According to area residents, the city of Carson has hired a trapper to remove coyotes from the Carson Harbor Village Homeowner's Association. The coyotes were reportedly attracted to the area by pet food carelessly left outdoors. To make matters worse, the trapper hired by the city is reported to have used cruel snare traps to catch coyotes in other cities! When triggered, baited snares—composed of cable or wire—jerk tightly around the victims’ necks, faces, or limbs. Terrified animals then panic, badly injuring themselves in wild attempts to escape. Those snared by the neck can suffocate. Others will chew off their limbs in order to get free. Snares are also indiscriminate: “Nontarget” animals, including cats and dogs, can fall prey. Please contact the below officials and ask them to halt trapping, particularly with the use of snare traps. Ask them to focus on effective, humane methods instead, which include containing food sources and modifying the area to make it unattractive to coyotes. And please, forward this alert widely!Send polite comments to:The Honorable Jim DearMayor of the City of Carson jdear@carson.ca.usDavid BiggsCarson City Managerdbiggs@carson.ca.usRaymond CruzGeneral Manager, Public ServicesCity of Carsonrcruz@carson.ca.usPlease also contact the members of the Carson City Council using the following addresses: myfrancisone@yahoo.com and lholmes@carson.ca.us.Paul Randall, PresidentCarson Harbor Village Homeowners Associationpaul_randall@att.net
