How the AKC Kills Shelter Dogs’ Chances at Life

Every dog deserves a loving family, but the breeding and selling of purebred dogs promoted by the American Kennel Club (AKC) destroys the chances of equally deserving dogs at local animal shelters of being adopted because there are not enough good homes to go around. Breeding genetically related animals—whether to make money or to obtain a certain “look” or characteristic—also results in inbreeding that causes painful and life-threatening genetic defects in purebred dogs.

At a time when there are millions of animals literally dying for homes, it is reckless, inhumane, and irresponsible to breed more of them. Yet the AKC opposes lifesaving sterilization legislation —even when it exempts breeders! Please help undo the damage caused by breeders’ propaganda by always adopting dogs (and cats) from shelters and being sure to have them spayed or neutered.
