Good 'Mews' for Renters' Animals

Woot, woot—or should I say "woof, woof"?—to the California Assembly for passing a bill last week that would make it illegal for landlords to require tenants to declaw or devocalize their animal companions.

A place that requires its residents to amputate their family members' toes or cut out their vocal cords sounds more like a detainment facility than "home sweet home." But, some properties require renters to put their animal companions through these painful, debilitating, and unnecessary procedures. Let's hope that this bill clears all the remaining hurdles and gets written into law soon. Its next stop is the California Senate—so, Golden State residents, please urge your senator to save animals' toes and throats by supporting AB 2743!

I never heard about devocalization before I read about it on peta.org a few weeks ago I am from Germany. To be sure I still can't believe that people actually do that. I can't emphasise enough how absurd this seems to me. And to be honest I am shocked that something like that is even legal. They used to cut the tails and ears of doberman in Germany too. They forbid that a few years ago because it is an unnecessary cruelness. No intrusion for "beauty" reasons is allowed anymore. Which in my opinion is a good thing. You don't cut your babies ears or fingers if you don't like the way it came out do you?

first who would do this to their animals and second who would do it just because the landlord is asking them to do !!! this is crazy i will move the hell out before i will do these thing to my beautiful animals!! this is so stupid!! people are so stupid sometimes !!!

Joanna this bill won't force landlords to stop renting to pets. It means that humane methods for managing scratching nail trimming Soft Paws scratch pads and barking training exercise stimulation will be forced to be used. Look at the big picture here cosmetic convenience surgeries for pets are becoming outdated as humans become awareness of the unnecessary pain suffering involved as well as the lifetime consequences. So it's time for all parties involved in perpetuating these atrocities vets landlords etc to promote the simple kind alternatives.

Bobbie when it is a choice between living in a nopet apartment or at least being able to give an animal a home. I choose the latter. Like I said the time this choice occured I got a cat that was already declawed She's four!

An owner or management company should never have the right to tell someone that they have to mutilate their pets in order for the person to be allowed to rent the property. That's insane. Renters myself included must be more vigilant in paying attention to how our pets act and do the very best we can to remedy the situation. There is also the problem of nosy neighbors who think they should tell you how to handle your pets. It is the pets parent's job to keep them safe quiet warm and fed and loved beyond all reason. However the pet is also allowed to be free to "speak" when they wish but don't disturb everyone outside your own hom and use those claws to scratch those scratching posts as it is part of their nature part of their "being". I think owners should provide renter's insurance that also covers your beloved babies animals. Lastly...Get off the Idea that Animals don't feel pain love loss guilt joy their live being pulled from them and many other emotions when the owner home owner is having the animals throat ripped out and the claws pulled out at the knuckle all without anesthetic. I say it should first be tested on the inmate population to see what their reaction is. How about that test run boys!

How does it benefit pet owners if the landlords simply say no pets becuase they think the animals are going t obark or damage the property? The shelter is full of animals becuase the family is moving and cannot get a place that takes the animals. Unless its illegal to discriminate against a pet owner it seems like this bill just makes it harder to find a place to rent that takes a pet.

if i lived somewhere that told me i had to declaw or devocalize my pet i wouldn't live there. anyone who would oblige to that request should not be a pet owner!

I often disagree with PETA but I am firmly with you guys on this one. This law needs to be passed everywhere. Any apartment I have lived in that required cats to be declawed I just rescued a cat that was already declawed.

HA if a landlord asked me to devocalize my pet I would say how about you remove your eardrum
