There may not be many seals in the Sunshine State, but any who do venture that far south have a friend in U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings. The senior Democratic whip is lobbing a virtual pie in the face of the Canadian government by introducing a resolution this week urging our neighbors to the north to ban the commercial seal slaughter.
Seal fur and other spoils of the slaughter are already banned in the U.S., and the Senate passed a similar resolution last year condemning Canada's annual baby seal massacre—but this is a first for the House.
Why not add your voice to Rep. Hastings' by urging Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to make like a snowbird and retire the seal slaughter? (And don't forget to spread the word to your friends and family too.)

Re: Tara. Sadly, the Canadian government is NOT honest about economics behind the seal hunt. The commercial seal slaughter, which accounts for 97 percent of seals killed each year, is not a subsistence trade but rather an extreme example of government waste. Canada spends more than C$7 million in taxpayer money every year subsidizing the massacre through Coast Guard support, pro-sealing campaigns, and travel. The country also spends incalculable millions on additional research and market development in behalf of the industry. Profit from the slaughter barely exceeded C$1 million in 2009.Canada hemorrhages untold millions of dollars year after year to keep the dying seal fur industry afloat instead of helping sealers find other ways to supplement their income. To learn more about this massacre, and to see for yourself why death by hikapik is shockingly cruel, please visit: http://www.canadasshame.com.
Caria. Grow up sweetheart.
I think it's unfortunate that you're all putting the welfare of animals that, lets face it, probually wont servive the year, above the humans that survive because of this. These are people with families that depend on them, these are people that live, breathe, laugh, cry, and stress out, just like you.
I also think it's sad that amaricans can't trust their government, so they assume we can't trust ours. The canadian government is very open about it's plans regarding the seal hunt, and other hunts infact. This is a very sustainable industry, and the animals feel very little, or no pain.
The hikapik is a very humane tool, and is consittered by most veterans to be the most humane and quickest methode of killing the seal. "Blunt force trauma to the head"
I'd like to draw your attention to heart valves, please do envest some time to educate yourselves on the potential of using their heartvalves in open heart surgery.
Shame on this organisation for putting thousands of people out of work.
