Coca-Cola Stops Animal Tests

Written by PETA | May 31, 2007

Coke_Victory.jpgJust weeks after Pepsi announced that it would stop testing on animals, Coca-Cola has sent a letter to PETA announcing that it will no longer fund or conduct animal experiments. Coke had something of a history of invasive animal experimentation—including cutting open chimpanzees’ faces in order to conduct taste tests and force-feeding chemicals to rodents to test “caramel color”—so this compassionate decision by the company is a huge step forward, and it sends a powerful message to all companies that still test on animals about how a responsible, progressive company does business. Here’s what Coca-Cola’s senior vice president, Danny Strickland, said in his letter to us announcing the company’s decision:

“The Coca-Cola Company does not conduct animal tests and does not directly fund animal tests on its beverages. … We are sending letters to our partners and research organizations who may conduct safety evaluations on … ingredients insisting they use alternatives to animal testing ….”

Strickland also talked about a deadly physiology test on taste reception in rats that PETA had discovered Coca-Cola was funding through the year 2008, saying, “Recently senior management became aware that research involving rats was being conducted as part of a grant we had funded at Virginia Commonwealth University to study taste reception. We have contacted the University and have discontinued our funding.” This is a big victory for animals and an encouraging sign that animal experimentation is rapidly on its way to becoming another chapter in the history of severely messed-up stuff we wish we had never thought of in the first place.

I never buy Coke anyway. It’s disgusting stuff, makes you fat and it’s very unhealthy. So whether they test on animals or not (though glad to see they supposedly stopped), I still won’t be buying their junk.

I own two rabbits. One is a female Cadberry Jersey WooleyFlemish Giant mix and the other is a male Dwarf Bunny. To even imagine them being in such a hell hole gives me goose bumps and tears in my eyes. I for one and never going to PetSmart again! I am so glad that I discovered this because I was going to get some food over there after work but now I am just going to drive to Petco. I’ll be sure to bring this article up at my next 4H meeting the other members will be surley interested. God Bless PETA! Keep up your good work and I am a proud supporter of PETA! And am a proud supporter against Animal Cruelty of any sort!

Why doesn’t the government consider this animal cruelty?!? It really doesn’t make sense! Your video was amazing and this one really touched me. I want to make a video anouncement for my environmental class as our final project and I was wondering if you could possibly help me by getting some information. Most of the people in my school torture animals for fun and use products that are tested on animals. To really make a difference I thought I might make a video for my class that might disturb them enough to get them to actually think! They don’t realize that this is real that this is horror and this is NOT funny! I would appreciate your help because I know that you can help me achieve this ultimate goal. Thanks!

ok how slow am I?? I didn’t know Coke was doing animal testing much less Pepsi…or I would have let them know WHY I was not buying their products. Is there a list someplace? I know I did speak out at a discount store chain that I was working for when they did a monthlong fundraiser for March of Dimes. No one knew they tested on animals they would make a face and say “oh I didn’t know that…”
