Aretha Franklin: ‘Joy to the World’–Except for Animals

Written by PETA | December 3, 2009

Aretha Franklin sang at the annual Rockefeller Center tree-lighting ceremony last night. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who got chills from her appearance—but not because of her singing … oh, no. My skin crawled because the Queen of Soul Cold wore this:

Aretha Franklin

You may recall that Franklin was voted PETA’s Fugliest Fur Hag in 2008. The hideousness she wore last night suggests that the face of fur wants to lock in first place for the upcoming 2009 vote. Can one of her “people” please explain to her—very slowly so she’s sure to comprehend—that she does not want to be voted the world’s most heinous person again? Pretty please?

  • catherine Reimer says:

I am looking for Lois Koch who once lived in Salem Oregon. I noticed there was a Lois Koch that mentioned something about the fur. Is that you Lois?

  • rick says:

We retired to rescue animals. Aretha I once admired you and your talent…bought your music and attended your concerts. That was then and now is now. MONEY DOES NOT BUY CLASS.

  • July whitby says:

AF does not look after her dogs. One dog was taken by a professional to be re homed after neglect.

  • Mandy B says:

SNL made fun of her saying “Aretha Franklin was caught in a bear’s mouth”. Hahaha! That is soooo friggin’ UGLY!!! I thought PETA helped her out of a foreclosure once only if she agreed to stop wearing fur… forever.

  • carla says:

Hag Hag Hag … Your singing also sucks Aretha!!!!

  • clefairy says:

I hope she likes a fur coat covered in puke cuz that’s what I’ll do to it if I ever see her wear it in front of me.

  • Michele says:

Is she PURPOSELY trying to look like an old hag? What a mess. I barely know who she is anyway.. singer perhaps?

  • David says:

If she’s that determined to wear fur why doesn’t she proudly wear the rest of the dead carcass that was destroyed so that she can flaunt the cruelty in which she is determined to be seen?

  • susan says:

When I see her I shudder because she is usually wearing something made from fur.I always think how many poor animals had to suffer to make a coat that big! Never cared for her or her music.

  • Karen C says:

Aretha is incredibly talented and seems like a nice woman. I think she’s just old fashioned ignorant. People used to think fur was a sign of wealth success. She from another era. Please stick to the subject at hand…that fur is evil. It’s immature unnecessary to insult her because of her size.

  • Tamra says:

Absolultely repulsive!!! Where in the world does she get the idea that this look is attractive??? Take a look around for goodness sakes. I wish whoever put her on would have vetoed her outfit. Ugh.

  • mike says:

she looks like a big baboon

  • Maria says:

Why the HELL do these stupid broads think wearing fur makes them attractive??? It doesn’t! It makes them look fat tacky and EVIL! People sometimes get on my case for “judging” furwearers and other animal abusers. All I have to say is that if they met a child abuser or a rapist they sure as hell would judge that person and animal abusers are in the same boat as the rest of the criminals out there. Only worse because some criminals are forced into that lifestyle. No one forces these skanks to kill cute and cuddly little forest critters.

  • victor cazares says:

shes so ugly like her coat i give props to jay leno for making gun of her in her show for wearing this

  • Susan T says:

While your statement is true in theory Reverend Shramm there comes a time when people need to take a stronger stand for what they believe in and know to be right and true. Aretha Franklin refuses to embrace the facts and I find that unacceptable especially coming from a family that was so Godcentered. God created all life and no one will ever convince me that brutalizing these creatures simply for vanity was part of His devine purpose for mankind. She needs to step into the light.

  • Lauren says:

I find it simply gross that anyone would want to wear a dead animal. Common sense ppl Would you pick up roadkill and wear it as a hat?

  • John Carmody says:

It’s such a shame she continues to wear fur often full lenght fur coats. I can only imagine she is very old fashioned and outdated by continuing to be so brave to wear a full lenght fur coat. I mean today it’s a public liability to be seeing in a fur. It’s such a shame she wear fur because her duet with George Michael was amazing. She needs to rethink her hideous fashion sense.

  • Rev. Meg Schramm says:

Aretha Franklin comes from a time when fur was the ultimate status symbol…when you became succesful you went out and bought a fur coat. It is hard for some people to change as I well know because I have a hard time with that myself. When I see Aretha I remember listening to her on the radio when I was very young. Her dad was a preacher and she used to sing at services when she was 15 years old. I did not actually see her on t.v. until years later when blacks finally began to be seen on television. There is an old saying “You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” PETA should keep applying persistant but gentle non name calling pressure perhaps sending literature featuring all older performers who have sworn off fur and keep writing to her asking her to please stop wearing it!!

  • Mila says:

I loved her music as a kid then when I started seeing her using the fur of others her voice just turned sour to my ears. Singing all about love and gospel means nothing if the singer has no empathy.

  • barbie says:

She has always been a fur hag as long as I have ever known of her. She evidently must be a cold hearted person. Makes me sick. I can’t believe no one has asked Tyler Perry about his fur passion as well…Furs are everywhere in his movies and on his shows…

  • Mrs. Lois Koch says:

Really Really sorry to have seen that horrible site of Ms. Franklin wearing that “coat”! I would have thought she would know better as more and more ARE NOT doing that 1940’s thing!! Yes! it was considered “chic” so many years ago. For Heaven’s Sake! WE ARE NOT IN THE 1940’s ANYMORE!!!!!

