Bunnies Drowned at Ohio Petland

Written by PETA | August 4, 2009

Update: The Petland store has closed, and the employee has been charged with cruelty to animals. Click here for details.

Warning: disturbing image.
Drowned rabbits

This photo was taken in the back room of a Petland store in Akron, Ohio, and posted on Facebook by Elizabeth Carlisle, who can be seen grinning as she holds two dead, soaking-wet rabbits by the scruff of the neck—rabbits she just drowned while on Petland’s time clock. On Carlisle’s Facebook page, she confirmed a friend’s guess that she had drowned these two rabbits and wrote, “[T]he manager took the pic for me. [S]he reminded me that there were people outside as [I] was swearing at them to just hurry up and die but then she was so kind as to take this picture.”

These horrific deaths followed what was apparently an equally horrifying life for these rabbits. Other comments Carlisle posted made it clear that the rabbits were drowned after sustaining agonizing injuries when they were allowed to “attack and eat each other.” The rabbits suffered from “deep wounds all over,” “an eye missing,” what Petland staff “suspected was a broken jaw,” and paralysis from the waist down—injuries that would not have occurred had these animals been provided with proper care and supervision.

Undercover investigations have revealed time and time again that companies that breed and sell animals are concerned about profits, not animals’ well-being. We are urging Petland to think long and hard about what this incident makes clear: The company has no business selling any animals.

To prevent future incidents like this one, please, never buy from pet stores and urge Petland at the very least to stop selling rabbits.

Those who abuse animals are often abusive to others in same or other forms. ABUSERS ARE BULLIES. IT IS a RED FLAG to be aware of. There is so much violence everywhere and on TV. It’s really depressing and sickening on an everyday level. Learning to recognize and prevent abuse NEEDS to be taught. The earlier the better (INCLUDING elementary school). Violence is LEARNED BEHAVIOR. and it needs to STOP

  • amy says:

I hope that biatch goes to jail and gets her arse beat

  • catmommy says:

I walked into a Petland once and seeing the horrific condition of the animals walked out and will never shop there ever!

  • Deb Q says:

Sorry friends, I shared on FB, because NO animal should be purposefully made to suffer or die !!!! And that B’tch looks so pleased with herself! That mde her, and her boss, at least TWO sick f’c’s in the same store! What are the chances?? I say, stay away from any Pet supply store that sells animals! ???What happens to ANY animal that doesn’t sell? Too expensive for the store to have them euthanized by a vet……. So… Any guesses?

  • Dawson W. says:

I think that animal cruelty should have the same punishment as murder, because that’s what it is.

  • Denise Parsons says:

I cant believe anyone would be so cruel . I am disgusted and fed up with helpless animals being cruely killed She and the person who took this picture should do mandatory jail time . And never be allowed to work with animals again .

  • william newton says:

This woman looks as if she enjoyed killing these animals and her boss took photos! . These are the people who are paid to care for these animals ,what evil sick people ,they both should be sacked and prosecuted .

  • Christopher says:

This is HORRIBLE and DREADFUL!! I hope that she had charges pressed against her for animal cruelty. She should never be allowed to work around animals and if possible never be a pet parent or caregiver EVER AGAIN. She is truly a disturbed individual and in need of some sort of medical evaluation. A sad excuse for a person.

  • angel says:

somethign tells me she has probably killed before and im not talking animals im talking she probably has killed a person before or she is a potential threat to the community if the animals were injured y not just humanily euthaniza them i hope someone is loading a shot gun right now for this woman so she never hurts anyone again

  • Samantha says:

OH this is just heartbreaking and wrong.

  • Karma says:

why does she have to be so evil? there are so many animals in the world neglected, killed and abused for fun and its sick. why would her boss take a picture of 2 innocent bunnies her buddie just brutally killed???? why are people so violent and discusing. this made me cry

  • Karma says:

This picture brought me to tears. what do animals do to deserve this?

  • Blix07 says:

Carlisle; really? Let’s all hope you never have children.

  • Ispeaktoanimals says:

I am ashamed and saddened by the girls smiling face in the picture. I want to punch the person who snapped the photo! But i’m glad that they did because somebody was alerted to the situation at that store and stopped it, also, drowning the rabbits may seem cruel (and it is) in this case it ended their pain (lost eye, bite wounds, paralyzed from the waist down). I have never bought a pet from anywhere that they are “sold” and never will. Thanks PETA!

  • Kay says:

This girl is totally sick. Smiling after drowning rabbits???? What is wrong with her? And she made them suffer and struggle while holding them under water. Her comment Hurry Up and Die??? She needs to be prosecuted and never allowed to work in a pet store or have a pet ever in her life.

  • hockett03 says:

I bet Ms. Carlisle’s parents are really proud of their little girl now! I will never shop at a Petland again! This article has really upset me and makes me sad to know I am part of a cruel, sadistic race.

  • Rhiannon Marston says:

Why isn’t this person being prosecuted???????????????////

  • Dayan says:

Good thing the store has closed , now what needs to be done is have that abuser behind bars so her smile can wipe off her face .that way she will think twice before hurting another innocent animal .

