Chickens to Be Pulverized … Alive

Written by PETA | November 5, 2010

There’s been an update to this case. Please check here for the good news.

Thanks to a courageous whistleblower, PETA has learned that Nebraska egg company TWJ Farms is allegedly planning to grind up approximately 70,000 chickens … while they are still alive. Brace yourself: This barbaric practice is reportedly standard operating procedure at the company’s factory farms. The witness told PETA that in recent years TWJ has ground to death hundreds of thousands of “spent” hens—those whose exhausted bodies have stopped producing eggs at a rate high enough for the company to justify continuing to pay to feed them. The witness also said that many of the birds were not killed outright but were ejected from the grinder with missing wings and limbs and left to suffer in agony for hours before finally dying, sometimes a day later.

We’ve sent an urgent letter to the company’s CEO demanding an end to these horrific killings. You can do the same by calling the company at 402-585-4867 or by writing to [email protected]. Please keep your correspondence polite—anything less may jeopardize the hens’ welfare!

We’ve also called on local law enforcement to intervene, pointing out that grinding animals to death falls outside even the cruel egg industry’s own standards and thus likely violates Nebraska’s Livestock Animal Welfare Act. We’ve also asked officials to investigate and—if warranted—to file criminal charges against all appropriate parties.

Of course, cruelty is par for the course on factory farms that jam chickens into stacked wire cages in which they can barely move. But when an industry that’s cruel enough to allow chicks’ sensitive beaks to be hacked off does not “approve” a killing method—in this case, dumping chickens into a grinder as if they were nothing more than tree branches to be tossed into a wood chipper—then you know the method must be particularly cruel!

Watch for updates to this case. In the meantime, you can help millions of chickens who live and die in misery by cutting eggs from your diet and going vegan.

This is a disgrace. I’ve been raising chickens for years for eggs and as pets. Those who have done this are inhuman and pure evil.

  • Marion Nolte says:

STOP this NOW!!!!! This is just cruel! How can people let this happen!

  • KindredSpirit says:

Why don’t they offer them to those who are starving? Or to the soup kitchens so that they can be at least put to some use, that way they can be killed humanely and used to help at the same time. Or … offer them to ppl who could use the eggs..

  • Jackie says:

OMG How can these people sleep at night ?Anyone who can hurt any living creature or stand by a watch have serious problems!!!This must stop NOW!!!

  • Milla Öst says:

    SICK, EVIL!!

  • Louise McGuire says:

This is disgusting and barbaric. Please don’t do it. And boycott the company. The only way farming methods will improve is if people show their disapproval by refusing to purchase goods from such organisations.

  • Annie Lindup says: I agree with @steve.. they cannot be human! I’m sorry, but those people can just sit back and let chickens get pulverised alive, they are not sane, not normal, and bloomin scary! I will be sending an email!

Re: Debra Pinkham. To add more iron to your diet, you don’t have to turn to meat. Spinach is rich in iron, as well as beans, black-eyed peas, lentils, chickpeas, oatmeal, dried fruits, nuts, sunflower seeds, nutritional yeast, molasses, and grains such as quinoa and millet. Also, vitamin C helps increase iron absorption. To read more about vegetarian nutrition, visit: – PETA

I can almost feel what these chickens are going through. I dodn`t eat at school today because of the chicken sandwiches they were serving for lunch. I even reafused to eat salad for fear that they were testing the pewsticides used on the greens on animals! It`s just sad when in cases like the oil spill, Johnson & Johnson was supplying Dawn detergent to clean the animals then turn around and abuse them! I`m seriously considering going veegan. I wish to be a vetrinarian when I grow up and can`t stand to see any animal killed, abused, or neglected in any way, shape, or form. This is inhumane, cruel, and an evil. I`m just glad there`s not a movie! I`m definatly going to have nightmares for the next few years.

Isn’t it sad how so many people are anti-PETA? The only reason anyone could be against PETA is because they know that eating and harming animals is wrong, yet they’d be hypocrites to support PETA if they still support the farms that are cruel! These poor, poor chickens! It sickens me to even imagine what they go through!

  • Joy Hall says:

Hell will most assuredly be filled to the brim with people such as these. May God have mercy on your souls for perpetrating such atrocities.

    Just horrible..

  • Tim Johnson says:

An utter disgrace. I’ve sent a polite, yet strongly worded email, and urge you to do the same. Together, we must all give a voice to the most abused animals on the planet; the beautiful, defenseless chicken.

  • davetta ares says:

i just don’t understand how people can be so darn cruel to animals. God put them on earth yes some are for food others are for pets. these people must not have any kind of heart to do this kind of stuff. i don’t hunt for the reason i think it is cruel to go hunt for an animal for certain stuff and leave the rest. i believe if you are going to hunt than you need to do like the ancient indians and use all of the animal for food or whatever. slaughterhouses are just a crazy invention for people to cause harm to animals instead of finding a more humane way to slaughter, there has to be a more humane way to do this without causing suffering and pro-long pain. i am so confused about people today in society that thinks its ok to torture animals.

Amber , You are in Denial and are a big part of the problem . Have you been to this farm you say you get eggs from ? Even if you have most people do not have access or time to go to these so called “humane” farms . Believe me the meat and dairy industry counts on your ignorance and gullibility . Plus what do you think happens to those girls the minute their egg production lags . Do you think your kind farmers are going to feed and care for them for the next 15 years of their natural lives .What do you think happens to all the baby roosters everyday on the day they are born ? Hint the same thing that is happening to the chickens above . Please stop enabling these people .Stop believing the fairy tale . Get your head outta the sand and go vegan .

  • Clay says:

To the people that do this: What is wrong with you people!!! Are you completely sociopathic. Do you not have any sense of compassion. Animals feel, they hurt just like we do. I am going to spread the message to everyone that I know, and they will spread the message to everyone that they know too. Its going to go viral.

  • Jan Garen says:

I have written to the Chief Executive. I hope that the authorities will act – what unimaginable suffering those chickens must have gone through, not to mention the dreadful conditions they have lived in beforehand.
