Ingrid Newkirk
"You can’t be a meat-eating environmentalist," PETA President Ingrid Newkirk says.

Earth Day is just around the corner, which means it's the perfect time to remind people who care about our planet and its inhabitants that factory farming is one of the biggest contributors to the most serious environmental problems. In fact, a recent United Nations report concluded that the meat industry causes almost 50 percent more greenhouse-gas emissions than all of the world's transportation systems—that's all the cars, trucks, SUVs, planes, and ships in the world combined!

The following are just a few ways to speak up for animals and the environment:

  • Post PETA's 30 reasons to go vegetarian on your MySpace page or personal blog to remind people that you can't eat meat and call yourself an environmentalist.
  • Contact the organizers of a local Earth Day festival and tell them that if they truly want to practice what they preach, they should only allow vendors to serve vegetarian food.
  • Host a potluck at work in celebration of Earth Day to show your coworkers how easy it is to be eco- and animal-friendly by choosing to eat vegetarian foods. Check out VegCooking.com for recipes, and be sure to have printouts available for coworkers who want to make your dish on their own!
  • Fill out this form to order our "Think Again" leaflets, which you can pass out at Earth Day festivals and post on bulletin boards at your favorite café or even at work.

Feel free to e-mail us if you would like to discuss other ways you can reach people with an animal rights message this Earth Day. We'd love to hear your ideas and pass on your stories to others who share your passion for speaking up for animals!
