Canada Turns to China to Sell Seal Meat

Written by PETA | January 12, 2011

In an apparent effort to recoup profits lost as a result of the dwindling demand for seal products, Canada will begin selling seal meat to China. Why China? Well, the sealing industry can’t seem to find anybody else to buy the stuff.

Amid an international public outcry against the seal slaughter—in which baby seals are hooked in the eye or cheek, bludgeoned, drowned, and sometimes skinned alive—the European Union recently banned the import of all seal products from Canada, and the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution calling for an end to the massacre (sales of seal products are already banned in the U.S.). As a result, the price of a seal pelt has dropped from $100 just a few years ago to only $15 last year.

You can help keep the pressure on by e-mailing Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and telling him to stop the seal slaughter immediately. You can also post a pro-seal message on Facebook or Twitter.

“in which baby seals are hooked in the eye or cheek, bludgeoned, drowned, and sometimes skinned alive” How ignorant. Everyone who knows anything about the seal hunt knows that it’s illegal to hunt the whitecoats (“baby seals”). To suggest that hunting infant seals is legal is nothing less than libel.

  • nic says:

I can’t believe the Canadian Government still hunt these poor seals! What is wrong with them, have they no compassion to other living things??

  • brad says:

I fail to see how harvesting seals is any different than the cruel treatment we put all animals through in out slaughter houses. In some cases we use the entire animal in other cases we take only parts of the animal. I believe that if we are going to slaughter and animal, let’s insure that it is done in a respectable manner and that we use as much of the harvest as possible. I don’t use seal product but I do consume fish, cow, pig, chicken etc.

  • Penelope Ryan says:

I have no words I can express for the monstrous move this is on Canada’s part. They must have devils in their government. Who could make decision like this.

  • Christine Carrales says:

It further proves that money is put above life!!!!

  • Jessica says:

As an extremely proud Canadian, I was absolutely heartbroken when I read about this in the newspaper. People need to realize that this is only a small group of people doing this. Most people such as myself are against it, many don’t even know about it, which is why i have been collecting signatures from people who are against the seal hunt to give to Mr. Harper. Please don’t judge us all as horrible human beings, because we’re not.

  • Anastasia says:

We do not live in the ice age, nor in times where human beings had to kill other animals no matter how to profit from meat and survive. It’s a shame and irony to call some western cultures as civil and forward, when they gain profit this way.

  • lind says:

    Canada needs to wake up!

  • pydies05 says:

More pressure is needed on the Canadian Gov to stop this senseless slaughter once & for all.As Deborah commented b4,China doesn’t give a damn about the rights of animals. As long as there is trade. It’ll probably be passed off as something else in tin cans & sold to the rest of the world, not knowing what they’re eating.Canada has sunk THAT low & the Government should hang their head in shame.

  • LaNell says:

China is a country that skins animals alive daily to sell the fur. Unfortunately, they will have no moral problem buying seal meat from Canada, and Canada will be able to sell as much as they can slaughter. This is very heartbreaking to say the least.

  • Sandra Val says:

There is no need to take any animals life away.

  • Stef says:

There is no compassion for animals in any place where humans abuse, torture and mutilate animals for their benefit. Beautiful animals don’t murder, rape or lie, they only try to survive in this world monopolized by HUMANS!

  • Julija says:

Julija, by the time you read this entire message, more chickens and cattle will be slaughtered in the US this very moment than the entire Canadian seal cull this Spring; everyone knows what the life of a chicken is worth in the supermarket. And Americans, don’t even dare to use the “apples & oranges” speech here; life is life..

  • Mike Quinoa says:

    Hi Hans,

I’m Canadian, and it’s every bit my right, and my obligation, to complain to my government. When you have politicians, who have probably never ate the stuff in their life, posing for photo-ops eating seal flesh, or trying to introduce seal meat into the parliamentary cafeteria, then you know something is up. Canada has been spanked a couple of times on the seal issue (first the U.S.A banned seal products, and now the U.E.), and they don’t like it. So like a spoiled schoolyard brat, they’re trying to push their gory products on any takers they can find.

Anyway, I don’t know of any animal rights group that has specifically opposed the aboriginal subsistence hunt, and this represents only a fraction of the overall kill. I feel the Canadian government is very cynically using the Inuit as pawns in this controversy, and if I was a native I would tell the politicos to get lost.

  • Elise P says:

After extensive research on animal rights, I realize they have none at all. The reason has become quite clear to me why the LAW has no provision for animal rights. Because it would put at risk the MEAT industy, the torture of animals in laboratories, the evil circuses that abuse so many animals, the fur industy and so much more. If animals had rights it would change the way we eat, it would change our health, both physical and mental, and we would become healthy again, physically, but the most important is that our brain would expand and our values would change, and we would become human again, and we would not be able to continue saying (But! WE need to eat…what will WE eat if WE cant eat meat) No-body needs meat. Meat is NOT good for us! It’s the reason there is CANCER! The ENVIRONMENT is getting destroyed because WE consumes MEAT! Get informed, do the research, and CHANGE for that is what is expected. IF YOU WAIT, SOON IT WILL BE TOO LATE! THank you everyone for taking the time to read these posts, and for posting your opinion, and pls feel free to write if you have any ?

