Three Arrested in D.C. Seal Slaughter Protest

This morning, when Prime Minister Stephen Harper met with President Obama at the Canadian Embassy in D.C., he got a welcome that I'm sure he won't forget any time soon.

Three "seals" covered with red paint writhed on the ground to illustrate what happens to hundreds of thousands of harp seals in Canada.

Fifteen other demonstrators held up stop signs reading, "Harper: Stop the Seal Slaughter."

With D.C. traffic already backed up, the cops weren't thrilled with the additional congestion.

Luckily, the officers weren't armed with hakapiks.

If Prime Minister Harper wants a warmer welcome next time, the first thing that he should do is stop the annual seal slaughter.

I think that you need to read the First Amendments before blindly saying that they were arrested for protesting. They are given the right to free speech freedom to assemble freedom to petition and freedom of the press. They would not have been arrested if they were rolling on the grass and not in traffic.

i agree with bluebell how is it legal to club seals but illegal to protest against the cruelty it just shows how blind some people really are!!!!!!

BRAVO!! this slaughter is shameful Mr. Harper end it if you don't like the way the world views you. this is great coverage it was peaceful enough the protesters hurt no one the seals are tortured to death in this killing so if the protest gets a little ugly good for those brave ones!

For those wondering the seals were not arrested for their protesting they were arrested for blocking traffic. You'll probably say "well it's their right to protest" yes... but you have the right to "peacefully protest" which means you can't cause a roadblock. Plus seriously is this worth the lives of yourselves causing pain for your family and friends for seals who you may never get to meet? If it is then I sincerely pray for you and the nation because you are being selfish. BTW I don't condone the seal hunt as I hate animals being killed just for their fur or headantlers. That said I don't think someone should be risking their own lives for it as well as those in a car. Seriously this time you got VERY Lucky given D.C.'s traffic that no one died.

Good job! We should all be backing these protesters! I hope none of them were hurt. The law can be pretty rough sometimes in taking people away. Keep up the good work!

I think the protestors were arrested for blocking traffic rather than protesting the seal slaughter however I know from experience that blocking traffic is sometimes the only way to get the attention of the public. I once participated in a protest for a group called "Worthy Wage" which is dedicated to trying to get better wages for daycare workers and teachers. We got attention and news coverage by completely blocking the main throughfare into our city on a busy weekday morning. Nobody went to jail but we all got cited I think the police were afraid we'd riot which we had no intention of doing...our group believed in passive resistance. We got television news coverage and that was the main thing.

Well done! Fantastic costumes although you might want to put some grey on there to signify a moulting pup. You know how those tiresome prosealing people like to point out that whitecoats aren't killed anymore while ignoring the fact that those very whitecoats die the moment they lose their first white hair. Well done and thanks for what you're doing!
