The always incredible PETA India wrapped up 2008 spreading the message of compassion for animals across the country. Check out some photos of their attention-grabbing demos below:

In Mumbai, two activists posed as horses injured by vehicle accidents to show how dangerous the streets can be for these sensitive animals. This demo encouraged Mumbaikars (Mumbai citizens) to say "neigh" to horse-drawn carriages.

Horses aren't the only animals suffering on the streets of Mumbai. Bullocks are forced to pull heavy oil carts and are denied basic necessities. Activists rode through the streets calling for a ban on these cruel carts.

On the other side of the country, in one of Ranchi's biggest schools, five children died and more than 60 became severely ill after being given tainted milk. PETA India immediately rushed to the school and distributed soy milk to more than 200 students.

PETA India also just released this gorgeous new ad asking kite flyers to stop coating their kite string (manja) in glass. While glass-coated manja may be effective in cutting an opponent's kite string, it's deadly for thousands of birds.

Way to go PETA India! Oh, and if you want to congratulate them for all their hard work in 2008, keep in mind their birthday is coming up (PETA India turns 9 on January 14!), and they really love cupcakes.

The point of this post is really to give props to the whole gang over at PETA India, who just released the incredibly exciting news that the city of Mumbai will no longer allow elephants within its borders. Mumbai's compassionate decision will spare many elephants a lifetime of abuse and neglect, and it sends a powerful message to other towns and cities across the country. Now PETA India is expanding the campaign to other cities, and they’ve enlisted India’s A-list to help. They just sent this petition, featuring heavy-hitting Indian celebs like Dilip Kuman, Saira Banu, John Abraham, Raveena Tandon, and others, to Chief Ministers across the country, and hopefully we’ll be hearing more on this issue soon.

Check out how PETA Europe and PETA India celebrated Valentine’s Day a few hours ago. I love it. Love the bed, love the signs, love it all. As you can see, they’re a tiny bit more conservative in Mumbai than Dublin, but I gotta be honest, those wings and the heart bow and arrow are pretty hot.

Wow, check out this photo of Victoria’s Secret supermodel Fernanda Tavares sporting our “No Fur” button. I got it on Valentine’s Day, no less! Of course, I got it from my friend Michael, who she actually sent it to, but whatever, I've never been one to let details get in the way of destiny ...

And here she is in a slightly different pose, in an ad she shot for us a while back.

Fernanda’s not just a pretty face either. Check out her quote from the interview she did while shooting the ad: "Fashion is supposed to be fun, but there is nothing fun about breaking animals’ necks and killing them with genital electrocution—common fates for animals destined to become fur coats," says Fernanda. "The fur industry butchers animals and pollutes our environment. I could never wear fur."
