Oh, Canada, It's Your Birthday

Canada is celebrating its birthday today, and people around the globe just don't think it's fair. The country that kills hundreds of thousands of seals each year, most of whom haven't even seen their first birthday, gets to throw a big shindig? No way, hoser.

To let Canada know that the rest of the world will not be celebrating in honor of anything Canadian until the seal slaughter ends, people gathered today at Canadian consulates and embassies for demonstrations. They even protested at parades. Check it out:

If Canada is your "home and native land," take a minute and sign our Facebook petition, tweet at Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and send an e-mail to the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee. Let your fellow Canadians know that the seal slaughter must end.

Oh hey there In my short life I have never eaten seal meat nor worn any seal products. I am not only a Canadian but a citizen of Newfoundland and Labrador. I 100 support the seal hunt. Outport communities need this to supplement their living especially with the cod fishery in the plight it's in now. It's not only to feed families but also to scrape up enough money so that maybe next year won't be so rough. IT IS ILLEGAL TO HUNT BABY SEALS. The animals themselves are eating themselves out of house and home and soon theyll have to migrate or starve. So I ask of you not to criticize Canada or even sealhunt supporters. Dont ask that we ban a great Canadian and traditional lifestyle but perhaps a consensus between us can be reached? Maybe instead of erasing something that certain families need to get by we can work out a way to make everyone happy? I understand how you feel and how adverts can affect us. But I also want you all to understand that there are two sides to every story this is ours.

I'm Canadian and I don't support this. The only people that support this are the ones that WEAR the fur and kill the seals. Seriously I don't see how hating all of us is going to help with not killing seals. And also depriving Canada of it's main resource and making it rely on killing seals isn't going to help much because tthose who wear fur now probaly will wear it later.

Are there really people arguing about who abuses animals more on this website??? Im nauseas from reading this. Who cares where the animal abuse is you must all be seriously diluted to think any one nation state or city is responsible for all of the animal abuse. I cant believe anyone no matter how small their mind would waste their time on such bs. The bottom line is no matter where its happening its disgusting. Focus your time and effort into doing something constructive for the animals rather than defending yourselves. I dont care who is vegan or who is from where. Get a life!

Oh carla you and a few others Brad Angela seem to be the ones singling out Canada for animal abuse and yet you get upset when someone singles out America for animal abuse.

Sheri many americans protest animal abuse everyday! Don't single out the united states for animal abuse. Every country is guilty of it. EVERY COUNTRY INCLUDING CANADA!

Thank you Meg for your enlightened second post. Sensational stuff. I couldn't really care for the first one. I should also point out to some of you at PETA Brad Angela who believe that ALL Canadians are for the slaughter let me point out for the ZILLIONTH time that SO FEW Canadians support it. MOST Canadians want it to end. Clear now? Good. Now that I've cleared that up I have another idea. Meg mentioned Canada's healthcare system which inspired me to come up with the protest banner of the very real possibility that seal clubbing causes clinical depression in many Canadians owing to them being treated as cashcows their best efforts letter writing protesting sending letters to their local senator only to have it deleted bearing no fruit etc. People on petitions have said that seal clubbing makes them "depressed" one Canadian said something about "the emotional states of many Canadians are affected by this obscene ritual" and let's face it seal clubbing is a significant trigger for the black dog. Something to think about.
