Urge Chick-fil-A to Pull Cruel Elephant Ad!

Despite being informed about the cruelty inherent in using elephants and other wild animals in advertising, Chick-fil-A continues to run a commercial featuring an elephant. The elephant was reportedly provided by notorious exhibitor Have Trunk Will Travel (HTWT), a company that is currently under fire for abusing elephants. Earlier this year, Animal Defenders International released undercover video footage that shows trainers at HTWT as they use electric prods and bullhooks (metal-tipped devices that resemble a fireplace poker) to strike and jab elephants on their sensitive feet, legs, bellies, and mouths, causing the animals to scream in pain. In one particularly disturbing scene, a trainer is seen jabbing a sharp bullhook into the roof of a baby elephant’s mouth to get him to raise his head.

All of the elephants provided by HTWT were captured in the wild, and HTWT has sold at least two elephants to a traveling circus. In the wild, elephants walk up to 30 miles a day with their families. Elephants with HTWT are chained in place by one front foot and one back foot—all night, every night. In comments concerning federal policy changes related to training and handling practices for elephants, HTWT defended the cruel use of electric prods on elephants.

The American Humane Association (AHA), which is sometimes on set during the production of television commercials, only monitors animals when they are on set and does nothing to prevent behind-the-scenes abuse and neglect. The AHA does not monitor pre-production training, the living conditions of animals, premature separation of babies from their mothers, or the disposition of animals when they are no longer useful to trainers.

Please contact Chick-fil-A officials and politely ask them to stop running this commercial and to agree never to feature elephants or other wild animals in future advertising.
