Lab Investigated by PETA Bites the Dust

Written by PETA | November 5, 2010

First, Professional Laboratory Research Services shut its doors just days after PETA released the findings of our disturbing undercover investigation there. Now, Covance’s horrendous Vienna, Va., laboratory, which PETA investigated five years ago, is closing up shop.

During PETA’s 11-month investigation at Covance, our investigator documented that workers struck, choked, and screamed obscenities at frightened and “uncooperative” monkeys. Monkeys suffered from rectal prolapses as a result of constant stress and diarrhea, and baby monkeys’ noses bled daily because workers shoved hard tubes up their nostrils to pump experimental chemicals and drugs into their stomachs. As a result of PETA’s investigation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited and fined Covance for serious violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

PETA has actually been battling this laboratory for nearly two decades. I remember participating in a protest outside the facility back when Covance was known as Hazleton Research Labs, a name made famous by the book The Hot Zone, which was about the Ebola outbreak among monkeys at the now-defunct Hazleton laboratory just a few miles away in Reston, Va.

In addition to closing the hellhole in Vienna, Covance has also scrapped plans to build a massive facility in Prince William County, Va., meaning that thousands of animals will be spared years of loneliness, misery, and pain. Pop the champagne corks, folks! And let’s hope that this trend involving the shuttering of animal laboratories continues into 2011.

This is just too heartbreaking to watch and see the suffering of these poor animals all for what?? i have gone cruelty free and all my products are free from animal testing and ingredients. Gives me some comfort that i am making a change in stop buy products tested on animals. I now hope and pray that more can be done to stop companies using animal testing. And people to really understand what is going on inside these companies. What part of the human race are these people from doing these horrific things to these defenceless animals what action has been taken that they never work with animals or people again.

  • Elizabeth Lanson says:

I am sickened by this. I knew things were bad, but this is much worse than bad. Its horrific. Please send me future updates in the name of the poor animals who can’t help themselves.

  • Jenny says:

I am from Evansville Indiana and there is a Covance clinical site downtown and I really hope this is not going on there. There has to be some law that says some government person that has a sole has to be in the building at all times monitoring what goes on. This is wrong on SO many levels. There are more humane ways of testing these drugs. I understand that without these testings we would not have the cures for many diseases but forcing them down the throats of helpless animals is not the way to do it. When they do testing on humanes they treat them like royality, why can’t the animals get this same treatment? Please PETA, send someone to the Evansville site to be sure this is not going on in my town!

  • Lenne Hotchkiss says:

These people are mentally ill and our taxes are paying for it!! Send congress bazillions of letters, all of them are responsible for deregulations. These animals cannot defend themselves. God will take care of this evil. Trust me.

  • Sabrina says:

PETA, you are my reason to believe that humanity still can be saved… Thank you so much for the efforts you do! I always get inspired by you! I try and fight for animal’s welfare, but I still don’t do that much for animals… Thank you VERY much for all the wonderful things you do!

  • bob says:

Monkeys usualy have such vibrant personalitys but to see them so scares is so sad. The people who do animal testing are seiriosly sick and have to be stopped. This is not fair on the animals who could have had such good lives if they were not stuffed into cages ans killed.

  • FR says:

Dear God – This ones shut down but what about others. Words cannot describe how any human could do this to our primates or any other living creature. Why don’t we test prisoners in jail for life and on death row – that may cut down in horrific crime in our country. The animals don’t deserve any of this but the jailbirds do!!!

  • Marcella Viglioni Terra says:

I am seriously crying right now…..please stop now, let´s help us, they’re animal like us, we’re animal human and they’re animal no human.Equal Rights now!!

  • Andrea says:

Please help shut down Covance in Chandler, AZ. I am horrified, disgusted, and devastated by the cruelty these “test” animals endure. Thank you, PETA, for your dedication to animals.

  • RLR says:

I would like to know if any charges were brought against the technicians who purposely abused these animals. Will they be allowed to work with animals in the future? People who are abusive dont change. They were willing participants and chose to be cruel.

  • Bella says:

I am seriously crying right now, I feel so bad for the monkeys, keep sending me stuff to sign, I am signing everything and I am glad to see the result

  • fenisia pacini says:

Keep up the good work, without PETA investigations animals would never have a chance. This is why I support PETA and other organizations, For the love of the animals.

  • patty says:

Please stop them in Arizona. Not in my backyard or anyone else’s for that matter. How awful this is. Those poor animals and those sick bastards that need to be locked up in their place.

