400 Dogs Seized From Washington Puppy Mill

puppy mill

From Washington state comes another story from the “why you should always adopt, never buy” files.

Today, Benton County law enforcement officials seized more than 400 dogs from a puppy mill owned by 66-year-old Ella Stewart in what they are calling “one of the worst cases” of animal abuse the state has ever seen.

All the dogs reportedly require medical treatment for a variety of ailments, including malnutrition, overgrown nails (which can cause painful foot injuries), and urine burns.

Urine burns! That’s because all these pups were found living in makeshift crates (including shopping carts) that were caked with feces and soaked with urine.

You can bet that this isn’t an isolated incident. Puppy mills, from which almost all pet stores buy their dogs, are breeding grounds (no pun intended) for disease and neglect. The animals who are unfortunate enough to be housed in these hell holes are viewed as commodities, not as living beings who require exercise, love, and care. They are crammed together into cages that they can barely turn around in, they are fed barely enough to survive, and when they suffer from injuries, their wounds go untreated.

So, the next time you’re in the mood to bring a cute, dreamy-eyed pup home, don’t support the Ella Stewarts of the world. Stop by your local animal shelter instead.

If I want to buy a dog from a breeder I damn well should be able to. I am 100% behind PETA to close down abused breeders but for every one bad Puppy Mill there is thousands of Breeders who love animals. Tread lightly PETA and work wisely.

  • Kaitlyn says:

Alright. Come on people! The “humans” Behind all this should have their teeth pulled out and shoved up their nose. These people are useless to the world. For cryin out loud what did these animals ever do to you!?

  • Hannah Forbes says:

ok so i have alot to say… People say dogs a mans best friend correct? Well no human who should actually be alive would ever do this to their “best friend.” And i dont know why the people who do this and other horrible unimaginable terrible no words to describe them crimes i will never understand why those heartless criminals arent killed. maybe its just me but i dont see that much of a difference between people and animals sure animals cant drive or anything like that but they are still there to support people and be friends with humans. People who commite these crimes should be killed in my mind. If someone was to do someone like kiddnap a child they get throwin in prision right?… kidnapping is a horrible thing but isnt murder worse? so if someone was to perhaps SHOOT a puppy they saw on the street or beat a cat to death or SKIN AN ANIMAL ALIVE! isn’t that just as bad or worse?! i think so! People who do this to animals should be killed or be givin the same treatment be treated the way they treated an animal. thats my opinion. and i hope some day very very soon this will stop once and for all. and animals can continue living happily and healthy the way that everyone should be.

Puppy mills are a horrible situation. Responsible breeders are great. I for one am tired of PETA’s attitude toward breeders and people that take pride in the breed of dog they choose to be an ambassador to. I have owned “pound puppies” and purchased a purebred from a breeder. I go to the animal shelter often to adopt a dog but 90 of them are Pit Bulls of which I would never own. I will be purchasing my next puppy from a responsible breeder that cares greatly for their pets. I’m impressed with the number of breeders that require any animal that is not kept to be returned to them. One case 9 years later a dog being returned only to exceed thousands of $’s in vet bills that the breeder is only happy to pay and welcome the animal back in their home.

  • MELANIE says:

please can you update us on whether these puppies have found good homes? I live in South africa and am a concerned animal lover. may the woman did this be given a maximum sentence for this. animals have feeling too because thet can’t talk we need to stand up for them.

  • Ingrid Griffith says:

Apparantly breeders are nothing more than uneducated people who are not capable of earning a living by doing anything intelligent with their brains. They are to be pitied because they just have not evolved to a certain level of intelligence. It is impossible to reason with ignorance. Hopefully laws will be updated to include breeding as animal cruelty and justly punish the guilty. I was disappointed that the Obamas did not select a rescue dog as they eluded to originally.

  • Craig says:

I live within driving distance of this mill. I have the means and will to FORCE the same living conditions on these so called “humans”. I only wish the law would allow me to inflict the exactingly same callousness to these people as the demonstrated to these living beings.

  • Missy says:

we have to get these idiots to stop buying pets from pet stores! as well as make puppymills illegal. i don’t understand why puppymills are not illegal considering the millions of overpopulated cats and dogs killed in shelters. where is the common sense in our legal system? this is a throw away and kill nonsensical society. we need wisdom in our leadership instead what we have are politicians who simply want to get richer. i am sick of the incompetence.

  • Linda Olson-Levy says:

For three years my dog Thomas Hobbes lived as a breeder at a puppy mill. He was confined to a wire cage and subject to mistreatment. He was very fearful of people. Thankfully he was rescued by the Humane Society and he joined our family last August 8th through the auspices of Petfinders.com a wonderful online organization that adopts pets to responsible and loving families. Thomas is now a happy and healthy and delightful member of our family.

  • Tamra says:

Yes I agree with the posters that are outraged. it is so frustrating and it is actually hard for me to comprehend that we have a humanity that allows such atrocities. I try to stay on the bright side which is that even as little as 10 years ago this would have not been so much an issue. There is more awareness now than ever. Little by little we’ll get there. Oprah had the show on puppy mills the EU putting the ban on seal products…..that’s some BIG stuff! The Ringling Trial? HUGE. Like I tell one of the circusfans that I argue with from time to time it circus WILL come to an end. There WILL be a day when animals will no longer be forced to perform such hideous tricks. It’s inevitable. With each new generation we are becoming a more educated compassionate and evolved society.

This is disgusting I feel so sorry for the animals. I also read about a man from Chahalis Washington that had sex with his two dogs Not allowed to own dog for two years This man should never be allowed to own an animal. It is so sad how people abuse animalsI am glad that Peta is the voice for animals.Thank You Peta for all you do to help animals.

  • Chris says:

this is disgusting. i wish i could be cryogenically frozen until the world is a better and safer place for everyone.

A friend of mine adopted a puppy from a busted puppy mill in Ga. Poor Ali has had multiple issues including temproary but Reoccurring Paralysis. They knew there would be issues with her but adopted her anyways. they are wonderful people too bad the Circumstances of Ali’s firsr few months were so horrible. Puppyn Mill owneres are Pure Evil.

  • Doriana says:

What is even worse is that Stewart claimed ‘not guilty’ and if she is found guilty she only faces 90 days in jail and only up to a $1000 fine. 400 dogs have been affected by her but that is all she could possibly be consequenced to. That woman is lucky I’m not her judge.

  • Nicole says:

I live an hour away from the town that this happened in. The owner was arrested and charged with animal cruelty. This puppy mill was found by accident from a police officer responding to a call at the neighbors house. Thank goodness that police officer has a heart and realized something was not right!!

  • carla says:

Every single State should have this banned!!!!! Let’s start concentrating on animal rights senators!!!!!!

  • Rev. Meg Schramm says:

I don’t despise people but I despise the idea some have that animals should be given less consideration than people. Yesterday at church I was talking to a woman who stated she had no grandchildren but her daughter and soninlaw had just adopted a minpin mix. I started to say “I hope they are prepared dogs require almost as much care as a baby” when she rudely cut me off stating an animal is just an animal and a child is a child. I was so angry at this ignorant statement which unfortunately is so typical of the attitudes of this church I am not the pastor there that I had to walk away and take a deep breath. I have a commitment through this church that I have to fulfil but as soon as I am done with that I am walking away never to look back. This is the same church where the pastor preaches animals do not have souls and will not put flowers in the chancellery to comfort a grieving guardian when a beloved service animal or pet dies. I despise the idea that only human life is to be honored and respected.

  • Jessica Wasden says:

i can’t believe people do that to puppies!! they are just babies. just like a human baby they need love and attention.people like this make me sick. i can honestly say i hate this person and hopefully they were put in prison.

  • helen Dighton says:

This sickening practice must be stopped now. We must do all we can to end this.

  • Mitchell says:

thank God for the people who do care enough to help these neglected and abused animals. in my opinion the people responsible for this should be put in prison and treated the same way to see that it don’t feel so good for a living being to undergo those kind of living conditions !

  • Rex's Mom says:

There is a wonderful show on the National Geographic Channel called Dog Town. It is on Friday nights at 10 and has repeats too. Last night they showed dogs seized from puppy mills with really bad medical problems. A poor longhaird Dachshund had such bad tooth rot they had to remove a good portion of his teeth and part of his jaw because of infection and another cute puppy I think a Shi Tzu Sp? was so matted he had to be shaved. This place DOES NOT ever destroy dogs even if they are vicious or otherwise unadoptable. If they can’t be adopted out they live the rest of their lives in this dog sanctuary. Dog Town is in Utah and is a wonderful place for dogs and other animals. It is actually called The Best Friends Sanctuary with Dog Town a part of it. Check it out.

This is a feelgood story and one that is always good to hear. Stop breeding start adopting!!

Awww poor puppies! This just makes me sick!

  • llyn humes says:

I have two dogs who are both rescue animals. I could never buy an animal from a pet shop because I could never be sure that the mother of the animal had been looked after and loved. Breeding farms should be banned.

  • laura Hernandez says:

This palces have to be ban and more all of us have to be watchers to reposrt those

  • Lindsey says:

    I despise breeders.

  • Jessyca says:

400 dogs seized!!! How did this go on for so long without anyone knowing? I would hope there are consequences for this sicko. Does anyone know what she got charged with??

  • N. Nichols says:

I agree 100 with the “adopt. don’t buy’ statement. I also strongly advocate spaying and neutering. Most of the animals that I’ve owned throughout my long long lifetime have been ‘dumpedout’ babies that I’ve adopted spayed or neutered loved and enjoyed.

  • Nick says:

I agree that is is better to take an animal home from a shelter than to get it from a breeder but once it is born isnt it the same taking it home from a store so as to prevent it from being mistreated as it is taking it from a pound which means it has already been shown mistreatment??

  • Karen Nevalsky says:

I don’t understand how this person can only be charged with one count of animal cruelty. as is being reported by the media. Isn’t it time that cruelty to animals was taken seriously. Without significant prison time this type of cruelty will only continue. I hope PETA will start a petition asking that the authorities in Washington prosecute this case to the fullest extent.

  • erica says:

This country is so money hungry that they treat beautiful little creatures like if there dirt!!obama please make this banned from the united states!!this is supposed to be the land of the free and there’s puppies living in shopping carts caked with feces and urine??wht is this world coming 2!? COME ON PEOPLE !!

  • ANNE ALEXANDER says:

I AGREE THIS WOMEN NEEDS TO COMMITED TO THE FUNNY FARM AND THROW THE KEY AWAY. IF SHE ISN’T PUT AWAY SHE WILL DO IT AGAIN. BUT WAIT WHO IS REALLY GUILTY HERE. I THINK BENTON COUNTYWA NEEDS TO STEP UP AND ADMIT THAT THIS IS A CRIME THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEALTH WITH LONG AGO. I REALLY BET THAT THERE HAD BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS MADE AND THEY WERE IGNORED OR TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT COULD BE DONE. AND NOW BENTON COUNTY WANTS DONATIONS TO DESTROY AND DEAL WITH ALL THESE DOGS. JUST LIKE CHILDREN WHERE WERE THE AUTHORITIES WHEN THIS WAS DEVELOPING? OKAY BENTON COUNTY… STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND GIVE AMERICA AN EXPLANATION AS TO WHY YOU ARE NOW DEALING WITH THIS HORRIBLE CASE OF ANIMAL ABUSE. WHEN ARE PEOPLE IN PLACE OF AUTHORITY GOING TO STEP UP AND DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE IN ORDER TO STOP THIS TYPE OF ABUSE ?????????

  • Brien Comerford says:

Every time I read about man’s best friend being abused truamatized and mistreated in puppy mills I shudder when I think about the rest of the animal kingom being treated even worse by the malevolent human race.

  • Melinda M says:

Does anyone know what happend to the owner of the puppy mill?? I hope she gets prosecuted she is so evil to do this to these poor puppys

  • Sharon Gist says:

Thank you Shawna for reporting this. Now if only we could lock all these Puppy Mill breeders in cages as small as the ones that the poor animals suffer in. And let THEM live in their urine. An eye for an eye or as in this case a pee for a pee!

  • april says:

Farmed animals live worse lives than this! Those people running the factory farms should be charged with cruelty. Who would do that to a puppy?

  • Denise says:

Wow now this is something to be happy about. I have a pomchi that my sister had gotten from a breeder and to think that her parents most likely came from a puppy mill saddens me. My dog has so many problems such as a trachea that is collapsing and bad knees she’s only 2 and has trouble walking even though she’s gotten care from the vet for her issues and her teeth are rotting despite proper dental care and dog food. She is well taken care of but is literally falling apart. It’s sad to see how many of these animals and their offspring end up later in life.
