Amanda, PETA supports additional measures to safeguard horses from abandonment and neglect, including specifically making horse abandonment a crime with stiff penalties on a state-by-state level, as Oregon is currently considering; requiring people who can no longer care for their horses to find new homes for them or have them euthanized by injection; and putting into place funding and special enforcement to prevent unscrupulous individuals from smuggling horses out of the U.S. under false pretenses. Please help us urge legislators to pass the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act (S. 311/H.R. 503). H.R. 503 would make it a crime to possess, ship, transport, purchase, sell, deliver, or receive horses or horse flesh for human consumption.
