Canada’s Pathetic Ploy to Keep Killing Seals

Written by PETA | May 11, 2011

As Canada’s annual seal slaughter garners worldwide disgust, the government is frantically grasping at straws in its effort to prop up this cruel, dying industry. Despite the fact that Canada spent millions of taxpayer dollars this year to promote the massacre, very few sealers took part. Of the 400,000 seals allowed to be killed, 37,609 animals have been killed this year.

In response, the government announced that the slaughter would be extended indefinitely. But extending the timeframe for sealing won’t change the fact that seal pelts are banned by the U.S. and the European Union and that many other countries won’t import them. Pelt prices continue to plummet, and Canada continues to lose money every year.

If you are a Canadian resident, you can e-mail Prime Minister Stephen Harper and ask him to use your tax money to invest in alternatives for sealers instead of supporting an expensive, unnecessary industry that is a scar on the face of Canada.

I quit skiing in Canada many, many years ago. The money lost to them in food, reservations, equipment, etc. adds up. My ski buddies also quit as we all felt disgust towards the Canadian government.

It’s funny, because I feel none of this taking any lasting effect on Canadian economy. Perhaps you’re doing it wrong? But nice try anyway.

There is already a commercial boycott of Canadian seafood in place. Since most sealers are actually full-time fishermen, this is designed to hit them where it hurts. “To date, more than 5,000 restaurants and grocery stores have joined the Protect Seals campaign. Some of the national corporations that are participating in the ProtectSeals boycott of Canadian seafood include Whole Foods Markets, Ted’s Montana Grill, Trader Joe’s, BI-LO, WinCo Foods, Harris Teeter, The Fresh Market, Oceanaire Seafood Room, Bon Appetit Management Company and Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Cafes.”

That picture is worth a thousand words. God help humanity.

HAHA! JC! Oh wow. Jeez, I just laughed really hard and for that I thank you. It’s been awhile since I’ve laughed that hard. But to my point. It astonishes me how little you know about Canada, nor politics. Your boycotting Canada will have about as little of an effect as me boycotting lets say…Doritos. Seeing as PepsiCo is an American industry.

  • Seth says:

Please end the seal hunt off of Calgary, Alberta! You are very well informed & extremely intelligent enough to do something about it, Peta!!

  • jeff says:

Haha, JC… you’re an idiot. Have you stopped buying products from essentially every country in the world? Animal abuse and animal slaughter goes on everywhere, cupcake. If you’re from the US, your comment is even more hysterical.

  • MA Moo says:

It is hard to believe that this barbaric practice is still going on in the 21st century! With all the technology and synthetic fabrics we have, you would think man would evolve from his prehistoric caveman ways! Get em PETA!

  • Mike Quinoa says:

I’m ashamed of the Canadian government. What a bunch of spoiled, pouting brats. Let’s hope they soon comprehend the global repulsion of the seal hunt and end it while they still have some dignity left.

  • Susan R says:

People that abuse innocent animals are usually abusers themselves,,maybe someone should look into these peoples backgrounds..sick country and its ignorance of animal abuse…if this is called hunting then these people are cowards.

  • Claudia Marrapodi says:

This Government seems to have great difficulties in getting the real point: The time for such stoneage atrocities is definitely over and the responsible should put a mask on their face because their public shame is infinitely endless…

  • JC says:

Can’t believe this is still going on. What will it take? I’ve already stopped buying anything from Canada. Hope they understand people are boycotting their products, hit them where it hurts.

  • SCzesak2 says:

Just end it already!! I’m grateful that not as many were killed this year, but that’s still too many innocent seals being killed! How can they allow this to continue. Spare that money and make faux!!

  • paul says:

    WTF? kahnada

  • Mark says:

We must all keep up the fight until the seal hunt is finally ended !!!!