  • vanessa says:

God bless you peta and everyone who has helped put an end to this. this vid brought me to tears. my heart is broken. i will no longer wear a cosmetic brand that has been tested on animals. no longer buy cleaning suplise tested on animals. these people that inflict pain on animals will meet there doom in front of God.

  • Rivia says:

I’m here in Brazil translating this shocking issue to my friends who seems not to believe this Animal AUSCHWITZ is real. God bless you for spreading the news.

  • Andre says:

Nothing will pass by unnoticeable. The justice will be served in time. You laboratory workers have lost respect for life. You are sadistic perverts finding pleasure in torturing and killing animals. One day you will carry the burden of suffering, pain and loneliness the same way you treat animals. God is watching you. You have no right to call yourself a human!

  • crystal says:

Those poor babies 🙁 the lab workers are cruel idiots

  • kayla says:

  • Gandhari says:

i feel like a coward for not being able to watch this.. it’s so hard.

  • Melissa Jo says:

It took everything in me to bear watching the video showing this horrific animal abuse. To the undercover investigator(s): Thank you and bless you for your strength to endure witnessing this abuse first hand, clearly for a considerable time. My heart bleeds for the animals victimized at this facility, and all others operating in this manner. The closing of Covance in Vienna is literally, eliminating a hell on earth for innocent creatures subjected to this torture beyond their control. Congratulations in your success PETA. Let’s bring them all down.

  • Jayden says:

Thank God for PETA i couldn’t watch that video it was cruel and disgusting! Some people are heartless…

  • PETA says:

Shane- Covance does product and drug testing (and still do at their other faciilties). To learn more, please visit:

  • PETA says:

anne sw- PETA has contacted Covance to ask the whereabouts of the animals but have not heard back. The animals surrendered by PLRS have been moved to local animal shelters and other foster situations, and rehoming efforts are underway.

  • Shally says:

Oh, my God ; YES ! I have no words for this … but I still hope that every human being that worked in that labratory dies like all those cute, fluffy, beautiful animals. God, please keep up the great work ! I love you.

  • Shane says:

As an advanced species, there is no reason why we still need to be testing on animals. Does anyone know the specifics of what and why they were testing on these primates?

  • anne sw says:

Hi, what will happen to the monkeys in this lab – also I was very active in the PLRS shutdown – what happened to the dogs and cats rescued from this facility? Anyone know? Thanks

  • deanna says:

just wanted to know what happened to all those animals at the lab. i hope that their remaining lives are some place nice

  • teo2000 says:

    I love you PETA

  • monae7350 says:

I am mostly overwhelmed with joy that more of us are aware and actually involved in making progress for animals who are suffering all around the world. It breaks my heart daily as I continue to read literature and watch graphic videos but without those I would have never ever known about the hidden walls of animal cruelty. That is how I became a vegetarian 6 months ago and I am slowly transitioning into becoming a vegan. I feel good knowing that I am making a difference in helping to decrease animal suffering. WAY TO GO PEOPLE LET’S CONTINUE MAKING A HUGE DIFFERENCE FOR THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES WHO MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE WOOHOO. TUJUANA

  • Jasmine says:

This is ridiculous! Animals are equals to, the mistreatment, neglect and malicious behavious makes me sick. People can be so twisted. This makes me so angry and sad.

  • Stacey says:

As my cat Lilly lays on my lap and purs, I just can’t comprehend how humans can do these thing to these beautifull creatures. Every beat of my heart is for my dog and cats. It’s just plain evil.

  • Somerlea says:

Seeing this, I can feel the color draining from my entire face.  I am sickened that human beings can do this…I am so glad that PETA is making people and consumers aware of these atrocities. My entire family, including my ten year old son have made a commitment this week to only purchase cruelty free products. people like this literally make me sick to my stomach

  • Guest says:

I think these types of laboratories and other place that treat animals with disrespect need to be shut down permanently. The people who do cruel actions like in the video they need to be put in jail for sometime.

  • Cynthia says:

I often wonder what kind of person could work in such a place. It just makes me physically and emotionally ill to know that these kind of places exist.  Thank you and god bless you for all of the work that you do.

  • lauren says:

if there is a university near you that uses animals in labs, organize a protest! we should teach compassion not cruelty. right here in CT both Uconn and Yale have money labs.

  • Rosebud says:

I was so shaken up watching the video of the Covance Laboratory. The sheer terror and pain for these primates broke my heart and made me hug my little dog a bit longer. Thank you to the PETA TEAM for ending this. I hope you keep it up and put more out of business. The best punishment would be to treat the researchers and others we saw in the video to the same treatment the primates had to endure.

  • So what happened to the animals?? says:

So…. what did they do with the animals, after closing the lab ? did PETA save them ???
