Letting our animal companions wander the mean streets is careless and dangerous at any time of year, but that's especially true around Halloween, and even more so if the animal is a black cat. But some people seem to be in extreme denial about the perils that Halloween poses for ebony-colored felines.
Take the Sowards family of Florida. According to a newspaper article, the family let their black cat, Jinxy Boo, outdoors in the late afternoon on Halloween. The next morning, Jinxy Boo showed up on their patio with injuries so severe that she had to be euthanized. A veterinarian suspects that someone may have placed a firecracker in Jinxy Boo's rectum and exploded it.
That's appalling, but get this: According to the article, Jinxy Boo is the third cat the Sowards have lost around Halloween. The third cat! Apparently, the family got her to replace their previous black cat who disappeared on Halloween.
There is no excuse for abusing animals, and anyone who does so is probably a serial killer in training, but if we let our cats or dogs outdoors alone, we are effectively handing our companions over to animal torturers with a sign around their neck that says, "I'm all yours!" Let's promise not to let our beloved animals end up like Jinxy Boo: allow them outdoors only on closely supervised excursions.

Little jinx will be with god today in paradise ;( another loss of beauty from this world, a gain to the next. When finally this world has been drained of light and beauty what is left will be destroyed. The demons who did this will be left, jinxy will live.
If you see an animal being abused at any time, but especially Halloween, REPORT THE ABUSER!! No one needs "friends" like that! If you hear someone boasting about abusing an animal, report what you have heard. The police may not be able to do anything, but they will now have a complaint registered against that person that will help get them arrested the next time they abuse.
Anyone who abuses an animal should be put in a public forum and whipped, then maybe our children will see consequences to their actions, come on ADULTS,stsrt showing up and doing something with your freaky kids who have No disipline! Its starts at HOME!!!!!!
This is a comment to Margaret. Do you honestly think indoor cats are imprisoned? They are perfectly happy and safe!If you let an animal outside to "wander" and they get hurt...you might as well have hurt them yourself.
This is a terrible thing that happened to their cat and yes they should of learned their lesson and kept her inside but to say if you let your cats out you are an irresponsible owner i think is wrong,i have 12 cats all rescued they go inand out when they want and no harm has ever come to them, and to say a cat lives longer kept indoors well my eldest died at the ripe old age of 21 and she went outside. Maybe in USA you have different views but in the UK cats go outside thats what they are used to thats how they learn and explore life, and if you are a responsible loving cat owner they never wander far anyway. I couldnt imagine being locked indoors everyday all my life.
I just cannot understand how someone could do something like this, it angers and upsets me so much, but I do know this. After the person that did this dies they will have to experience it from the cats point of view. Not trying to push my beliefs on anyone, but research into near death experiences shows that people have what is called a life review. And in the review a person not only lives their life over, but they feel all the affects that they had on any other being that they interacted with. One day whoever did this horrific act is going to have to feel what this cat felt. Not only this, but this person will have to feel what the cats care takers felt, and what everyone else in the world felt upon learning of this. All the people in the world that are cruel to animals are in for a rude awakening. And they will be sorry.
I have a Black named Sabara and ever since he was a kitten I never let him go outdoors.Halloween or not.None of my animals were ever allowed to be by themselves ...Yes!it's true about Black and Halloween
there's a old wise tale about black cats and halloween. They say that just before All Hallows Eve
the witches come out before midnight and hunt down all black cats.. Yes it's sad and i feel for the owners. But I hve to say to the owners who lost their cat 3 of their cats go missing. Lesson learned.RIP Jinxy Boo!
Dottie this says it best i agree with you well said !
if you cant keep your cat inside and safe then you shouldnt have a cat at all !
this is so horrible - people please wake up and just keep your cats indoors or if you let them out stay with them outside until you get them in again ! where i live people let their cats run every where and eventually something bad will happen ! this family is in my prayers - but my gosh when will they learn ?
I have 2 black cats in my life and I have always kept them in on and around Halloween because of the horror stories I have heard about. Now my little Zoe is always in and that's the way it always should have been
