FINALLY GET A Further CHANCE TO GROW OLD – ALL COMMERCIAL SLAUGHTER STOMPED BY EUROPEAN UNION & World Trade Organization JUDGE – IF PM Harper, DFO Officials, and Trades Minister, Stockwell Day had left well enough alone and not wasted 10 million to fight ban & $75,000 to a Toronto firm to play the role of big brother (so I guess I’ll say CHEESE) – spying on blogs, anti seal hunt websites, FB & Twitter to view discussions and posts, our country could have used that money to uh, I don’t know – house some homeless seeing as winter is almost here, implement change in the economy, introduce job training for Atlantic Canadian Fishermen, accepted outside help from other countries has been offered – Only If we stop the commercial slaughter of seal pups & their parents. Traditional Inuits who live traditional Inuit cultural lives are entitiled to their survival. They waste nothing and are not cruel, they appreciate what the seals provide them with. They account for 2% of seals killed in Canada yearly. The Atlantic Commercial Seal Hunt is a vulgar display of inhumane & cruel destruction of wild life and unfortunately reflects to some, that traditional Inuit hunting is carried out in this manner, this is false. Time for the Government to truly do what they need to do to take care of their people, all people – while leaving barbaric rituals of the 19th century behind and take positive steps to undo the already obvious damage of reputation and financial impact to reverse the boycott of all other Canadian Products which ultimately has affected the country province to province, straight across the board.

I received news of this at 6:00 am. I am active in the Martimes supporting PETA and the end of the Seal Hunt. I receive negative remarks all the can one person make a difference ? Uhmmm…sorry but we can. One voice at a time until we create a thunder so loud they have to listen. Thanks PETA ! We will continue to be heard ! Come on keep up the pressure !!

  • pj56 says:

Soooo happy to finally see this being upheld. Thank you PETA. I have always boycotted, signed petitions and suggested to our local fish departments to please stop importing Canadian fish products. Nice to see some progress for our beautiful seals.

  • AJ says:

Please STOP the slaughter of the baby seals. what did they do to deserve such inhumane treatment. when they become extinct then what will we do then?

  • Alex Jeikner says:

It was about time steps were taken to end practices that have shed a barbaric light on a civilization supposedly so progressive. Hopefully things will continue improving so that future generations will not disapprovingly categorize us as even worse than people in prehistoric times – they at least bashed down animals for food or clothing. We don’t have that excuse.

That’s excellent! Here in Israel we got an issue with fur, since religious people’s outfits (specifically hats) are traditionaly made from fur. There is a new law limiting the fur trade in Israel, but it’s not enough. Perhaps with more nations boycotting fur products, pressure would be put on our government too

  • Gav says:

Well, it’s truly about time. Now to stopping it completely!

  • Krystiana says:

Thank you EU for this monumental ban that will protect the innocent baby seals from this cruel, inhumane, and unnecessary practice. Let us keep up the fight and pressure the Canadian government to take strict action against this practice! Hopefully the United States will come to it’s senses as well and help to fight for the rights of not only seals but countless other animals within ,and out of, the fur trade.

  • Brandi says:

This is awesome news PETA!! I too am Canadian, and am pressuring the gov. to end this dusgusting and horrific practice. I am truly embarrased to be associated with this by being a Canadian.

  • Pamela says:

Glad to see the seal pelt/parts ban upheld. It is certainly a localized issue, with people in the north and Newfoundland wanting the hunt for revenue, or blaming seals for declining fish stocks (which is not true, humans caused that — not seals). New sources of revenue and development are needed in these areas so that these Canadians will not have to rely on seal slaughter to put food on the table.

We do actually live in a civilized world, year 2010! Wake up!

Good news – so we should all be boycotting / signing petitions etc! Who wouldn`t? Not just baby seals – and not just a few countries but ALL! Keep up the pressure…

  • Zaida Rodriguez says:

The seal slaughter is not only inhumane its barbaric. Its a big deception such practices would happen in such a magnificent country.

  • Aneliese says:

This is good news! I’m Canadian, and I’m keeping up the pressure on the government to end this slaughter. Thanks PETA!
