PETA to Advertisers: Ax the AKC

You guys remember how the BBC dropped coverage of Crufts, the UK's big dog show, right? After that, we asked USA Network to do the decent thing and follow suit by refusing to air the American Kennel Club's Westminster Dog Show.

Well, it seems that USA is determined to wring a few bucks out of the suffering and illness of dogs and will be airing Westminster as planned.

OK, USA, if that's the way you want to play it, we're not above doing an end run and going directly to your oxygen supply. That's right—we've written to USA's Westminster sponsors (LifeLock, TransUnion, Intuit, the CityKids Foundation, the Flex Belt, and Pedigree) and asked them to withdraw their support. Read our letter here.

We obviously can't count on either USA or the AKC to put honor before profit, but we hope that there are still a few businesses out there that will step up and help make a difference for dogs.

As well as taking part in active communication with these groups and attempting to get their attention there is other help that is desperately needed. Adopt an animal from any of the highkill shelters in your area. Go to petfinders.com or dogsindanger.com on the internet or visit a city pound or county shelter and take home one of the animals in need many of whom started their sad lives in puppy mills. Refuse to purchase a pet in any pet store or from a breeder. Save a life. If it is not possible to bring an adopted pet into your life please volunteer to help rescue organizations find loving homes for animals currently in pounds awaiting death. Every life counts. Thank you.

I agree with Rex's Mom in that PETA needs to get on Animal Planet if you don't like televised dog shows being sponsored by dog food companies. Also 100 agree with Valerie on PETA getting in Animal Planet's face on "Jockeys". If the promo will use footage of horses going down I rather doubt the show will spare the viewer more of it. And if PETA won't do it then I hope individuals will rally and get others to write AP. As to allergies I found and recommend Dr. Alfred J. Plechner's books Pet Allergies and Pets at Risk. His ideas have proven very helpful for my allergy problem dogs while giving much insight into the why behind it. tata

Hi Joanna Guess what my current dog's favorite food is? Green beans. We mix that in with a cupful of nonwheat based dog food and he inhales it. He has a beautful thick shiny black coat that everyone compliments him on. Buck gets misidentified as a purebred Flat Coated retriever all of the time...and I am happy to point out that he is a Border CollieBlack Lab mix. No webbed footing such as Flat Coated retrievers have.

Rev Meg Your dogs skin problems sound like the results of feeding the dog commercial dog food that has grain or other common poor quality ingredients. Most commercial dog food including Pedigree is just poison for dogs and leads to all types of health issues. Had you been feeding the dog a diet of protien and vegatables with no grain and no garbage it likely would have lived a happy and healthy life. Food allergies and premature cancer affect many dogs of all breeding. Consummers should be aware that corporate america is trying to steal all their money anyway they can. They are more than happy to make you and your pets sick with junk food and then sell you pharmacuticals to treat your symtoms.

Animal Planet also debut a new show this Friday called "Jockeys". I doubt that the suffering and cruelty inherent in horse racing will be featured. The promos show many horses falling on the track but we are supposed to feel sorry for the jockeys who are so "brave??" Well the horses are exploited and don't have a choice. PETA please write Animal Planet one of your pithy letters.

You know that company LifeLock? The identity theft protection company where the prsident puts his social security number on public signs and trucks? Well apparently that scumbag isn't concerned about the fact that a high percentage of AKC registrations are FALSIFIED "fake id." The AKC doesn't even check the accuracy of its registrations. When I was growing up my family had two purebreds a standard poodle and a yorkshire terrier. Neither were show quality for these reasons The poodle was brain damaged after a bout with distemper which he had before we adopted him and which my parents were not told about until they took him to the vet who had treated him for the distemper. Knowing he would probably be destroyed if they returned him they opted to keep him. He led a comfortable life with us until he passed away at age 14. The yorkshire terrier had horrible skin problems all of his life and we had to have him euthanized when I was in high school. We adopted him when I was six and I was heartbroken. My parents applied for AKC papers and received an apologetic letter stating there were no champions in his line big surprize but we loved him anyway. I don't know how much money and time my mom spent on his skin but it was probably thousands of dollars and when I was in sixth grade I pounded another girl into the pavement for teasing my little dog. The dog I have now is Border CollieBlack Lab mix and is wonderfully healthy praise God! And he is also neutered. The message purebreds more often than not have hearbreaking physical problems and while mixes can have them also there is a lot to be said for "hybrid vigor." But please always neuter or spay them.

Why not post the adress so people can send they're own letters? If its one thing the Parents Television Council shows its that if everyone in an organization sends one letter showing they are displeased over what the advertisers are sponsoring they might cave. Thats just what I assume. I mean I'd accutally be more inclined to support this than the Parent's Television Council. So yeah good luck with this.

Supporting the AKC and their dog shows equals supporting PUPPY MILLS The AKC makes most of its money from puppy mill registrations. That is the blood money that pays for these dog shows etc httpwww.bogartsdaddy.comBouvierBouvPagesarticleinquirepuppymillsAKC.htm Do a google search for AKC PUPPY MILLS The AKC even has a Large Volume Breeder puppy mill committee to solicit puppy mill registrations! They have business deals with Petland and their puppy mill dog sales The AKC lobbies for puppy mill and against puppy mill regulations These "show breeders" all feed off that puppy mill suffering!

This past Saturday on Animal Planet they aired the Eukanuba dog show. Maybe you can write to Animal Planet too and ask them not to show dog shows but I dont think it will do any good.