  • Julija says:

wow, just when we thought Canada and China can’t sink any lower….so if a seal’s life is worth $15 in Canada, how much is human life worth? $50 or $100? deduct all the taxes and it’ll be worth less than $15…outrageous

  • Constance Adams says:

Seal hunting is so barbaric by anymeans & should not be supported. I truly believe especially since they are killing the babies for fur that finding a place to take the meat should make it right? I don’t think so. It would be great if all nations could show respect for nature in any form. Hope this helps to save more lives.

  • Melinda L says:

I can not believe we are so barbaric. Canada is supposed to be a civilized country. Just look who we are dealing with. A country who adds lead to babies toys…chemicals to MILK products….they poisened our pets…our Government just looks the other way!!!! What is that all about. They kill any animal they want…in inhumane ways…FOR FASHION?!!?? what is wrong with us. Makes me ashamed to be Canadian!!!

  • Diana Dayton says:

It puzzles me that in this modern world where scientists are learning more and more about the intelligence and human emotions animals possess such as a wonderful sense of play, kindness, compassion, fear, sorrow, pain, joy..and yet people that have aquired a taste for meat will always argue the opposite in order to clear their conscience (if they have one). It is difficult to admit that, although claiming you are a humane person, the reality shows that deep down you are filled with cruelty and greed and driven by selfishness and a great void of compassion in your heart. Yes, China is one of THE worst offenders against animals. One only has to check into the shocking reality of the dog and cat slaughter and that of other precious animals for their fur. How they are deliberately tortured, skinned alive and the atrocities are limitless. What a shame that my country of Canada would choose to follow suit with such a despicable nation. I feel sorry for the kind people in China that love animals and are trying to protect them. They must suffer so much as well. So those of you supporting this atrocity are also supporting the suffering of people that feel these animals pain and suffering to the core. You are like parasites and our Prime Minister is a BIG one. Driven by greed and an empty soul. Disgusting!

A GREAT COUNTRY IS MADE OUT OF RESPECT FOR ALL LIVING CREATURES, I HOPE CANADA LEARNS THIS! STOP CRUELTY WITH SEALS!

  • Shirley Holman says:

Just when I thought the Conservative government of Canada couldn’t sink any lower on the subject of the seal hunt – they did. Trust me, Mr. Harper, Canada will get no international gain as a result of being seen linked to China on this incendiary subject. To save yourself from possibly going down as the PM on whose watch Canada sank to its lowest level on the matter of animal rights, please withdraw this appalling idea.

  • Barbara Pecze says:

So disgusted with my birth country! This cruelty must be stopped. So ashamed of the Canadian government which is just as cruel as china; they both skin animals alive, shame, shame!

  • Evelyn says:

Who the hell do these people think they are! they are to begin with the MOST HEATLESS IDIOTS! WITH MANY OTHER UNFORTUNATE GREATURES OF GOD, A BUNCH OF SAVAGES! THATS WHAT THE BAD ONES REALLY ARE! THEY NEED TO LEARN TO BE HUMANS AGAIN AND ASK GOD TO FORGIVE THEM!…. THEY CAN ALL GO TO HELL IN MY BOOK!

  • Karen says:

It is horrible enough that Canada has blood on their hands because of the seal hunt. The fact that they will sell to anyone to make a dollar is beyond sickening

  • kim says:

do they have a limit on how many seals can be taken;like if peta or supporters went out and painted numbers on seals until the limit was reached effectively ending the hunt.which would probably work world wide in similar situations, etc.[ending hunts for other types of animals as well].

  • Jilli says:

I was outraged to read about this in the newspaper. Especially how the article I saw was written. It’s absurd that this country has decided to give the finger to the EU, turned around, and resort to trading with China instead of realizing that just maybe there’s a reason people don’t want to buy our dead baby seals. It seems like for the longest time we’ve been told to model ourselves after Europe and be as progressive as possible, meanwhile when one of our archaic traditions is challenged, then we suddenly have to stand up for whatever is “Canadian”, no matter how outdated, cruel and inefficient said tradition may be.

  • Sharon Wakefield says:

The Canadian government needs to offer free training /education to those men who’s livelihoods depend on slaughtering seals.  This “only” means of support has probably been passed down for generations!

I know if they could make a paycheck another way, the seal industry would dry up.  God knows we’re all trying to do just that!

