The survey about people preferring pets to children, especially older dogs, is very interesting. I don't think the results had much to do with the age of those responding. I was in my twenties when I decided not to have children. When I married for the first and only time in my forties, I re-evaluated my feelings when I realized adoption was an option, and I still decided to remain childless. I do like children, I was a nanny and a preschool teacher for most of my adult life; it's just that I am more useful to the people of the world if there are no children at home to worry about. I do have a dog I adopted from a shelter when he was around 18 months old; he just celebrated his 10th birthday in December. We also have 2 lovebirds and I am caring for 2 abandoned, feral cats. Between us, my husband and I have 2 nephews (nephew number 3 is due in May) 4 nieces, and I have lost count of the number of godchildren, so there are children in our lives. In the past I have also supported children through World Vision. My point is, you do not need to be a parent to have a positive influence on children.
