This one’s scarier than that shower scene from Carrie: It’s been shown before, but there’s more news that researchers in the U.K. have found a link between high meat consumption and early periods in girls.

Using data from a group of children who were studied from birth, researchers determined that 7-year-olds who regularly chow down on meat face a 75 percent chance of prematurely getting their periods by age 12. The curse of earlier puberty for youngsters also sets the stage for their increased risk of breast cancer later on, thanks to extended exposure to higher levels of estrogen.

OTR tweens, IBD, UTI—it’s easy to crack the code: Stop eating animals. Period.

My guess is that it’s the hormones given to the the animals to promote fast growth and weight gain that is adversely effecting the development of our children boys as well as girls.

Ummm….haven’t women been eating meat since the beginning of written history? If that is the case then wouldn’t it be safe to say that its probably not the meat that is causing young girls to prematurely have periods? My guess is that the preservatives and other chemicals that are added to the meat may be the culprit. I would love to see more purelean meat available. That is all I will buy for myself. But saying meat alone is the cause is very misleading in my opinion.

Both my grandmother and my mother got their first periods at age 17. My mother grew up during the Depression of the 1930’s and then WWII times of deprivation and rationing. Meat cheese butter and milk were rare on their table while vegetables were grown in their Victory garden. I have an old cookbook from that time that lists substitutions for unavailable ingredients I have actually baked a mock apple pie which calls for crackers in the filling instead of apples.

Actually age 12 is the right age for a period. They have said in past years that having it too late can cause you more health problems regardless of diet.

I don’t know what the problem is with the bleeding and the age but anyway eating meat is unethical regardless. Killing others for food is immoral regardless of weird sideeffects but maybe pointing them out has positive political effect! Maybe?

Well that sucks. I became veggie at age 13 so I guess that’s too late

  • MH says:

Age 12 is actually right about the average age for a girl to get her period.

  • Nadine says:

yup I’ve been vegetarian for 2 years now and i got my period late. Everyone else in my class got their’s way before I did.

I am a 20 year breast cancer survivor. My age when I was diagnosed with diabetes 50. Finally at the age of 53 I have wised up and am going vegetarian. When I master that I will work on vegan.
