PETA's Letter to Iams Re. Massive Recall

The massive Iams pet food recall has been all over the news lately, and I've been hearing a lot about it from people who are concerned about their own animals. Anyway, I thought you’d like to see the letter we sent to Iams about it all. You can click here to read it, and I'll let you know if we get any more news. In the meantime, just in case there's any confusion about this: Please don't buy Iams until they get their act together and stop testing on animals.

Hello All! I don't think IAMS will ever change their method. They are owned by proctor and gamble the king of cruel animal testing. They animal test their products from shampoos to your tooth paste. They own tide pantene and much more. For me I make I buy from companies who prides crueltyfree dog food and also human stuff. Natural balance newmans and Halo never tests on animals. I wouldn't wait for Iams to stop testing to buy their product I'd rather buy from a company who's philosphy is crueltyfree from the start.

I think this is an appalling situation that immediately needs to be stopped!!Testing on animals is cruel and extremly wrong!!If anything the food stores should do is at least take this horrible product of their shelves!!!!I am 10 years old and it makes me very sad to hear what they are doing!!

I was appalled to learn of the Menu FoodsIams animal testing especially given the fact that they knew animals had already suffered and died after eating the food. What justification could they possibly offer for committing this heinous act of cruelty? All they had to do was run analyses of the product itself. I have used Iams foods for years but will never buy another product from them. My current pet family totals seven. My daugher has three dogs and my mother has one dog and two cats. Iams has lost our patronage for a total of thirteen animals plus all future family additions. I hope the companies involved are required to pay dearly for the dishonest and vicious way they responded to this crises.

James Peden's vegepet is the way to go everything is measured. If you had a son or daughter just born would you give a bagged or canned food for life exclusively if recommended? This is another example of the "holocaust" on animals. Science has not advanced beyond "fresh is best" when feeding dogs and cats. My animals thrived!! There was no such thing as that"dog smell" people refer to. I got into the habit of quickly smelling my hand after petting a new dog at the park and that smell always was an indicator of meatbased digest sprayed dog food. I'd like Peta to emphasize this MORE.

You think that you buy the best dog food on the market to keep your pets healthy. I can't believe this could happen. We lost our healthy 7 year old puppy and it sickens me to think that it could have been prevented. We fed her the Iams dry dog food. If the dry dog food is tainted WHY AREN'T THEY PULLING IT OFF THE SHELVES? They are pulling the wet and moist dog food but animals are still getting sick. Please Check into This matter. I am very saddened that we had to loose our little Angel unnecessarily as she was a very important member of our family and it could have been prevented. The Dry Iams dog food needs to be investigated before people even consider buying this product. Prevent precious little members of your family from getting deathly sick or from dying prematurely and unnecessarily.

I have heard of Iams testing on animals a few years ago from one of my PETA mags. Even if they SAY they'll stop testing on animals I will never buy their products ever again. Especially since I saw one of the videos on the testing that is done to dogs.

Sorry I have to add something Gerry my apologies I should have noticed that you're not new to homemade food obviously if you've done it for 15 years. But for anyone who is new to it or tries to make their cat a vegetarian without the help of a vet it can lead to heart failure blindness and other terrible things if not done absolutely right. Just a concern of mine.

Alexandra thank you for responding to my question. Your post gave me some good things to think about. I should mention that as a vet tech I get quick responses when I email pet food places because they know I can recommend their food to hundreds of people. When Wellness emailed me they also mentioned that they have a human food auditing company do quality inspections for their food. I do feel loathe to switch brands because I have seen my rescued strays most AIDS and leukemia positive thrive on Wellness. Gerry I know where you're coming from but scientifically "commercial" food has given dogs and cats the opportunity to live longer and longer lives. In vet practice I now see cats live well into their twenties. Yes homemade food is great but how do you know how much thiamine your cat is getting? Do you know that fish has thiaminase and can cause hyperthyorid disease in cats? How do you measure the amount of taurine that your dog gets? I can't imagine this is easy or practical for the average pet owner. Please work with a professional like a vet or a biologist if you are going to switch your pets' food. Thanks! Any more input on the Wellness situation is greatly appreciated.

People should never feed their dogs and cats ANY commercial food at all. I figured this out 15 years ago.

Unbelieveable!!! Absolutely unbelievable!! We trust our pets to a large corporation like Iams and to find out they tested the "perhaps" tainted food on other dogs and cats to "see" if they got sick or died made me almost vomit! What the hell are they thinking? Are these supposedely just animals that are from the local pound so they don't matter? What horrible decision makers and compassionate human beings NOT !!!!! Iams will be pulled from all my friends and family shelves as they have stated themselves after reading that article. Our pets are "gifts" to us to cherish and take care of. They would die for us and this is the thanks they get. IAMS NEVER AGAIN !!!!
