New York Port Authority Slaughtering Geese

Thank you, PETA for your prompt action on this terrible massacre. Geese represent SO little threat to humans. Because so many of them breed in the remote arctic, the Canada geese populations have not plummeted as have other bird species. Because these lovely geese continue to be plentiful, people feel they can abuse and kill them for aesthetic reasons or because they're interfering with a ball game. It's shocking! Geese have become a huge problem, not just for air travel but a general nuisance. Around local lakes and ponds these birds take over and ruin the water and foliage on the banks, leading to erosion and loss of entire stock of fish (a food source for the birds and for us). I don't think killing a few hundred or a few thousand could make a dent in the population. One town has brought back the "turkey shoot" competition except it is for geese that plague local ponds and public areas. Have to say the idea works and for once we can swim and fish the waters again. Don’t torture animals, but be smart and put them to good use- feeding the hungry sounds like a great place to start.

The GEESE PEACE protocol(www.geesepeace.org) absolutely WORKS!!!! VERY briefly, for targeted areas:(1)NO FEEDING PERIOD (something I see NY violating on every newscast on this topic!),(2) egg addling (3) no harassment during nesting season (4) humane harassment (they suggest border collies, other techniques work too if applied persistently, consistently and thoroughly) from May 15th, end of nesting season, until the molt is well underway. You must "win" at every session, getting the birds to leave the water and leave the area. The Geese Peace protocol was designed by an engineer to meet the needs of his own community and solve their resident geese problem without using lethal methods. IT WORKS!!! It is based on principles of geese behavior and effectively teaches the birds to stay out of areas where you don't want them to be, while reducing the population. (NJ wildlife officials are acknowledging too that egg addling, adopted by many communities has had a significant impact on NJ's population of resident Canada Geese!) We've used this approach in my town for 5 years and we have the statistics to prove that it works.("Round up and kill" just frees up ideal geese habitat for "untrained" newcomers to move in. Geese peace "teaches" the resident birds to stay away from the area where they are not welcome. ) As with many humane solutions, you first have to WANT to find them and you have to WANT to make them work!!(PS.Our observations have been that birds, on occasion, in areas heavily addled over a number of years WILL adopt surprising family/nesting strategies in an effort , I believe, to replenish their populaton. That does not prevent continued use of egg addling as a humane and effective tool for population reduction.)

This is so heartbreaking!! These geese should NOT be slaughtered!! Please NYC do NOT do this!
