PETA first contacted Target in 1999 to ask that it remove AquaBabies from its shelves. We sent countless follow-up letters and provided statements from experts describing why the tiny tanks are sorely inadequate for the fish, frogs, and snails imprisoned in them. We also posted action alerts and a feature on our Web site with this information, asking for letters and phone calls to the company. Target finally relented and followed the progressive example set by Walgreens, Eckerd, Rite Aid, Albertson's, Longs Drug Stores, and others by ending its sale of AquaBabies.

2008 - Target Stops Selling Foie Gras |
|
After a PETA member spotted foie gras (and a book promoting it) being sold on the Web site of retail giant Target, PETA sent a letter explaining the horrors of foie gras production and asking that the company stop selling it immediately. Target responded within a few days of PETA's letter to confirm that it had discontinued the sale of both items!
To make foie gras, a pipe is shoved down a duck's throat and up to 4 pounds of grain and fat are pumped into his stomach two or three times every day. The pipes puncture many birds' throats, sometimes causing the animals to bleed to death. This cruel procedure causes the birds' livers to become diseased and to swell to up to 10 times their normal size. The birds are then killed and their bloated livers are sold as foie gras.
Thanks to Target's compassionate decision, fewer birds will suffer this horrible fate. Learn more about how you can help fight the foie gras industry.

2003 - Tennessee Abuser Charged After Authorities Found Starving Puppies Cannibalizing Dead Puppies |
|
PETA received a complaint about emaciated puppies found cannibalizing puppy carcasses in a filthy dog pen in Tennessee Ridge, Tennessee. A vet stated that one of the live puppies was "underweight, anemic from worms, had an ear infection, and was suffering from Rickets--a condition brought on by a lack of proper nutrition."
We immediately called the district attorney and gave him the vet's statement. He charged the abuser with cruelty to animals, and the surviving pups were seized and taken in by a local rescue group for care and rehabilitation.
