Elephant Interrupts McCartney’s Olympic Rehearsal

Written by Michelle Kretzer | July 26, 2012

Paul McCartney just made an Olympic-sized move for animals. In the midst of preparations for the London Olympics, which begin tomorrow, he put rehearsals on hold to send an urgent letter to Indian Forest Minister Dr. Patangrao Shripatrao Kadam asking him to help rescue an abused baby elephant

The young elephant, named Sunder, is confined to a dark shed at the Jyotiba Temple in Maharashtra, where he is kept in chains that have sharp spikes attached to them. The spikes stab Sunder’s feet, making it impossible for him to take a single step in any direction. PETA India learned that Sunder also has lesions all over his body from where his handler has beaten him with a bullhook (a sharp metal device that looks like a fireplace poker) and that his right eye is injured from being jabbed with the bullhook.

In his letter, Paul implored:

I most respectfully call on you to use your authority to get Sunder out, placed in your protective custody, and eventually integrated into a herd in the forest. … Please know the world is watching and wishing for a happy conclusion.

You can help! Urge the Maharashtra Forest Minister to use his authority to rescue Sunder and send him to a sanctuary.

Would you allow your children to be treated in this manner and can you become the voice for this little elepant with no voice to speak for him?

Dear Forest Minister Dr. Kadam: As a human being, as well as, an Olympian, I believe in respect for all life. I believe that you do too. Please, rescue this elephant and educate those who own or supervise elephants towards protecting them. Most people think of India as a spiritual nation, please fortify that quality into a lasting actuality. My prayers fully join the plea of Paul McCartney. Respectfully, Olga Connolly

  • Norma Campbell says:

Dear Sir: I am always impressed with the Indian people that I have met in my neighborhood, impressed by their concern and compassion for animals big and small. I run a Wildlife Rescue group and a lot of our baby birds and injured infant mammals are brought to us by Indian families they are always so concerned. The families recheck with us to obtain progress reports on their foundling. With this type of compassion I do not know why this baby Elephant named Sundar at the Jyotiba Temple must suffer so. . The young elephant, named Sunder, is confined to a dark shed at the Jyotiba Temple, the chain around his ankles contain sharp spikes so this baby is unable to move. He may lose an eye because of bullhook jabbing. He needs medical attention. Please free this baby Elephant and move him to a place of safety, comfort and companionship. Elephants are herd animals and must have companionship to survive and be healthy. Could you see yourself spending the next 50-60 years like this and that is how long he may live. Respectfully.
