Bicycle-Riding Bears and More Chinese Crackers

Written by PETA | August 10, 2010

Animals Asia Foundation recently released photos of bicycle-riding bears and boxing bears in Chinese circuses, and the pictures are poignant reminders of the misery that animals endure in circuses throughout China. Not that the atrocities done to animals who are touring (if you can call living in a smelly boxcar and then in a dungeonlike stadium basement “touring”) with circuses in the U.S. have been stopped. After all, in the U.S., elephants are routinely beaten with rods, sticks, and bullhooks, whipped into submission, and chained so that they are barely able to move.

Animal in Chinese Circuses

Of course, no one had to get out the bullhook to convince PETA Asia staffers to work hard on China’s first-ever animal protection laws. Earlier this year, they met with Chinese government officials and discussed ways to help animals—including improving conditions for animals in circuses. These photos are further proof of how urgently animals need us. Get the “Hot and Sour Scoop” on PETA Asia’s work by visiting the group’s blog. And help animals here at home by boycotting the circus.

This is so upsetting. I’m so disappointed and hurt to to see these beautiful animals being abused. This people need to pay for all the harm they cause against our precious animals. They deserve a worse treatment!

  • Kara Koontz says:

Anyone who suddenly beats someone’s dog as they are taking it for a walk should grab the object used and beat the youknowwhat out of the perpetrator!

  • Cathey says:

Keith you need to focus on exactly what is happening to animals. It is not that one country is worse than another. It is simply that amimals are suffering. China and most of Asia has no compassion from all I have seen. This site is about animals not racism. Put your ego away and fight for the animals. The whole world has animal abuse including America. Face the truth.

  • plantgurly says:

I’d like to know what sort of a repulsive person pays to see this? I suppose these morons “training” the animals are getting paid by someone or they wouldn’t do it. The patrons and the disgusting filth running this all deserve to be cut up with rusty razors. Wasn’t too long ago that baby girls were getting their heads bashed in because they weren’t born male so I don’t know that there is any hope for a group with that sort of mentality. Why don’t they just keep knocking the hell out of each other and leave animals and nature in general out of it. I’d pay to see that

  • Tucker says:

I for one have stopped purchasing my dogs toys that are made in China as I fear some animal has given it’s life for it. The fur trade in China is nothing new. It’s been going on for years and the only way it will stop is if it is outlawed in America. So you want to make a difference? Write your local representatives and urge a bill be introduced. Even Martha Stewart just introduced dog suppliestoys and guess where they are made? Right China! Cheap labor cruel treatment to animals. I have never and will never buy anything that Martha Stewart has anything to do with.

  • Anon says:

Let me start by saying I say “Asian countries” because the abuse of animals is so overwhelming and broad from Vietnam Korea Japan CHINA holy hell that I can’t even keep it straight!!! Each culture is so disrespectful to animals I’d literally have to keep a running tally of what each one does. That is much too depressing sorry. If you would like to compile one however feel free to send it to me and I’ll get my facts 100 straight. Don’t try to tell me they don’t eat catsdogs in insert Asian country names here to be politically correct that its some “myth” or “stereotype” because its NOT. I’ve seen the documentaries where they have the people that RAISE THE DOGS TO BE EATEN RIGHT OUTSIDE THE “RESTAURANTS”. um… WTF?!?! The insert Asian country names here to be politically correct went around beating dogs to death PETS BEING WALKED ON LEASHES on the street in broad freaking daylight just because. Please justify that? And that is JUST the dogs. Don’t even get me started on all the other godforsaken disgusting things taking place. I promise you I’m not racist I said “I don’t mean to offend those who don’t condone or personally participate in this”. I’m not personally attacking anyone that finds this type of behavior acceptable.

