Animals in Deep Trouble: Rescues and Relief

Written by PETA | October 1, 2010

We’ve shown you before how PETA’s Cruelty Investigations Department (CID) caseworkers move mountains for animals in dire circumstances. Here is just a glimpse of their recent work:

  • We orchestrated the rescue of four pit bulls who had been left to starve on their chains on an abandoned property in Texas. Local authorities wouldn’t help these dogs, so PETA got an outside agency to assist and is pressing for charges against the dogs’ owner.
  • A good Samaritan who found a mouse stuck fast to a glue trap in a Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) building took the suffering mouse to PETA. We put the mouse out of his misery and asked HRT to stop using cruel glue traps. HRT has agreed.

  • Officials in Missouri refused to help a horse whose eye had rotted out because of a cancerous tumor. After CID contacted the horse’s guardian directly and explained that the only alternative to letting the horse languish was a painless release, the poor animal’s suffering was ended.

  • In rural Ohio, we coordinated a massive effort to trap about 20 feral cats who were suffering from a variety of painful afflictions after the man who was feeding them died. This rural area has no cat shelter and few animal control services, so CID contacted nearby activists and veterinarians who were willing to help. It took multiple visits over two weekends, but these poor cats are no longer suffering.

Please always watch out for animals in need and report all emergencies and acts of cruelty to law-enforcement (police and animal control) officials immediately.

  • Lori says:

It’s not clear to me whether the horse with the rotting eye was able to be helped. I’ve never seen anything like that before. How horrible!

  • mscritter says:

PETA has often been criticized for killing animals in a subtle campaign to discredit all the good that PETA does. And yet, shelters across the country kill animals, including many of the SPCA’s that so many people donate to. Anyone who does not agree that in many cases it’s more compassionate to humanely euthanize, and who has criticized PETA for doing so, has been misled by the corporate media that wants to destroy PETA. PETA is by far one of the most, if not the most compassionate and progressive animal organizations on this planet. I hope PETA survives up to the time when animals are no longer being used and abused by people who just don’t understand the oneness of life.

“Please always watch out for animals in need and report all emergencies and acts of cruelty to law-enforcement (police and animal control) officials immediately.” This makes me sad. I live in Indonesia and people here treat animals like shit and we have no authorities or laws that can protect these animals. One example, a friend’s friend is giving away her dog because she’s having financial issues. She’s been keeping the poor dog inside a cage 24/7 and if within 2 weeks nobody is willing to keep him then she’s selling the dog’s MEAT FOR PEOPLE TO EAT. AND YES, THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY EAT DOG MEAT HERE! AND IT’S COMPLETELY LEGAL TO KILL YOUR OWN PET. WELCOME TO INDONESIA. Tomorrow I’m going to her house to see the dog (and kill her (the owner, not the dog)) with a friend and hopefully she’ll take him home with her. I’d love to take him with me trust me but I live with my parents and they have a no dog policy. =(

  • Sonja Gay says:

Toby, you blame ‘a lack of knowledge’ & ‘a lack of intelligence’. I disagree, I blame a lack of empathy, humaness as demonstrated by the Wake Forest story http://www.peta.org/…/primate-photos-land-wake-forest-in-trouble.aspx

Surely a vet and other university dwellers cannot be accused of lacking knowledge or intelligence in the strict sense of the term. How very, very sad…

  • Rev. Meg Schramm says:

Has anyone at PETA ever thought of contacting the show “Dirty Jobs” and having them film a day in the life of a PETA Animal Cruelty Investigator? By that I mean having Mike Rowe and the crew go out and film scenes like this and then broadcast them on the Discovery Channel.

  • katie4animals says:

what is wrong with people that they would treat innocent creatures so cruelly?

  • Wareham MA says:

There is a very similar situation on Daniel Road in Wareham Massachusetts.  The website referenced above has a several videos – including one of a cat with a horrible tumor.  Dozens of dead kitten bodies are found in the area each year.  A number of years ago 200 cats were removed from the area and the population is on the rise again with little to no response from local authorities.  Very unfortunate.

  • Toby says:

Yikes… that’s a lot of death… I blame ignorance & stupidty for letting those animals get like that. No, not ‘ignorance & stupidity’ the ‘slanderous’ terms, but rather, the dictionary terms meaning ‘a lack of knowledge’ & ‘a lack of intelligence’… big problems those things… how to combat them? Education!

  • James says:

What horrific pictures of such horrific suffering. There is not enough gratitude to express for putting these suffering souls out of their misery.
