• Furry Devil: Not a Pretty Picture

    Written by PETA

Because Anna Wintour hasn't yet realized that fur is out of vogue and therefore should be out of Vogue—and hideous images of animals suffering on fur farms do not move her—PETA will get the infamous pelt-pusher's attention with a hideous image of … herself.

As Wintour was giving a talk about nuclear physics—wait, sorry, fashion—at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, PETA members held a lively protest outside with signs featuring this picture of the Vogue editor.

We think that "Nuclear" Wintour is the perfect poster girl for the ugly fur trade. What do you think?

  • A 'Berry' Clever Way to Save Lobsters

    Written by PETA

    Blueberries

The last sardine cannery in the U.S. (located in Prospect Harbor, Maine) is about to close its doors, which is great news for the tiniest fish sea kittens. But another company that cuts up and packages lobsters and other sea animals wants to buy the cannery. As we all know, marine animals suffer when they are snagged on hooks, crushed in massive nets, pulled up from their ocean homes, and even boiled alive. Talk about news that'll make your Monday blue.

PETA is urging Maine Gov. John Baldacci to "can the cruelty" and turn the plant into a blueberry cannery instead. Maine produces a quarter of the country's blueberries, so switching to that business would support the local economy and let the cannery workers keep their jobs—not to mention save the lives of countless lobsters and other sea animals. Let's hope Gov. Baldacci says, "Can we do it? Yes we can (blueberries)!"

  • Save Those Lambs' Backsides!

    Written by PETA

    lamb

Last July, we received word that Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) was reneging on its public promise to phase out mulesing by the end of this year. Mulesing is the crude and cruel process of cutting flesh from a lamb's rump with a tool resembling a pair of gardening shears. Afterwards, the lambs lie on the ground in pain for days, unable to stand up. Had AWI gone to work on a bare-breech (smooth rump) breeding program five years ago instead of shuffling its feet, stalling, suing PETA (to no avail), and trying to promote worthless products for the profit of AWI executives, the Australian wool industry would have met its deadline—but that didn't happen. Now, PETA is willing to extend our campaign moratorium if the Australian government agrees to implement a genetic program that would eliminate mulesing within two years. It's time for Aussie officials to stop the mulesing madness.

Thanks to PETA's education campaign, dozens of retailers and designers worldwide have been so appalled that they have abandoned Australian wool. We've asked the office of the U.S. trade representative to make the new timeline a condition of approval of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement, which is currently being negotiated with Australia.

Always shun wool and ask Australia's minister for agriculture, Tony Burke, to act right away.

  • Eight Reasons to Vote for Pamela Anderson

    Written by PETA

    Pamela Anderson

If you've been watching Dancing With the Stars (DWTS), you already know that Pamela Anderson's got the moves, but it's what she does for animals that moves us. Here's what you can do to help Pam snag that cool disco-ball trophy: Call 1-800-868-3411; text the word "vote" to 3411; or go online and vote for Pam eight times.

Here are the top eight reasons to get everyone you know (yes, even people who have never seen the show) to give their eight online votes to Pam tonight:

    • She helps the homeless. Putting the "giving" back into Thanksgiving, everyone was thankful when she dished out plates of faux turkey at a homeless shelter in Las Vegas.
    • She narrated a KFC exposé video. If you think her DWTS outfits are revealing, just check out this "behind the bucket" look at KFC cruelty.
    • "Her milkshake brings all the boys to the yard ...." Now she's brought her very own vegan delight to West Hollywood's Millions of Milkshakes.
    • She dances for bulls. Turning a paso doble into an opportunity to speak out against bullfighting? Muy cool.
    • She fights for seals. She's not afraid to rumba, but she's also not afraid to rumble with Canada's prime minister or to strike a pose to help "stamp" out the annual seal slaughter.
    • She'll jump through hoops to fight against the abuse of animals in entertainment. Pam urged Chile's prez to ban animal circuses.
    • "Cruelty doesn't fly" with Pam. Playing a bad cop for a good cause in a sexy anti-skins video—need I say more?
    • She axed an Axe endorsement deal. Blinding bunnies for a noxious body spray? Pamela knows that animal testing stinks.

BTW—DWTS is on at 8 p.m. tonight. Isn't eight great? Call everyone you know and have them call in to help Pam win!

  • New Day for Dogs in New Hampshire

    Greyhound

Break out your victory dance because lawmakers in New Hampshire have voted to ban dog racing! Once the Governor signs the bill into law greyhounds in the Granite State will be spared the stone-cold cruelty of broken legs, long hours in cramped kennels, heatstroke, and heart attacks and of being abandoned, starved, shot, or sold to laboratories when they are no longer able to run.

BTW—the word on the street is that Rhode Island will soon follow suit. We'll keep you posted. In the meantime, please urge the remaining states that still allow greyhounds to be exploited for profit and amusement to ditch dog racing.

  • Pet-Store Owner Busted Over Ghostly Find

    Written by PETA

    dead mouse

PETA's Cruelty Investigations Department is pushing hard to ensure that, if he is convicted, a West Virginia pet-store owner currently facing felony cruelty-to-animals charges never gets within arm's reach of an animal again.

