At a press conference yesterday, Life as We Know It star and PETA T-shirt fan Katherine Heigl announced that she would be donating $1 million to fund low-cost and no-cost spay-and-neuter programs in Los Angeles and surrounding communities. The donation is part of the new "Compassion Revolution" campaign, which aims to combat companion-animal overpopulation by promoting spaying and neutering and encouraging people to adopt homeless animals instead of buying dogs and cats from pet stores.
In California alone, more than 800,000 animals end up in shelters every year. Approximately 500,000 of these animals must be euthanized, costing taxpayers $250 million annually. "What's happening is not only inhumane and morally reprehensible, it's economically irresponsible," Heigl told The Hollywood Reporter. "Most people are unaware of what's happening. We can start to change the existing paradigm."
You bet we can! PETA is doing its part with its SNIP (Spay and Neuter Immediately, Please!) mobile veterinary clinic, which operates seven days a week and recently celebrated its 57,000th sterilization surgery.

How exemplary of her!
Knew I liked this girl. Yes stop the pet shops but also do we need a plan for those that didn't neuter and their companions did have puppies, kittens?? Free to good homes often ups up with pups being picked by people who onsell them to research labs. Can we get that out there? Lastly many people believe still that their dog or cat should have a litter. And the reasons will never be voiced because they are along the lines of 'fullfillment', 'maturity' etc..and while the message is out there to not contribute we need to challenge these beliefs. Cheers Alex
may GOD bless beautiful Katherine Heigl! she is an angel on earth! and may GOD bless PETA on her 30th anniversary! i imagine all these shining stars who prepared and are ready to shine for the Glory of Peta! i drink a toast to you PETA for all you have done, you are doing and you shall do for our brothers the animals! i cannot participate with money for the moment because i rescued a dog and three cats - one of them was just three weeks in the hospital and i'm an old poor woman but i pray for you all this evening and i'm sure that my prayers will reach to the stars and beyond - to GOD - the creator of all living beings - who loves all HIS creation within HIS VERY HEART!!!!!!!!!!!!! a la vida! alla vita! le chaim! aufs Leben! Ă la vie! to the life! ad vita eterna!
That's great, but the head of animal control now in Los Angeles is a woman who advocated FOR puppy mills as an AKC breeder and lobbyist. She wants to help the breeders and puppy mills breed more and push more animals into the shelters. She also has pushed people to buy from breeders, not adopt. Until there's some real humane leadership and enforcement in LA animal control, and not just a lobbyist from the AKC puppy mill industry, it's a losing battle.
I adore Katherine Heigl, and this is just one more reason to love her! ^_^ GO KAT!!!!
Excellent!
