Abused Elephants Forced to Perform in Canada Need Your Help!

Karnak Shriners have chosen exhibitor Tarzan Zerbini to provide and exhibit elephants for their circus, which plans to travel throughout Quebec beginning August 14. Please join PETA in urging the Karnak Shriners to require that Zerbini stage its performances without elephants.

Tarzan Zerbini Circus has a lengthy history of animal welfare violations. It has been cited more than two dozen times for Animal Welfare Act violations, including for keeping an elephant constantly chained, keeping elephants in an area that contained a solid waste pile that was approximately 8 feet wide and 4 feet tall, allowing waste to flow into a pond that the elephants had direct access to, and feeding elephants an unhealthy diet of nothing but bread, hay, and weeds.

Multi-ton elephants also pose a danger to humans. There have been six confirmed serious elephant attacks associated with Tarzan Zerbini and his daughter Patty—who is the elephant trainer and handler for the circus's Canada tour—resulting in two deaths. Most recently, an elephant exhibited by Patty grabbed the arm of a woman with his trunk and pulled her into the metal bars of his enclosure, resulting in a collapsed lung, liver and kidney lacerations, damage to her spleen, broken ribs, and a broken wrist. In addition, the elephants Tarzan Zerbini Circus is using have been exposed to the human strain of tuberculosis (TB), and the circus has repeatedly exposed elephants and the public to the risk of TB, which is highly transmissible from elephants to humans, even without direct contact.

Please take a few moments to ask Karnak Shriners to require that Tarzan Zerbini Circus stage its performances without elephants. A small amount of your time can make a big difference for animals.