ALL ANIMALS TRULY FEAR HUMANS AND THAT IS WHY THEY REACT AND FEAR BITE AND SHUDDER WITH IRREVERSIBLE PSYCHOLOGICAL BRAIN DAMAGE. CIRCUS LIFE FOR EVEN HUMANS IS STRESSFUL BECAUSE OF THE PACE THE TRICKS AND ROUTINES AND ESPECIALLY THE TRAINING WHICH AT THE LEAST IS QUITE ABUSIVE. PLEASE WE IMPLORE YOU TO WRITE AND SPEAK OUT TO STOP ANIMALS BEING USED IN CIRCUSSES AND TO CRIMINALIZE CHINA’S TREATMENT OF BEARS TO DOGS AND CATS. DO NOT ACCEPT THIS TREATMENT JUST BECAUSE IT IS IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY WE ARE A GLOBAL COMMUNITY AND CONSEQUENTLY ACCOUNTABLE FOR HUMAN AND ANIMAL ATROCITIES SUCH AS THESE BEING PRACTICED IN CHINA. PLEASE CHINA PLEASE END THE ORGAN HARVESTING AND THE DOG AND CAT AND OTHER ANIMAL FUR FARMS. STOP THE DEMAND FOR IT. END THE PAIN AND SUFFERING OF SENSITIVE PAIN SENSITIVE FEELING and LOVING animals. It’s horrific and cruel and ACTION MUST be taken to encourage these practices to end FOREVER. STOP the trade in animals animal organs and parts and fur. Follow the advice of PETA and hundreds of ANIMAL WELFARE and PROTECTION ORGANIZATIONS together with Famous celebrities and animal welfare advocates. Please listen. LISTEN NOW. My Sincere hope is that CHINA listens Yours in Guardians of Humanity Alan Braganza

I saw this piece of news in an indian TV channel. I could not sleep after knowing that the tigerlion’s tooth and claws are ripped off to make them harmless. The bear shown were beaten badly by the ringmasters and seemed terrified. It was heartbreaking to see they go through this ordeal. I sincerely request PETA and Animal Asia foundation to put pressure on the Chinese authorities to stop this inhumane treatment of the animals.

  • Raquel says:

Honestly Anon you bring up a good point. I am really trying not to have that attitude but sometimes I have a hard time separating the actions from the race when it seems to be so overwhelming at times. Some of the Asian cultures seem to put such a high value and prestige on rare genetically engineered breeds. They will pay in the thousands for them but there seemed to be no problem with bludgeoning to death shooting stray dogs in plain sight in order to clean the streets before the Beijing Olympic games. Although every country state has cases of animal abuse there does seem to be a concentration in certain countries. Why is that?

  • Jeongben says:

Honestly people who say asains are the worst then say “not trying to be rascist” let me tell you you are rasict. I don’t know about china or japan or any other asian country but in MY birth country we dont eaat dogs or cats that was an acient tradition! People who live in the cities have them as pets and companions how can you judge with only the word of PETA? i mean yes this is wrong but america has circuses too and guess who’s the largest comsumer of fur from china and canada? Americans! Also in india they think americans are gross cause they kill cow and cow is sacred and koreans like me don’t get how snail from russia is so good we have different cultures people! But in the end we are all equuualy digusting so don’t try to dump everthing on Asia rasict !

  • Carla* says:

Thats why my home is full of recues!! I would rather be in company of animals then with so called humans!! Makes me sick these twisted individuals are not in prison!! Imagine doing that to human kids they would have locked the door and threw away the key!! Good grief WHERE the hll is this race headed?? To hll thats where!!

  • Anon says:

I honestly don’t mean to sound racist but I hate Asian countries more and more everyday. I know other countries aren’t innocent but this is just ridiculous. Really it makes me sick. Fur dolphins sharks whales now circuses dogs cats eating animals alive who knows what else I’m forgetting. I mean really is there any animal you don’t treat like complete pieces of sht? You make me sick. I don’t mean to offend those who don’t condone or personally participate in this but this just is beyond frustrating and heartbreaking.

Crazy Psychopaths deserve everything they got coming to them.

  • Lauren Holt says:

Hayley no God will forgive US PeTA members and vegetarians. The other people maybe not.

  • Raquel says:

Oh my goodness! Some of those bears are tiny things! That video is a blatant display of horrid behavior. I really wish these people and others like them would be able to experience for themselves what they are doing to these animals. People who have this mindset behave this way are more animal than the ones they abuse.

  • yolibeth says:

This is really upseting and heartbreaking!! They must have been really terrified!!
