A Deadly Daisy Chain

Written by PETA | January 21, 2011

A sweet pit bull named Daisy froze to death in the frigid January temperatures in Holiday Island, Arkansas, when the chain she was attached to prevented her from reaching any shelter. The local humane society is requesting that cruelty charges be filed against Daisy’s owner, and in an effort to prevent more tragedies like this one, PETA has sent information on safeguarding animals during winter weather to local media outlets.

Sadly, Daisy isn’t the first dog to freeze to death this winter—and she likely won’t be the last. Fur coats—especially short ones like pit bulls’—don’t prevent dogs and other animals from suffering from frostbite and exposure. Animals can also become dehydrated when water sources freeze. Young, old, small, and short-haired dogs like pit bulls, beagles, Dobermans, and Rottweilers are especially at risk. Please—if you see any dog left outside without shelter, call the authorities right away. Your call could spare a dog a lingering, painful, lonely death like Daisy’s.

Don’t forget: January is “Unchain a Dog” Month. If you know of a chained dog in your neighborhood, you can help by providing him or her with straw bedding, fresh water, treats, and toys. If the dog is friendly and the owners are receptive, offer to take the dog for walks and “play dates.”

You can also support PETA’s work to provide dogs left outside in the cold with doghouses as well as PETA’s work in behalf of pit bulls. And please remember how important it is to spay and neuter your animal companions and help others in your community on this life-saving issue, too.

NEVER FEED TREATS TO A DOG THAT ISN’T YOURS WITHOUT THE OWNERS PERMISSION!!!!!!! Many animals have allergies to certain types of dog food and treats. Just remember, you may think you are doing good by providing yummy treats. That dog could have severe allergies and they could be potentially fatal.

Keeping that in mind… There is nothing wrong with chaining a dog provided the dog can easily reach food, water and shelter. Chains are not bad if they are used in controlled, supervised circumstances by people who care. What happened to Daisy is tragic. It is not the chaining outside that killed her. It was the fact that her owners did not care enough to bring her back into the warmth of their home when she began to get cold.

I hate this……this is so sad and just a terrible trajedy. No animal should have to die like this, no animal should have to live like this! What is the purpose of owning a dog if you are going to chain in up for the majority of its life??????? The people that own this dog, ought to be taken outside in the same conditions that this poor dog lived with and see how long these stupid fucks last???? It makes me sick to hear about the death of a beautiful animal all because of the ignorance and lack of care by some non-deserving human. I hope the owners rot in hell!

  • Karen Ramos says:

SHAME ON THEM!!! SO, SO SAD!!!

  • Beth Burrelsman says:

SCUMBAGS..WE NEED TO GET ALOT TOUGHER ON THIS KIND OF INHUMANE NEGLECT. IT’S GOTTEN OUT OF HAND. THESE PEOPLE WILL ROT IN HELL BUT ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN!

  • Sally says:

OMG how cruel >:( I know I’m jut a kid and my thoughts don’t count much, but that was really cruel.

  • Claudia says:

LETS TEACH THIS WORLD HOW TO LOVE AND CARE FOR OUR ANIMALS… ONE DOG AT A TIME…

  • Evelyn says:

All other comments made real sense! If you do not have love or compassion in your heart and dont think anything for a living creature of god! then dont pretend you care, ignorant insensable absent minded.

  • Wendy says:

And the useless owners and neighbours and families continue to sit on their fat backsides and use up the earth’s resources while causing nothing but pain and misery around them. No one saw anything ? Bullshit.

  • Vicky Brian says:

Dogs should not be tied or chained ..this is a form of animal cruelty…

I hope PETA pursues the case on Daisy’s cruel death in the hands of her owners and this punishable.

I am just now doubting Humane Societies of America…and any organization soliciting donations for animals’ welfare…Are the donations really being allocated to neglected abused animals??? Kill Shelters are destroying puppies and dogs without giving ample time and chances for possible adoption. It is more of a slaughterhouse. Check out Pet Pardons in Facebook.  Pulanski County Humane Society Eubanks Ky…That word Humane is not befitting. This shelter put down 11 puppies today and who knows how many more…I have read negative feedbacks on this shelter.

What can we do to help pass a law to prohibit Dog chain? This crule owner must not be allow to own any kind of pets EVER AGAIN!!

  • ocean17 says:

poor dog. Daisy should not have been outside anyway, and should have been treated as part of the family, not as some anti-social accessory. one that acts mean and bites. this is very sad indeed.