  • Hans Von Austerlitz says:

Hallo! I’m from Berlin. And have been studying Canada. I understand that many slaughter the seals in a brutal way. Not all though. Native Canadians have been hunting seals since the human race was created. They originally killed them for their pelts would keep them warm. Without the warmth of the fur they would die of frostbite and coldness. They used every part of the seal and waisted none. They would eat, and construct materials out of this seal. They needed them to survive. Soon later they also used them to make a living. Selling the pelts for other’s use supplied the hunters with the cash needed to survive. And plus, the recipient of the seal would put it into good use, and never waste it. Now, people still make their living from the seal hunt. This is what they do as a living, as they have for hundreds of years. This is a part of Canadian Heritage. No, I do not support the brutal killing of young seals. I realize is wrong. But it is none of PETA (or anyone for that mater) ‘s right to tell the Canadian government to change. If Canadian parliament believes it will continue , leave them be. Soon enough, maybe they will realize the problem they are causing among society, and they will cease the Seal Hunt. Though, let them decide for themselves. In my own opinion, PETA shouldn’t be to outrageous, and should not be overly rude, disgraceful, or aggressive towards this topic. I lived 5 years in Northern Canada, with the Inuit population, Canada has been doing long, long before PETA. They hunted seals before fur trade existed in North America. So, it’s nothing new. Yes, maybe Canada will need to update their ancient traditions, but don’t force them to by throwing pies, causing violence and making a war. If Canada wants to end seal hunt, they will. If not they won’t.

  • Linda Stewart says:

Have you no shame??! Stop trying to find sleazy, underhanded ways to promote your blood trade! Frankly I wish the USA would embargo ANYTHING that comes from either Canada OR China!

  • christine says:

This is absolutely barbaric. Defenseless flippered animals, the people that hunt them, must have cruel hearts. This must be stopped!

  • Laurence Burris says:

Isn’t it time to stop the cruel seal hunts?! Its not like we have tons of them in the ocean that bother us.

  • Nicola says:

This is outragous! You are sick in the head.

  • christopher says:

15 bucks for the life of a seal ??????????? not that any amout of money is worth a life that has not harmed you but to die for 15 bucks for your fur is just wrong .

  • Jordan Leigh says:

I am ashamed as a Canadian that you would divert to a hostile country and continue to be inhumane with these precious seals. You continue abominal actions for greed.

  • Samantha Bonilla says:

Shame on Canada. I can’t believe I am gonna say this but ” I am embarassed to be Canadian” I will be going to Newfoundland to the front lines of the seal hunt in April. If you really care about this cause- PLEASE JOIN ME!

DISGRACEFUL AND SO EVIL AS WELL

  • Brenda - PEI Canada says:

So when did China suddenly develop a taste for seal meat. They are the 3rd largest importer of Canadian seafood and there has never been a market for seal meat. Something is fishy here. Gail Shea cannot put a dollar value on this deal which is strange. I read she wore a little fur ribbon to support the seal hunt. Please e-mail Harper and keep the pressure up. Go PETA !

  • Irene Leggett says:

Unfortunately, a very bad move for the seals as the Chinese will eat all sorts of disgusting food with no thought to how the animal is raised, kept and then slaughtered. Shame on both nations.

  • Raquel says:

Please Canada, stop the seal slaughter, don;t take the same approach to animals that China has. Enough is enough!

  • Deborah Burckhardt says:

Probably the most unethical country in the world in matter of animal and human rights is China. The fact that Canada has to seek China to sell their bloody seal products shows how inhumane, unethical and disgusting the slaughter of seals is. Of course China will buy the products, we have thousands of examples of how China doesn’t give a damn about animals and the environment but I thought Canada still had a little more dignity than to sink as low as China. Apparently both countries are in the same level, not caring for the suffering of animals and loving their bloody industries where animals are nothing more that things to be exploited. Disgusting!

  • lizw9 says:

I am so ashamed to be Canadian! Honestly. I don’t understand why the hunt is still going on. It can’t even be argued that they’re making any money out of it. Shameful.

  • Ms. V says:

PM Harper should wrap his lips around this word: ECOTOURISM. Transform local economies and provide autonomy for our Northern peoples. Instead he perpetuates a miserable urban myth with this…I am Canadian.

  • Mich says:

Wow, my Canadian government is so pathetic.

  • Gala says:

This is great! Finally people everywhere are learning that anything that comes from a seal is disgusting and shouldn’t be allowed in any fashion (pun intended). Now if we could only get China and any other country that doesn’t outlaw this barbaric trade to follow suit.

  • Brenda in Prince Edward Island. Canada says:

We are not fooled by this ! Your support is wonderful. This deal is bogus and all smoke and no fire. Just another reason to let our government know the seal hunt must end. Please contact our government and let them know we are not fooled by this stunt by Gail Shea and Stephen Harper.

  • Yvonne says:

This is outragous! Stop this cruel hunt or find a humane way to hunt.