  • julia kershaw says:

So much talent…unfortunately so little brains….what was her PR manager doing? They are’nt seen holding a cigarette or drinking on stage it is not a ‘good look’….. well neither is fur !!!

  • Michele says:

Why do some people think it’s cool or sophisticated to wear a corpse???

  • Heidi says:

What I don’t understand is that she shaves her legs and under her arms I hope but then she covers her whole body with hair.Think about it. It doesn’t make sense.

  • matt in chicago says:

no wonder she has to scream and beg for some respect….she’ll get none from me…nobody that would wear 40 to 50 dead animals on one coat will….animals…theyre not ours to eat to wear or to exploit. go vegan or go AWAY.

  • NT says:

Fashion CRIME…literally. Someone please tell her to get a new stylist!!!!!

  • susieq says:

Anybody else at Fur Free Friday? I go every year and we are starting to make a difference too bad we have so far to go with socalled sophisticated people!

  • Sandra Kirchberger says:

fugly is an understatement!! You would think that a person who is the same size as an elephant would have compassion for animals! she is sooooooo ugly! I hope everyone boycotts her and the other fur whores out there like Madonna!! I hope she reads this too!!

  • Rainbow Warrior says:

this is iceage number one where is sharon stoneage for to make a company? so i rather prefer the beautiful clean vegan face of sweet natalie portman and cute tobey maguire indeed!!!!

  • rosa says:

ARETHA FRANKLIN is a HASBEEN. Morally it’s all downhill for Aretha. Unfortunately her clothes “HAVE BEEN” lovely furry innocent creatures. Unlike the wild animals tortured for their skins there’s nothing lovely or innocent about Aretha she’s cruel willful and selfish. She shows NO “respect” for the “natural” world!!!

  • Soliel says:

OMG it’s so UGLY!!! It’s amazing that fur was considered glamourous when it’s so so ugly. It’s all bulky and big and brutish looking. YUCK! Not to mention cruel. Ms. Franklin…if you want respect yourself…give respect to ALL.

  • Jeff Dowdle says:

I wonder how many poor animals died for her coat. She is gross and tacky. Her career is as dead as her coat! She has my vote!

  • vegancoin says:

i think i’m gonna be sick. another twisted useless artifact of the peace and love generation living in the material world. from gospel singer to queen of soul to fur hag. she even has a presidential medal of freedom that she can call her own. how sad. ya treated me mean oh you treated me cruel.. chain of fools. fur what is it good for? absolutely nothing

  • judith basye says:

I couldn’t believe what I was seeingthat was the ugliest fur I’ve ever saw. What a disgusting performanceShe should be ashamed of herself wearing an animal and it didn’t even fit right. What a poor impression she made.

  • Lisa says:

How do we know that is not faux fur? I am not quite ready to insult celebrities when I have no confirmation that the article of clothing is real or not. However fake or real it certainly looks stupid on people. Fur belongs on cute fuzzy animals.

  • farah says:

    She looks horrible.

  • Melissa says:

When will people start to understand that wearing fur is NOT attractive in fact it is down right hideous!

  • Rex's Mom says:

When she didnt wear fur at Obama’s inauguration I thought maybe she changed her ways. I guess not. I never liked her and now I really dont like her! She looks hideous in that fur. She is way too big to wear it. Makes her look like a bear but then I dont want to insult bears!

  • kerry says:

ummmmmm what can I say queen of OFF always has been and always will be please dont tell me she does’nt know where her fur came even my eleven year has asked me “where do they and how do they get fur coats” its not rocket science to know your wearing something that does’nt belong to you. I’m appalled that someone with a backgroung such as hers does’nt have a little more compasion it’s kinda weired really when you think about how people were treated like slaves and hated it but have no consideration how another earthling may feel about being treated with the same disregard. I’m perplexed.

  • MaKitsch says:

omg that’s disgusting por favor que alguien le diga que eso es desagradable! Adems ella se ve fea.

  • Nicholas says:

hahahahaha aretha franklin shud not wear fur cuz animals r good.

  • geckmo says:

Sad they want to impress people by wearing fur of a tormented animal. Maybe it would help the animals if people could see existing videos of animals being killed for fur. Why don’t they have feelings for animals? My kitties are teaching me to love again. B

  • Susan T says:

I really don’t understand people like Aretha Franklin Mary J. Blech! Beyonce and others who wear fur. Do they just want to “thumb their proverbial noses” at caring people or are they simply flatliners when it comes to extending compassion to other beings? Rest assured I don’t listen to buy or support ANY actress artist or celebrity who continues to wear fur. Here that Madonna? Aretha looks like a big fat doll from the 1940’s in her tortured animal skin coat. Shame on you!

  • Brian says:

Even if this thing is fakehighly doubtfulit is still hideous. She has my vote.

  • s says:

She must REALLY love fur as it wasn’t even cold enough to be wearing it which is usually the excuse. Fugly fur hag!

  • Anna says:

Her career nowadays is as dead as her coat.
