Dogs and Cats in Trouble in Ukraine

Written by PETA | November 14, 2011

Did you know that in Ukraine, a dog or cat found wandering the streets can be shot on sight or poisoned and left to suffer? Their bodies are tossed into a cremation truck and burned, and some are reportedly burned while alive. It is estimated that in the city of Kiev alone, 20,000 dogs have already been killed in these cruel ways.

Ukrainian authorities are trying to “cleanse” the country of homeless animals before it hosts the European Football Championship in 2012. At a preliminary match between Germany and Ukraine in Kiev last weekend, members of PETA Germany and the Kiev Society for the Protection of Animals protested, calling on Ukrainian authorities to stop the cruel killings and asking the Union of European Football Associations to get involved.

Many German soccer (known as “football” in other parts of the world) players have now joined PETA Germany in publicly criticizing Ukrainian authorities for the torture of these dogs and demanding that the city use humane methods to manage the homeless animal crisis. The only solution to animal overpopulation is a spay-and-neuter initiative, but in the meantime, the city’s unwanted animals at least deserve a peaceful, painless end to their lives.

Please contact the Ukrainian Embassy and politely urge officials to stop these cruel killings immediately. Click here for the e-mail address for your state, or if your state is not listed, you can call 202-333-0606.

I am an American who has worked in Kiev and I know first hand how corrupt their government is. Anyone who complains about this cruelty could meet the same end! Can someone post more info about the Kiev Society for the Protection of Animals and how to support their efforts. I would be willing to travel there to help them and offer financial support.

  • Linh Hoang says:

You can judge a society by the way they treat their animals. Boykott Ukraine.

  • Bob says:

This is just disgusting. I had an entirely different idea about the Ukraine. This says a lot about a country’s mentality. It also shows that external interference by other countries only happens when money is involved. Shame on any of them as well!

  • Petra Simchen says:

    Please stop them!

  • Xénia Edvinsson says:

It is abhorrent that this happens! What does this say about Ukranian society?! The Government has to put a stop to this!!

  • Olena says:

Complainging to the Ukarinian Embassy is pointless. This issue will get bushed off just as it gets brushed off when citizens who live there compalin to city officals about this issue and get silenced. The city is carrying out this “program” – that meens the governing bodies are doing this, so how can we stop this unless we go protesting or something???!!!

Hey, I live in Canada but I am from Ukarine originally. My mother’s friends who live in the country have complained about the same issue, and have collected footage of the cruelty and posted it YouTube to gain awareness. The people who live in this city complain about this cruelty and comlain to the local governments like city officials but they brush it off as something unrelated. The govenment officials want to cover up the fact that they don’t have enough money to AT LEAST put the homeless animals to sleep humanely. So what they do is prepare some rat poison and put it in morsels of food and disperse it across the city. The wondering dogs and cats who are obviously hungry eat the pieces of food and poison themselves. They then die in a slow painfull death by experiencing siezures and other horrible symptoms. The link of the footage is bellow: Sorry but it is gut-wrenching to see 🙁

PETA, I suggest you create a genetic page where people from all over the world can sign and send it. If I send an email it will not have that much impact as if 100,000 people sign a letter.

  • angel says:

This is insane…people are so cruel & evil…it’s also contagious! STOP the killing of innocent animals and find something worthy to do with your time!

Seriously they can just be shot…thats absolutely ridiculous!!! This type or cruelty needs to stop NOW. They are living animals and dont deserve any type of wrongful treatment. Please see it in your hearts to put a stop to this inhuman doing!! If the population needs to be controlled do it in a painless peaceful way not just burning them alive and so forth.

I suggest Peta should protest infront of the president’s palace of Ukraine so that the president himself will know about this cruelty.Maybe other officials of Ukraine did not inform the president about this that’s why this is happening and I also suggest that maybe presidents/officials of powerful countries should be informed about this so they will really force Ukraine to stop this cruelty.I believe this will help esp.powerful countries who has the right to get involved in such wrongdoings like this which is happening to other countries.