  • babybluebker says:

First of all, it is not the pitbulls that are mean, its the owners that make the dogs that way. Second of all, I think we should put a chain around the owner’s neck, and let him freeze to death in the cold. Eye for an eye.

  • Naomi says:

This is so heartbreaking. I cried when I read this and all I could think of is my own dog and how I would do anything to protect him. “A person is judged by how he treats the less fortunate.” What a profound statement. Shame on Daisy’s owners! I hope they are never allowed to have another pet again.

  • EdwinL says:

all my “kids” 2dogs and 1cats live INDSIDE OUR HOUSE, and they have a futon for a bed..they are MY KIDS and are treated as FAMILY MEMBERS..DAISY’s owners need to freeze their ass to death outside as well!!!!

  • EdwinL says:

Why would a moron leave a dog/cat outside in extreme weather regardless if its cold or hot…dogs have feelings!!

The dam owners should #1 be left outside for 24hrs in just their underwear/teeshirt/panties/bra so they can get a taste of their own medicine #2 they SHOULD NEVER be allowed to own ANY PETS EVER AGAIN!!!!!

  • Julie Roberts says:

I agree dont get a dog morons if your not gonna luv an look after it

  • Antonette says:

We have the same problem in Arizona in the blistering summer month’s 115+ degrees during the day.  A pet simply can’t survive without shelter, shade, and plenty of water.  How much intelligence does it take to grasp this, people have stopped using there brain.

They seem to think animals don’t feel pain, heat, or freezing temperatures. I think that any person that commits abuse or neglect of an animal should have there picture taken and posted along with their full name and address so all their neighbors know what kind of person they are.

  • GM says:

Damn how this kind of neglect angers me ! If the owner was such a prick wasn’t there a neighbour or anyone else who witnessed what this dear animal was suffering through !? Why do people have dogs if they just chain them up somewhere and forget about them ? Tougher stricter laws MUST be inforced to prevent this from happening,,,,,,an animal has feelings,,,they suffer,,,,they cry out in pain and misery,,,,buy a stuffed animal and tie it up if that is what you want in your backyard !!!!!!!

  • Debbie Furness says:

What are dogs doing outside in these conditions anyway. I live in Australia where the weather is very mild. My dogs live in the house where they should be they are part of the family. This is so sad. If you can’t love your dog as they should be loved don’t have them.

  • Susan says:

I wish I believed in Hell so I could wish the owners bon voyage!

  • Paula Johnston says:

Why does this have to happen???? What did that poor sweet dog do to anyone???? I am so disgusted with people who do this!!!!

  • Tasha says:

Terrible story. My lucky Rottweilers live indoors.

  • k says:

    Awww…. Poor baby :(

  • Angie says:

So cruel… Poor dog :( My dog is also named Daisy and I’ve imagined that it happens to her…

  • betty haase says:

this should not have happened.. it grieves my spirit to think of so much animal suffering..sweet daisy I am so sorry, your pain is over, but i still feel so so bad for you & all the other animals left out in the cold..

  • KAYLIANNE says:

  • Danielle says:

Damn I hate this. Do you know just how long he had to suffer before he died? Think about how cold you get and you can till withstand it although it’s hell. Why do people get dogs if they’re not going to take care of them!!!!!!!!!!

  • Aneliese says:

Charges better be filed against poor Daisy’s owner – PETA, please let us know if that happens!

  • LuvMyDogs11 says:

Can PETA arrange to chain the owner for this poor dog outside for the next snowstorm??

  • Estelle says:

WTF…THE OWNER SHOULD BE CHARGED..NO THINKING ABOUT IT!!!! OR BETTER YET CHAIN THEM OUTSIDE IN THE SAME SPOT!!!! IT SHOULDN’T ONLY BE JANUARY AS NO CHAIN MONTH BUT THE WHOLE DAMN YEAR!!!!! ANIMALS SOULDN’T BE LEFT OUT IN THE BLISTERING HEAT EITHER….I HATE PEOPLE!!!! SCUMBAGS….

  • kate says:

This is soo sad and I hope one day there are laws that you arent allowed to keep any dog chained up outside for long periods of time.. I hope the owners get the worst of all Karma.. i LOve my Pitbull

  • Annie Patenaude says:

  • Dave Faria III says:

    Please prevent these terrible tragedies!

  • Léana says:

poor dog that so sad =(

  • Rosie says:
