Australia Rejects Yet Another PETA Ad

Written by PETA | November 3, 2007

I can’t think why. We had this all set up with the billboard company and everything, and then they changed their minds at the last second. Is it possible that there are some sheep farmers who don’t want people asking them difficult questions? For more info on mulesing, and our campaign to stop it, please click here.

And for the inevitable knee-jerk response from sheep farmers who are going to say “But we have to slice these sheep up — it’s the only way to prevent flystrike!”: 1.) This crisis is your fault in the first place for breeding sheep who can’t survive in the climate. 2.) Here is a long, painstakingly researched list of humane, effective alternatives to mulesing. And 3.) If you refuse to accept that there’s a way to do your job without hideously torturing animals, well, then maybe it’s time to get a new job.

As an Australian I feel the need to support our farmers. I do feel that mulesing needs to be phased out with some sort of alternative put into place but I think that sufficient research and time needs to be spent to ensure that the alternatives presented are as effective against flystrike as the current methods. As an animal rights activist I have the animals longterm interests at heart. However sometimes a bit of pain is better than a long period of enduring extended agony and the current method is to ensure minimal cruelty later on. I think that the system needs to be dealt with and criticised NOT our hardworking farmers. They do what is in the interest of the sheep and the wool… essentially they both rely on each others wellbeing.

I THINK IT IS DISCUSTING WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM POOR INNOCENT ANIMALS PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE MORE HEART.ITS BAD ENOUGH THAT WE EAT THEM THEY COULD LET THEM GO IN A HUMAIN WAY HOW WOULD PEOPLE LIKE THIS HAPPEN TO THEM IM DISCUSTED IT IS HORRIFING POOR ANIMALS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Swanky says:

Ok so i see that ppl say mulesing is good and the other half that say its horrid so why cant we comprimise? how about giving the sheep effin pain relief? The fact that we are in the 21st centry and still act like sadistic cavemen makes me sick. the fact that people who make a crapload of money cant even think of a simple pain relief method is ridiculous. Oh poor farmers have it so bad! Oh and to the people who said it needs to be done ok fair enough.. so how do we go about preventing flystrike to you because the crud coming out your backside needs to be cut out… mmmm how about we tie your arms and legs together and cut off part of the inside of your jatz cracker with no painkillers then cut the ropes off your hands and feet and thow you into a dusty paddock or a shed with no light and no room? Id like to see the look on your face after going through in humans eyes minor surgery with out pain relief. what do you do when you have a headache or feel pain? take something so tell me what the eff do these poor animals have to take? they take nothing but abuse torture from the hands of greedy money hungry parasites and then they get tortured and killed what a great life all for your benefit I might add. Makes you think you have it pretty bloody good huh?

  • Thomas James says:

This sort of knee jerk reaction to a image is typical of a nation of insulated wowsers. They have removed themselves so far from there food and natural resorses they most would not be capable of getting there hands dirty themselves even though it sustains them. yet one image and they are against mulesing a balanced view would show the alternative of a flyblown sheep. Anyone who has any idea knows mulesing is the best option for the sheeps welfare. If this world is to survive it is these same hummvie wowsers neeed to see how there lifestyle causes more than a sheep to have a sore bum.

  • Caboose (Combine Slayer) says:

so a billboard company is Australia? WEIRD! Then that company kicked ass in WW2 with theiq Austens Stens Owens Lee Enfield SMLEs Brens tin hats and Owens!

  • Caboose (neutral, blue army. Blood Gulch Outpost Alpha) says:

rojo I hate the U.S. Where have our Lincolns FDRs and Washingtons gone? Right now it is crumbling so thats why I want to move back to Chile which is like the U.S but without the sinking economy and corruption.

  • rojo says:

ariel I have been lucky enough to visit the US a couple of times. Not so much culture shock though as the majority of our TV and movies are from the US. More awe at the infrastructure and the number of people everywhere. And the size of the meals!

  • Ariel says:

rojo If I were able to go to Aus. I KNOW I would purchase a oneway airline ticket for the exact same reasons you had mentioned previously definitely the wildlife the beaches that I see on tv and the lovely people from my experiences with them. So much of beautiful nature to enjoy the animals along with such cheerful people. I don’t know if you have ever been to the U.S. but if not I think you would experience what is known as “culture shock.” I had a brief experience with that upon my return here after having been to the islands to where I also should have had a oneway ticket. Anyway I’m going to hold you to that to hug a koala bear for me BUT don’t get hurt! So just make sure you have some eucalyptus for him or her to eat!

  • Mars says:

A question. If the billboard company chose not to run your ad then why are you attacking the entire country but not the billboard company? Did the PETA check bounce? Interesting that you posted the COMPANY chose not to run your ad as is their rightbut PETA goes after the entire country. Why didn’t PETA go to another billboard company?

  • rojo says:

ariel a shame that you can’t I’m sorry to hear that. I’m in NSW where I’m fairly sure it’s against the law to hug a Koala. If I come across one I’ll hug it for you anyway. Incidently they have strong sharp claws that can do serious damage if they feel the need to defend themselves.

  • Caboose (neutral, blue army. Blood Gulch Outpost Alpha) says:

Australia kicks arse! Its the only country thats also a continent.

  • Ariel says:

rojo Unfortunately I will never be able to visit Aus. but I used to meet a lot of Aussies on several holidays locations where we were mutually visiting. ALL of them were very very lovely cheerful people not because they were on holiday but I could sense that was their normal nature. So that has been my optimistic impression of Aussies for many years. I completely realize that a whole continent of people cannot be perceived to be the same as those who I had met. But I can only hope for the sake of the sheep that the type of kindness from the Aussies I met is the most widely spread prominent characteristic that will soon prevail to end any suffering that the sheep endure. Please hug a koala bear for me something I always wanted to do!

  • rojo says:

ariel apologies for the delay. To begin with I don’t have a problem with activists drawing attention to the practise of mulesing and in their doing so addressing the pain. What i do find objectionable is to say it is the farmers fault because what was acceptable during the hundreds of years breeding and growing has nothing to do with current day farmers. They have agreed to end mulesing by 2010 but are still being chastised even though the alternatives are not yet available. I keep reading that mulesing is unnecessary but know that all alternatives involve the sheep having a bare breech. I take particular umbrage when it comes to descriptions like “torturing” because mulesing is not done simply to inflict pain nor for some sort of pleasure. It is done for the benefit of the sheep and hence the farmer. Caris makes a reasonable point in that mulesing has been the norm for so long that it has been done as previous generations did. Done with the knowledge of what could happen to the sheep through breech flystrike in good conscience. I wouldn’t call it brainwashing though. In essence I do listen to what you have to say but feel the need to speak up when misinformation is presented. Particularly agenda driven misinformation. Hopefully you do visit Australia one day it has some really unique wildlife great beaches and lovely people.

  • Ariel says:

Hi caris Nice to hear from you!

  • Ariel says:

To Rex’s mom Thank you for questioning the quote. I’m really sorry to say that Edison did indeed electrocute animals but I won’t go into the extent of it. However I gather from his quote that he saw the errors of his ways felt guilt towards the end of his life about a several things he confessed and most definitely included himself as being a “savage” by saying “we.” As with some other notables in history and current people who are not particularly famous we have those who at one time were cruel towards animals realized their wrong actions then became outspoken in favor animal issues. So I suppose that Edison left that same type of legacy that is now being honored by animal rights’ activism.

  • caris says:

all due respect I’m from Australia and some of my family live on farms. I appreciate that you might be very upset about the whole mulesing thing but did you ever consider that maybe they are just carrying on with stupid beliefs? kinda like the way people are brainwashed into eating meat from an early age and then see nothing wrong with it in adulthood. i think the agressive angle you’re taking won’t help though. knowing our culture quite well i think people are more inclined to push your buttons just to get a rise as opposed to taking on board what you’re trying to say which i do believe is very important. i think if you want to persuade people to change maybe you need to tell them how it will benefit them instead of getting angry at them for being stupid. i’d be happy to help with that one email me!

PETA is not always right you know.

  • MLO says:

Debra Poston in case Jack did not reply you can report animal abuse on PETA’s site. Go to http://www.peta.org and scroll to the bottom where it says “Contact”. It will redirect you to a page for “reporting abuse”. Thankyou!

  • Rex's mom says:

To Ariel who posted the quote by Thomas Edison. I may be wrong and please correct me if I am but I heard somewhere that Edison electrocuted many dogs in his experiments. I hope I am wrong and misheard.

  • Ariel says:

rojo I’ve never been to Austrailia would have loved to have the chance to go. I’ve never done any mulesing or anything of that nature in order to be considered personally handson knowledgeable about it. So may I ask you since you are more familiar with this situation and inform us about it from your knowledge why are the knowledgeable views of ar’s activists in general so unacceptable for you to learn from us what we have to say? What I am trying to say is proper openminded learning goes both ways.

  • Carla says:

Another ploy to hide their sick sadistic practices!

  • Caboose says:

Mulesingno point Cant you process the wool and destroy the parasites without mulesing?

  • Jenny Hunter says:

I cannot belive ther is people out there that would do this to animals.

  • Kimberly says:

What a tragedy. I am so grateful to the Animal Rights movement and the free press for bringing this sensless cruely and greed out in the open. I Just got back to NYC after a four year haitus. Walking along Columbus Avenue I noticed what looked like uhgs in a store window and sure enough thats what they were. Along with the ugly ughs was a sign reading Austrain wool……… What a disgrace. Pamela………Help! There all over the place. And………… Apparently Sardis of all places is still serving faus gras and veal. When I looked at the menu I almost became physically ill. Right before walking out I said to the maitredummy Have you no Shame! I’d be pretty incensed if I was a celebrity and my picture was hanging on the WALL OF SHAME!

  • Cheryl White says:

This is inhumane. What are you thinking? or are you?

  • rojo says:

So did the billboard company give peta’s money back or was it fleeced? 1 Australia’s climate is highly varied some regions closely mirror the mediterranean climate. others are cooler most hotter. The key difference is the Aussie blowfly part of the environment. Humans artificially adapt to different environments eg sunscreen vaccines air conditioning etc why would we think we couldn’t adapt sheep. We do. 2 That particular mulesing “research” paper is highly selfcontradictory and the conclusions drawn are not supported by the data. Happy to elaborate but suggest everyone interested read the link first. 3 Some farmers intend changing from growing wool to sheep meat and cattle production. A hollow victory for animals. Well done peta. Who needs a different job? “But we have to slice these sheep up it’s the only way to prevent flystrike!” Currently it is the most effective preventative of breech flystrike for the majority of sheep in Australia. Other alternatives are still in either the testing or propogation stage. Full implementation by 2010. Ultimately breeding will be the solution to mulesing. Argument for immediate ending of the mulesing is merely cheap point scoring and would be detrimental for the sheep until the alternatives actually exist commercially.

Oh I just noticed on the front page “Ask Australian Prime Minister to end lamb mutilations” Don’t worry about Johnny he wont be PM for much longer. You’re better off asking Kevin Rudd.

  • AnimalLib says:

Well put mentioning alternatives aswell. Good job. Although I can see why this ad would be somewhat offensive.

  • Mars says:

ROTFLMAO! A socialist group with a communist agenda complaining about a socialist goverment and not having the freedom to do what you want. FYI When you attempt to tell others what they can or cannot do then atleast have the intelligence to figure out it may come back on you.

  • Debra Poston says:

I need to know who to contact at PETA to report animal cruelty. I am committed to making a difference in animals everywhere I’m starting in my backyard Gallatin TN at the Sumner County Animal Control facility where there has been documented abuse to dogs and cats who knows what other animals have suffered… I am appalled and want to become actively involved in not only Tennessee’s abuse cases but cases involving animal cruelty everywhere. Please help me by telling me whowhere I can get with like minded individuals to help stop this insane behavior! Please send me emails. Thank you.
