ANTM Gets Really Weird

Written by PETA | March 13, 2008

Did anyone catch the America’s Next Top Model last night, where the models wrapped themselves in meat and paraded around a slaughterhouse? I honestly don’t know what to say about this, except, like, please don’t do that anymore, ANTM. You’re going to alienate a lot of viewers who care about animals.

Fortunately, we have a Communications Department for these sorts of occasions, and (thankfully) they’re way more articulate than I am. So here’s PETA’s official response to the ill-conceived show for those who have been writing in about it:

No matter how beautifully it is presented, flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal. Meat represents bloody violence and suffering, so if that’s the look they were going for—they achieved it. Instead of swathing models in meat, we wish they had followed in the footsteps of PETA pinups Pamela Anderson and Alyssa Milano who show off their “natural beauty” in outfits made of lettuce leaves for PETA’s “Let Vegetarianism Grow on You” ad campaign.

are you kidding me? Tyra has always been nice generous open and charming. so just cause she had another crazy idea she is getting in trouble for it. come on its not just Tyra’s idea I’m sure besides doesn’t someone need to approve of something before it happens? i think the meat idea was kinda cool. i am no variegation and see no point in being one because just cause one person stops eating meat doesn’t mean the whole population will.

I sent an email to CWTV with the following comment “I feel compelled to share with you the overwhelming disappointment I experienced while watching the episode of America’s Next Top Model where models wore raw meat sewn together. I actually had to look away as my daughter continued to watch it was so repulsive. As a society it is perfectly acceptable to kill animals for food and nutrition but to take the life of an animal for purposes of vanity and commerialism is morally wrong. I am shocked that no one on the show saw a problem with the image this projected it wasn’t sexy it was wasteful cruel and entirely in poor taste. Does the show have a moral compass? Will models start posing with cigarettes and guns next? Where do you draw the line? Tyra is an influential female role model but I am disgusted that she approved of slabbing raw meat on models for a photo shoot. Don’t you think that meat could have been put to better use? Perhaps donating it to homeless shelters etc. It is unfortunate but our family will need to boycott this show until a public apology for airing such an insensitive use of meat is issued.” Although I am a vegetarian I did not write my comment from a vegetarian point of view I wanted to send a mainstream perception that what they did would disturb anyone even meat eaters.

It’s right there before their eyes these slaughtered innocent lives and the models remain unmoved. This deadening of the senses starts so early in life.

  • Lisa says:

While watching the episode in question show I saw the preview of what was coming. I deleted the partially viewed episode from my Tivo cancelled any future scheduled recordings of America’s Next Top Model. I will no longer watch any show associated with Tyra Banks I am terribly dissapointed in her. Wearing bloody carcasses is not fashionable it’s pathetic cruel disgusting.

  • Melissa Vigna says:

yeah i was kinda weirded out when i saw that.

  • Kelly says:

This episode was disgusting! I was a loyal viewer of America’s Next Top Model and because of this episode I will never watch it again. I also sent an email voicing my dissapointment with this situation.

  • Sara Venney says:

My 16year old daughter and I were totally disgusted by this episode. I have always thought the show is rather tacky but I do like to watch some of the shows which my daughter chooses. However after seeing this episode I will boycott the show unless I hear that ANTM has made a public apology. By the way I tried to call the phone number listed above but didn’t really get through to anyone there is a voice mail which gives no direction for leaving a message. Does anyone know of a valid phone number which can be used to contact the network?

  • Kelley says:

It was pretty grossbut no worse than having models wear leather or feathers or down. Maybe this will help some viewers make the connection between killing animals for meatfurleather etc.

  • Elizaebth Sandoval says:

Tyra why oh why did you do that. I was a big fan but that really disapointed me. You wont wear fur but you will wear make up from companies that animal test you let your models wear meat from tortured animals but oh ya you went green last segment right well if thats the case mabey someone should remind you that animals are part of this world to and takeing care of them takes care of the world to.

  • Maria says:

I do have to say that i watch the show but when i saw what tyra was making these girls wear i thought it was disgusting and tasteless.

  • kayla says:

i have been watching antm for a really long time and when i saw that my heart sank ! i just kept hoping that someone would refuse to do it. but no one did. its amazing some of the girls freak when they have to do a nude photoshoot or with a snake or whatever but they can prance around in a dead animal ! that doesnt make sense to me

  • Judith, Freedom Fighter for Animals says:

Abunch of whores dressed in meat do they have any idea how that meat came to be? What that meat went through? Do the whores no how much cruelty that meat went through. NO they don’t because the are stupid old whores… Peace!

  • Tamara says:

I guess they had to top the show where the models posed among real homeless people. I think it might have worked.

  • Juan del Hierro says:

I was completely appalled as soon as I saw it today. I knew to come to this site to see what can be done. I will send a letter but if you guys let me know of anything else that PETA is thinking of doing I will join!

ew seriously? Man I am glad I never watch that show….so um Jack America’s Next Top Model? Doesnt seem like a very guyish show to watch. ignorance is also murder.

