Broadway Star Speaks Out Against Carriage Horse Abuse

Written by PETA | May 8, 2008

We’re going full steam ahead with our efforts to permanently ban horse-drawn carriage rides in New York, and the latest high profile New Yorker to sign on to the campaign is Lea Michele, the beautiful star of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Spring Awakening. Here’s what she said about her decision to do this ad on behalf of New York’s carriage horses:

“These horses are forced to work long hours in extreme weather conditions, all while walking on hard pavement and inhaling exhaust fumes. As a New Yorker, I know how tough it can be to navigate the city streets, and that’s on two feet! When I see the horses attached to carriages and made to pull heavy loads in traffic, it makes me sad and angry. I want tourists to know that long after their rides are up, these horses’ miserable lives continue, day in and day out.”

Thank you, Lea! I’ve posted the new ad below, and you can learn more about the campaign here.

Thank you for supporting the abused horses. It’s not only in NYC but in other cities around the United States. On a recent trip to Memphis Tenn. I encountered the same carriage horse abuse at a prominent downtown hotel. After numerous calls I was unsuccessful in getting anyone to act upon my urgent plea to rescue these starved emaciated horses. Is there anyone out there who really cares! This abuse cannot continue. We all need to get involved! I doubt that these horses are adequately fed after their daily workouts. The carriage horse owners should be arrested for the abuse they inflict on these sweet helpless animals. We must start taking photographs of these starved horses the names of the companies who own them and send this to your local papers. Also report these findings to your local police. I’m sure you will find their living conditions as appalling as those at puppy mills!

  • Barbara says:

I agreehorses pulling carriages in NYC should be stopped. Not only do they endure grueling summer days carriage owners had to be forced to adhere to humane rules about adequate water rest stops etc but on their one day off they spend itnot in a green restful field somewhare but in a cramped dark stuffy tiny stall in some turn of the century horse stable several stories up in Queens or Brooklyn or the Bronx……This has to stop!

there beautiful animals and deserve to live out there lives on farms grazzing in the sun. do to people as they have a choice but animals don’t have a say. we are there voices. I would like these creeps to be dealt with as animal cruelty and fined 5000. let them walk on the hot ground and see it’s not fun

LEA YOU ARE A BEAUTIFUL PERSON INSIDE AND OUT. IN THIS DAY WHEN EVERYTHING IS SUCH A FAST PACE AND WITH MACHINES TO DO EVERYTHING. WHY PUT THESE HORSES IN DANGER. ANIMALS AND VERY HIGH TRAFFIC DON’T MIX ITS AWAYS THE ANIMAL THAT PAYS THE PRICE FOR THE INHUMANE TREATMENT THAT GREEDY HUMANS PUT ON THEM AND WHAT FIND IF ANY DO THEY GET A FEW DOLLARS THAT THEY WILL MAKE UP ON THE NEXT POOR HORSE. THIS INJUSTICE MUST BE STOPPED. AND ITS TIME THAT HUMANS PAY THE PRICE.

This is great thank you Lea and PETA! There is also a city councilman in Queens NYC who is very proactively rallying to stop the “horse carriage trade” and come up with ways to replace this extremly unkind and unnecessary practice with alternatives such as antique touring cars which I think would be a great idea for all concerned!

  • Why should I tell YOU???? ***Derby supporter*** says:

People who drive the carriges are oretty cruel I have seen it before with a bearing rein in there mouth they hate it you can tell by there impatience.

  • Maya, C.V.T. says:
