Remember the scene from Finding Nemo when the shark is reminding himself, "Fish are friends, not food?" He was right, of course, but sometimes people forget that, which is why a PETA mermaid took to the streets of Providence, Rhode Island to remind people that giving up meat for Lent includes fish too.
Fish are intelligent, sensitive animals who have impressive long-term memories. They enjoy gentle contact and brush up against each other like cats who rub against people's legs. And they don't have to be covered in fur to experience pain and fear while being killed.
If you wouldn't hook a kitten, don't hook a fish. Instead, take a peek at our cuddly sea kittens, design a fin ball of your own, and let fish stay under the sea.

Tourists are flocking to Kiryat Yam, Israel, in hopes of spotting a mermaid who has reportedly been seen frolicking during sunset swims, and the Town Council is offering a $1 million reward for anyone who can provide a photograph that proves Ariel's kin are kicking back on local beaches.
If it's a photo of a mermaid they want, we'd be happy to oblige. We're offering to run our stunning "Make a Splash—Go Vegetarian" ad, which makes the case that, like mermaids, fish sea kittens, lobsters, crabs, and other animals of the sea deserve to be treated with compassion and respect.
If you would shun a plate of poached mermaid, why not let Nemo and his buddies off the hook too?

Sculptor Antony Gormley has launched a new artistic endeavor, the One & Other project, in London. He's recruited 2,400 "living sculptures" to stand atop the famous "Fourth Plinth" in Trafalgar Square. Each person gets an hour on the 8-meter-high plinth (which is usually used to display artwork) to do whatever he or she would like—and one lucky PETA Europe supporter was granted a place!
Natalie Simpson sparkled as a sultry mermaid who asked people to go vegetarian.
We're so proud of Natalie for daring to show a little skin in order to save the skins scales of other thinking, feeling beings. If you want to be like Natalie and stand up for animals, take our Pledge to Be Veg for 30 Days and give a fish-friendly diet a try.

Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights? Read more.