  • Giullia Cossano says:

This episode seriously disgusted me. I couldn’t understand the logic behind the photoshot and it made me want to lose my lunch. I will be sending a letter to Ms. Tyra Banks. Thanks so much for all you do.

  • Joan says:

You know when I saw that they would be doing a shoot in a meat packing plant I thought it would be for the sake of expanding the knowledge of abuse in slaughter houses. It’s really to bad that they went the direction they did.

  • BullyDawg says:

I stopped watching before this happened simply because it’s TIRED. They’re obviously trying too hard now…this show’s done and they need to cancel it.

  • Lindsay Thomas says:

I’m speechless. My only hope is that everybody who viewed that episode is now as horrified by the meat industry as I am. Those poor animals died to be disposable panties for a bunch of idiot wannabe models. Do these girls have any values or brains? Obviously not. Not one of the airheads even questioned it. Somebody should skin them alive and put them out of their misery.

  • Carla says:

Alot of people turn a blind eye to the atrocities happening to the animals raised for meat. So this may turn out to be a good thing. I personally do not watch the show but alot of people I heard are talking about it and are grossed out and turned off from “meat”. Growing up my mom would try to get me to eat meat and say the chicken was made from flour and water and it wasn’t from a actual “chicken”.

  • Sarah says:

ew seriously? Man I am glad I never watch that show….so um Jack America’s Next Top Model? Doesnt seem like a very guyish show to watch.

  • Brandon Becker says:

This show is truly sickening. PETA’s response is righton. This is a violent industry that should be rejected by all who value compassion equality and respect.

  • Mary Ellen Skinner says:

This show was appalling! Women wearing dead carcasses should not count as fashion in anyone’s books. I myself have decided to boycott ANTM as a consequence of their illconcieved show idea. Where can I send a letter vocalizing my disgust???

  • Lori says:

This show lost both of my daughters after this episode. I have never watched. They are trying to make it controversial to drum up more viewers I guess. How pathetic. Too bad they can’t be a success on the merit of it just being a worthy show. Of course to me they are all a bunch of morons anyway. Even if I ate meat what is the point? Seriously stupid.

  • Eric Silberstein says:

I hope they sanitized themselves thoroughly. Even the smallest amount of raw meat left untouched or cleaned can cause contamination of the body leading to disease. It seems like a waste of life on both sides all for higher ratings. Folks the times of idiocrocy have long arrived.

  • Theresa Lopez says:

I am very surprised that Nigal the Phtographer let this happen he is very involved in saving harp seals. I actually stopped watching that show when I found out that Cover Girl test’s on Animals but I can’t even imagine how discusting it was What a joke!!

  • Lee says:

Oh TYRA! You won’t wear fur so instead you make others drape themselves in flesh? you are a FRAUD!

  • Shelley Vorenkamp says:

I did see that and it was very disturbing. The picture that Tyra had taken of herself was just sad. Perhaps she has so much going on that she has run out of ideas and cannot think clearly? Maybe that’s why she did such an irresponsible episode?

  • Rose Corletto. says:

I did not see that .i hate those shows a lot.is very sad to read it this is a very sick world we are living in .It only shows how ugly this womans truly are inside their selfish black heart.they all clearly lack compassion towards animals i wish someone cut their flesh and wear it.that will be AWESOME.THEY CAN GO TO HELL .

  • Canaduck says:

I saw this episode and was so grossed out that I literally had to stop watching.

  • Saeran says:

Thank you! I was thinking about this when I watched it last night. I was actually shocked that no one spoke up and pointed out the insanity here. But I guess if people eat meat and wear leather this isn’t much different. I found it very disturbing though.

  • Courtney says:

I watched this episode and pretty much threw up all over myself. It’s funny how there pulling this crap while Twiggy isn’t there anymore..I wonder what she would’ve thought of this horrendous idea. It was tasteless tactless and vomit inducing pretty much the whole fashion industry as a whole the ones that still use fur and leather that is

  • Lauren Truscott says:

I was so disgusted by that episode. I have watched almost every ANTM episode guilty pleasure but I just can’t watch it anymore after this. I “almost” boycotted the show after finding out covergirl tests on animals but this was the last straw. I am wondering if this is why Twiggy left the pannel? She seems like an animal lover did i hear that somewhere of just a guess?. What a waste and not a word about the welfare of animals.

  • Pamela Oates says:

wow! I almost don’t know what to say about this! I’m assuming this was FOR animals. I didn’t see this so I don’t know. I hope it was like when Janice Dickinson got her models involved with a PETAprotest against fur. But I definitely agree…flesh from a tortured animal is flesh from a tortured animal.

  • Margarita says:

I cannot imagine for a second how this is supposed to be glamorous.

  • Steven says:

    totally discusting I’m sending a letter !!

  • mabel says:

It was a weird idea for a photo shoot but this show isn’t really turning out actual top models and is a joke. Ignoring it is the best policy. I seriously doubt anyone watching felt motivated to go eat greater quantities of meat because of it.
