It's a Dog-Eat-Horse World

We all know about the horrific treatment of animals killed for human consumption, but a lot of us dog guardians haven't stopped to think about what we're feeding Fido for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Recently, a University of Florida student investigated Moses Dog Food company (based in Ocala, Florida) to find out what's in your dog's bowl. Check out the video below to see what the student discovered:

The majority of dog and cat food comes from factory farm–raised animals who failed to meet standards for human consumption, falling into one of the "Four D's" categories—dead, dying, diseased, or disabled. Does that sound like something you'd want to feed your dog?

"Four D categoriesdead dying diseased or disabled." This is a routine diet for the iCanisi genera in its natural habitat. Why would you not wan't to feed your dog its natural diet?

Well I am sure you would ask anyone prone to torturing their animals to get rid of them or have the animals removed by law enforcement. I think making a cat eat corn and soy is slow kill torture...so yes...please get rid of your cat if that's what your going to feed it. Give the cat a chance at a home that will feed it some meat. Sure I said it poorly...how about...rehome your sweet kitty with somebody able to feed it properly...is that better. That's all I meant. I am torn with my own animals becuase I do not want to support factory farms or the importation of animal products from China when I buy pet food. As a result I have to work very hard to find affordable options that meet my values. For example I cannot buy any dog or cat treat at a standard pet store. They just do not sell any food that to me is acceptable. I beleive there are many people who have gone through the transition to veganism and maybe just cannot morally buy things like cat food. These people really would be happier with a naturally vegan pet. And yes there are lots of unhomed cats but there are also many unhomed vegan pets. I was talking to a young friend who is a vegan and raw foods person. Very healthy person too. Anyway he said some of his friends practice 'freeganism'. This was a new idea to me but maybe helpful to strict vegans. He said freeganism was where you only use animal products if you can get them for free. That way you are not creating additional demand for animnal products and maybe even eliminating waste of animal products. Perhaps a strict vegan with a cat can find a source of free cat food or meat and at least live by their values without messing with the cat's diet.

dogs can clearly be fed a vegetarian diet with little or no problems cats are an unknown quantity. There is vegan cat food vegancats and evolution come to mind and it is true that cats do need a dietary source of taurine. there are no enzymes that a cat needs from meat that is a bunch of ridiculous voodoo hoodoo but due to urinary tract problems the food must be acidic and within a certian pH range. Cats do have this option.

My hat is off to this young man. This is what is needed to bring about change. In California an expose was fiomed showing diary cattle being pushed around with forklifts when they were too sick to move. This eye opener raised the conscientiousness of the general population and Prop. 2 was passed. Protesting leaflet distribution work to some degree but what is needed more than anything is proof. If you see industrial cruelty film it and expose it. What is needed now is to trace where those animals came from. Thank you again.

Joanna"Get rid of your Cat" How about you get rid of your mother or sister? I utterly agree with Phyllis. Do you really consider getting rid of a cat because they cant eat vegan? If so why dont you just take a shot gun to that cats head and kill it! That comment was so ignorant I dont consider you any better than the people we are trying to stop.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is a rendering plant not a slaughter house? When we had to put our one filly down she had contracted tendons and despite several thousand dollar surgeries to help her she had gotten to the point where she was no longer comfortable we brought her to a rendering plant. It was our hope that her earthly body could help other animals. Definitely creepy but all the animals they were dealing with arrived dead unlike a slaughter house.

Roxanne Unfortunately kitties cannot be vegans. They are true carnivores and as such require taurine in order to maintain their eyesight. Taurine is an amino acid that is only available from animal sources. If you read labels carefully you will notice that this nonvegan ingredient is present in things like Red Bull though...yuck! To the idiot who suggested that Roxanne should get rid of her cat to adopt a bird you need to consider your values. Do you really believe in veganism because it is right for animals? If so how could you ever make such an awful request?

Joanna "Get rid of the cat"? Just how do you propose she "get rid of" her family member? Throw her out to fend for herself? Abandon her in a shelter where she'll suffer in the stressful enviroment until she is killed? Or maybe find that mythical farm that always needs a barn cat...? YOU need to get a clue! Ethical people do NOT "get rid of" their family members even if they do belong to a species that needs to eat differently than you do. More cats are abandoned and killed in animal shelters than any other animal. To suggest that someone add to this misery is completely out of place on a PETA blog and makes me mad as hell!

I agree with Jenn. I have been trying to get my dogs on as healthy a diet as I can with the help of a holistic vet. It is a long ways from being vegan and in fact has none of the grain and soy based ingredients found in Vdog. It is largely a vegetable diet with lots of squash greens and a small amount of friut and then there is meat in it. No grain. After dealing with pancreatitis in my dog and solving all those complications by going grain free I am not sure I would jump on the vegan dog food program if it used grains and soy eventhough I would love to eliminate the use of farmed animals for pet food. I also think it maybe that certain breeds of dogs need different diets. It's possible that some breeds tolerate and thrive on a vegan grain based diet and others are not able too. Dogs are so diverse in their makeup that it does not seem likely that they all do well on the same food. roxanne there is an over abundance of pet rabbits in my area available for adoption and they make perfect veggie loving pets. My sister has one that found her when it was out lost. I just think they are under rated as pets but they are cetainly happy on a vegan diet. My sister's bunny is trained to come when called and uses a litter box. They are as domesticated as a cat and her bunny wanted a home not to be out where predators could get it.
