• Hanukkah Gifts for Everyone on Your List

    Written by Paula Moore

Hanukkah is almost here, and you know what that means: good food, festive gatherings with family and friends … and eight days of presents! PETA's animal-friendly gift ideas will keep you going for all eight days of Hanukkah celebrations:

    • I Have a Little Dreidel: I made it out of … marshmallows? Sweet & Sara's chocolate-dipped vegan marshmallows in three festive shapes—the Star of David, a dreidel, and a menorah—will have everyone singing "The Dreidel Song."
    • Jelly Doughnuts Redux: With 250 recipes, Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero's Veganomicon is the only cookbook that you'll ever need. Whip up a batch of their Jelly Donut Cupcakes for a modern twist on the Hanukkah potluck favorite: jelly doughnuts.
    • A Scentsational Gift: Bring a smile to your sweetie's face with A Scent of Scandal's holiday-themed soy candles in tongue-in-cheek scents such as Challahback Girl (challah bread) and Hanukkah Bush (fir tree).
    • Not Your Bubbe's Fur: A luxe, looks-like-the-real-thing faux-fur scarf or hat will keep your loved ones cozy and cruelty-free all winter long.
    • Tee Time: From PETA's "Test Tubes, Not Bunnies" T-shirt to this clever "veggie menorah" design (featuring pea pods, carrots, and red peppers in place of candles), there are countless ways to get animal-friendly messages out there—and look great doing it!
    • Gifts for Four-Legged Friends: Don't forget to wish your animal friends a happy Hanukkah, too, with PETA's cat and dog gift sets.
    • Gifts for All Animal Lovers: Spread some cheer (and compassion) by choosing a "virtual gift"—such as a toy for a neglected dog or a spay or neuter surgery—at PETAPresents.org. PETA will send your recipient a beautiful e-card thanking him or her for helping animals.

  • Parliament's Fur Robes Are Royally Ugly

    Written by PETA

Baroness Lola Young wants the U.K.'s House of Lords to elect faux fur to Parliament. The baroness led a debate in the House of Lords last week to ask Her Majesty's government what plans it has to support and promote ethical and sustainable clothing.

Prior to the debate, PETA U.K. shared with the baroness information about the fur industry and noted that the overwhelming majority of Britons are opposed to real fur—95 percent according to a 2010 poll. Pointing out that, as representatives of the British people, peers should reflect their values, the baroness urged her fellow peers to abandon ceremonial robes trimmed with ermine or rabbit fur and opt for faux fur instead.

Stateside, PETA's campaign against the royally cruel Donna Karan is still going strong. If you haven't already, please let the Bunny Butcher know that you won't buy DKNY while bunnies die.

    Oprah

Here's one more reason why I heart Oprah.

Yesterday, during her fall fashion style makeover show, a stylist mentioned that a furry vest worn in one woman's "after" look was faux. Oprah replied, "I was a PETA Woman of the Year so I hope that's faux!"

From celebrating vegan cuisine with Chef Tal Ronnen to airing an in-depth investigation of the cruelty of puppy mills, Oprah never hesitates to remind millions of television viewers to consider animals in their everyday lives.

In the three years since Paris Hilton had a bouquet of flours (millet and plain baking) tossed at her—sorry, on her—by an animal rights activist, she's come a long way. But, like some others who have graced PETA's annual "Worst Dressed" list, Paris has gotten the message about the cruelty of the fur industry and now proudly proclaims her fur-free stance. For real! Even her mom is on board with the compassionate clothing thing:

"Nicky wanted me to get her this photograph. It is of a beautiful swan because she loves swans, so I got her that. And Paris, I am going to get her a very cool faux fur coat. Like a bomber jacket."

—Kathy Hilton, discussing Paris' faux-fur Christmas present

    Bravo, Paris!

Based on these results, Lindsay Lohan's mom can expect a fabulous faux to show up on LiLo's wish list in the near future.