  • Adair Leonard says:

This sick woman, Elizabeth Carlisle, lacks a conscious and should never be allowed to be near any kind of animal again. She doesn’t care how much they suffer.

  • Ashlen says:

Because creatures don’t suffer, right? Why does this girl seem so pleased with herself for being a murdering coward? And WHY is she working at a pet store? This is sickening and so is her pathetic punishment. Anyone that can harm something so defenseless whether it be animal or human, is a true coward. I have to believe anyone that can do something like this will answer for it, whether in this life or the next. She is a very disturbed girl, maybe she needs help and/or medication. Lets hope…

  • Zev says:

What is her point? Oh look at me I’m the totally cool bunny killer, how stupid

  • dogs! says:

I HATE PETLAND. I am completely in shock at the way people think they have the right to treat such amazing creatures. What could have possibley gone on in her head to do this, and then to POST IT!! she must be completely insane. It is people who destroy this world, not animals, nature, guns, or anything of the sort. PEOPLE SUCK!

  • Mary D says:

Just another sorry excuse for a subhuman…do the animal world a final favor.. Drop dead and take the other animal abusers with u…don’t think for a second u won’t pay for ur actions..

  • ThouShallNotKill says:

Sociopaths in charge of animals ~ it’s a holocaust for animals. She’s a Nazi… the real deal. TEACH ANIMAL COMPASSION IN PRESCHOOLS, GRADE SCHOOLS, JUNIOR HIGH, HIGH SCHOOL and COLLEGES! PeTA, form compassion classes!!!! It’s brilliant!

  • Melanie says:

  • a says:

    no different from killing humans.

  • Danna Dearborn says:

Enough has already been written; I agree with the horrific act/s and “yes” all the laws applicable should be upheld to take this place and people down. Yet another sad comment on humanity!

  • Sara Wersinger says:

Elizabeth Carlisle was slapped on the wrist for such horrific action and deserves a more harsh punishment. Her actions reflect no respect for animal life or no moral beliefs.

  • MacKie says:

Here’s the update. Elizabeth Carlisle was sentenced to a 250 dollar fine, 120 hours of community service and probation in September 2009.

  • Jeanine Sammis says:

This young woman is a disgrace to humankind. I’d love to show her the same respect she showed those poor defenseless bunnies. And the fact that she is grinning ear to ear and proud of what she’s done is horrific. If you work with animals it’s because you love them. Animals bring joy to our lives and it’s our job to protect and nurture them as we would our own children.

  • Cristina says:

This, is one of the most cruel things I have ever saw…..

  • Margie says:

I pray that enough of us the one,s that care can make a difference against these type,s of people, that have to be sick in the head to do these kinds of acts to animals.Let us make a stand and change what we can.I hope they are all arrested for any unkind acts against animals….

  • Jane Doe says:

She is a sorry excuse for a human being. May she rot in hell! I hope she has a life of pain an misery!

  • Vicki Ginoli says:

  • Omega says:

Sorry, people, the only karma in life is the justice you make yourself. Stop hoping your fairy godmother goes after these people and try to make a difference yourself.

  • ,Marina says:

Just look at that horrible and cruel face of that rubbish girl. she must be arrested and it would be too good for her. She is absolutely happy. Petland should be closed. We see how animals are treated there.

  • paula says:

This is horrible! I have a pet bunny and she is the sweetest thing ever! Why would you do that to an innocent being, I thought people who worked in pet shops were supposed to like animals!!

  • Carolyn says:

So sad, I am glad this store closed but thank you peta for monitoring these situations so that customers can make better informed choices.

  • Female tattoo says:

Karma better act fast. This girl needs a swift kick in the pants ASAP.

  • jram says:

This girl should be arrested, no person should do this things to animals. Sick…..

  • Patty says:

Petland had a store in Norwalk, Connecticut. It was always dirty and I felt sorry for the animals in the store. They have closed their doors down years ago. No one with any sense would buy any pets from them.

  • robin says:

Does anyone know if this sicko and her manager were arrested for cruelty to animals? At the very least fired? Please give me some good news that can take some of the pain away after watching that sicko. I will NEVER buy products at any store that sells live animals!!! NEVER!!!

  • karen says:

violence against animals and violence against women is related / this kind of stuff should be forbidden under the end to violence against women act / also, comments suggesting the woman in the picture be abused physically are just adding to violence against women – the idea is to have animal abusers receive stiff penalties and jail time and to educate, not to encourage us to physically abuse animal abusers if they happen to be women.

  • Eileen says:

  • linda says:

This is actually very scary and not to be taken lightly. This young woman here in these photos needs psychiatric help. I have a small dog and the thought of him ever being in the hands of someone like this freaks me out. She has now created a huge karmic lesson for herself she may not like….wowWTF??

  • wipepetlandoffmap says:

Petland is evil. They have good people who work there, but the whole idea of pimping puppies like they did for so much money is just wrong. I worked for a veterinarian years ago who had the petland account in our city. At least once a week a parvo puppy was brought in from that place. Don’t buy puppies at pet stores they are physically abused. By buying them, you encourage more to be abused.