Authorities reportedly found lots of dead animals, including kittens, a dog, a reptile, mice, and rats, during a search of 27-year-old Aaron Ashley's Pets Plus store in Fairmont, West Virginia, on February 9. Ashley allegedly chose to kill them via hypothermia when they got sick! He is also accused of starving animals and knowingly selling puppies infected with parvovirus, which is often deadly.

How many more examples does anyone need of the disgusting practices that are being unearthed in the backrooms at pet stores and animal dealers: Animals are bashed against floors and walls, stomped on, drowned, put into the freezer alive, and denied food, water, and even basic medical treatment for illness and injury. In 2008, a PETA undercover investigator videotaped a Fairfax, Virginia, Petland employee scooping live rat pups into a plastic bag and slowly freezing them to death. And at U.S. Global Exotics in Arlington, Texas, a few months ago, PETA's undercover investigator found that employees killed hundreds of sick, injured, and dying animals the same way.

And while this lot turns a buck churning out more animals, millions of dogs and cats die in animal shelters for lack of a good home. Please fight this cruelty by never buying anything from stores that sell animals, always adopting animals from shelters, and opening other people's eyes.

  • PETA Puts Out the Un-Welcome Mat for Ringling

    Written by PETA

Notorious animal abusers might rethink a visit to Norfolk, Virginia—home of the world's largest animal rights organization (PETA!). When Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus rolls its elephant-beating act into town, our Norfolk office holds a lively and unmissable protest to make it known that the animal circus isn't welcome here—or anywhere! Check out yesterday's great turnout from PETA's opening-night demo. We'll be at every show to cheer the plummeting attendance figures. Please take a second to speak up for the animals who suffer for the saddest show on earth by urging the USDA to revoke Ringling's exhibitor license.

    American Dragon

Um, no—but I can tell you that whatever it is, it's vegan. A toned testimonial to the power of tofu, up-and-coming World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star Daniel Bryan (aka "The American Dragon") depends on his vegan diet to keep him fit and in perfect "flying clothesline" form. To summarize: Vegan diet + athlete = recipe for wrestling success. Speaking of recipes—how about giving meat and dairy the smack-down and snacking down some tasty vegan eats instead? Your body will thank you.

  • Vegan? There's an App for That

    Written by PETA

We've told you about some of the best iPhone apps for animals, such as guides to cruelty-free shopping and vegetarian dining. Now there's an app for those times when you just don't feel like speaking "vegan-ese" to your nonvegan friends: the vegan soundboard from quarrygirl.com. And the bonus? It's free!

Some of these vegan sound bites are simultaneously hilarious and embarrassing—it's good to know, for example, that just by pushing a "button" I can let people know about my obsessions with the PPK and the vegan mecca that is Portland (there's a vegan mini-mall, for goodness' sake!). But I shudder to think that I've ever demanded, "Do you have a separate fryer for your French fries?" (Seriously. Don't be that guy.)

iPhone devotees can download the app for free. For those of you who still carry flip phones, no worries. You can still play with the soundboard here.

If you were going to create your own vegan soundboard, what would you put on it?

  • The Top 5 iPhone Apps for Animals

    Written by PETA

The following is a guest post from peta2's Lara.

The iPhone has paved the way for smart phones, making information, communication and entertainment available at your fingertips. But did you know that the iPhone can also help animals?

Check out the best iPhone apps for animals below:

    1. VegOut app
BNB (Be Nice to Bunnies) ($1.99): This app makes cruelty-free shopping easier than ever by breaking down your options by category, company, and product. Did I mention that 15 percent of the proceeds get donated to PETA?
    2. VegOut Vegetarian Restaurant Guide ($2.99): I use this app almost every weekend. Powered by HappyCow.net, VegOut uses iPhone's GPS to home in on restaurants that serve vegetarian eats close to your location. It also links to reviews of the restaurants. Definitely worth the $2.99 investment.
    3. Vegetarian Cookbook ($0.99): Consult the Vegetarian Cookbook app if you need help deciding what to make for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This mobile cookbook includes a wide array of categories, including American, Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Thai, Dessert, and Gourmet. It also comes in handy as a grocery list while shopping for ingredients.
    4. VeganXpress Menu and Shopping Assistance ($1.99): If you are going on a road trip, you need this app! VeganXpress is a guide to vegan menu and shopping options at popular chain restaurants and fast-food places. Need to know what a vegan can eat at Denny's? Want to find out which gas station snacks are vegan? Need to find a restaurant that your Aunt Edna will love? Look no further.
    5. Veggie Passport ($0.99): If you're traveling outside the country and you don't know the language, you don't want to end up ordering meat by mistake. Be prepared with Veggie Passport. Express your animal-free food needs in 33 languages! "Mimi ni mlaji wa mboga za majani tu" means "I am a vegetarian" in Swahili.

What's your favorite or least favorite iPhone app? (My least fave is Deer Hunter 3D.) Let me know in a comment below.
