According to a statement on its website, athletic behemoth Adidas has sworn off the skins of exotic animals—including crocodiles, snakes, sharks, and fish—joining compassionate companies such as Nike and Cole Haan, H&M, Overstock.com, and Victoria's Secret that rock the mock croc. Adidas also refuses to use fur or wool from sheep who were mulesed in any of its shoes or clothing. 
 

Like many animals used for their skin, snakes are often skinned alive, sometimes after being nailed to a tree.

 
We applaud Adidas for making great strides for so many animals, and look forward to the day when all its footwear is faux.

Here's some good news for lambs: Women's clothing retailer Talbots has pledged to phase out the use of merino wool from farmers who perform the mulesing mutilation (that is, they hack chunks of flesh from lambs' backsides with instruments resembling gardening shears, or they use clamps to squeeze the animals' skin so tightly that the flesh rots off). Talbots has committed to increasing the amount of wool from non-mulesed lambs every year until it completely eliminates wool from mulesed lambs in its products!

With an ever-growing list of retailers—including Gap Inc., H&M, Liz Claiborne, Perry Ellis, Hugo Boss, and Next—taking a stand against mulesing, it looks like the wool industry's cruelty to lambs is coming back to bite it in the rear. We can take a stand against mulesing, too, by putting cozy, cruelty-free clothes on our holiday wish lists.

H&M is an industry leader in all things stylish and cruelty-free—which is why we were thrilled to announce that, because of its recent decision to implement a permanent policy against selling any exotic skins, including those of snakes, alligators, crocodiles, lizards, ostriches, and other animals, H&M is the recipient of our Company of the Year Proggy Award. H&M's announcement to no longer sell exotic skins came after we sent a copy of our new exposé to the universally loved retailer. (Seriously, H&M is like apparel candy: affordable and deliciously fashionable, and I don't know anyone who doesn't love them.)

Many animals who are stripped of their skin for fashion are skinned alive and then tossed onto a pile where they writhe in pain until they succumb to shock or dehydration. Some animals live in agony for up to four days after they lose their flesh. H&M's new policy sends the message that kindness is always chic. Follow this company's lead: Take our pledge and declare that the only skin you'll ever wear is your own.
