Emaciated Elephants Still on the Road

Written by PETA | May 26, 2011

Another circus, another ailing elephant. After PETA filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) about severely underweight elephants traveling with the Hanneford Family Circus, inspectors found that Liz, a 36-year-old Asian elephant, is so thin that her ribs, pelvis, and spine are protruding. Liz also has deformities of one front leg and one back leg that make walking difficult. Although it appears that Liz may not be performing at the moment, Hanneford still hauls this ailing elephant from venue to venue, and witnesses have seen her chained by two legs, unable to take a single step in any direction.

Hanneford Family Circus is often hired by the Shriners to perform as the “Shrine Circus.” (The Shriners don’t own their own circus—they hire animal exhibitors and other acts.) If your local Shrine still sponsors animal circuses, ask it to stop.

Liz’s plight is similar to that of 10-year-old Sara, an emaciated young elephant with Ringling Bros. circus. Sara’s face is hollowed, and her bones jut out. She has suffered from chronic lameness for at least two years, but according to the USDA, Ringling has not conducted adequate diagnostics or developed a treatment plan.

Please urge the USDA to order Liz and Sara off the road before it’s too late.

SAD!!! Why does the USDA allow this continue? Look at his RAP sheet this Hanneford Family Circus has, stared in 6/1990 I can see why these endangered species so mad, because of humans. The RAP sheet last updated 1/2008it has been 3 years since these animals have been checked on, and why must the elephants go thru this treatment for so long before officials say okay?

  • Stacey Sky says:

Makes me sick. Just want to go in there and save them all. Evil humans.

where is this animal at? Hannford Family Circus says from Myakka, FLoria. Why are permits granted to this circus to continue to torture this poor animal. Does PETA know where this animal is?

I,too am shocked that local hmane societies do not have some authority to end the suffering and misery of the so called entertainers. And for the the Shriners’ not to be aware is unbelievable and or unthinkable. I hope this does wake up the Shriners’ to the real facts of their money making Circus shows. Animals do not have to be the mainstay look at Circ de Sole’ Keep up the good expose on those who continualyy support and prosper from animal suffering and law breaking abuse.

Liz and Sara both need proper vetinary care and to be sent to an elephant sanctuary to recover. Both are young and have many more years to live and should be treated with respect due to any animal. Please ensure they are removed from the circuses they are now in and cared for properly. Thank you.

Animals are not here to entertain, & further more they are to be free, not for show & tell, & treated so horrible. This needs to stop, inhumane – WE ARE THEIR VOICES. Please leave them alone. Thank you

  • Len says:

What are the local RSPCA and other animal care watch dogs doing. They should all be monitoring what’s passing through their districts, surely…. This elephant and others should have been picked up a 100 times before now.

  • Len says:

What the hell are these people thinking. I hope the elephant was immediately removed from the circus and given a good life again. Please tell us that happened. The world seems riddled with animal cruelty. The Politicians are to blame. They have the power to stop it all overnight. They are gutless…….
