2009 - L.A. Jiffy Lubes Drop Ringling Bros. Promotion

When PETA discovered that Jiffy Lube of Greater Los Angeles was giving away discounted Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus tickets with the purchase of an oil change, we immediately contacted the president of the Southern California cooperative. PETA explained that Ringling denies animals everything that is natural and important to them and beats them in the most sensitive parts of their bodies with whips and sharp, metal-tipped bullhooks. As a result, Jiffy Lube of Greater Los Angeles decided to end its relationship with Ringling.

2001 - Las Vegas Apartment Complex Stops Poisoning Pigeons

PETA received several complaints from residents at the Cypress Springs Apartment complex in Las Vegas about the use of Avitrol to poison pigeons. While the Avitrol Corporation claims that the product is a bird-dispersing agent, Avitrol is actually a potent poison that causes extremely painful deaths in birds and other animals who ingest a lethal dose. Residents at the apartment complex reported seeing birds screaming and fluttering during slow, agonizing deaths. We immediately sent a letter to the community managers asking them to stop poisoning pigeons and rely instead on humane bird-control methods. The following day, residents of Cypress Springs called to report that the poisoning program had been canceled.

2005 - Las Vegas Pigeons Saved From Painful Poison

Thanks to pressure from PETA, a Las Vegas apartment complex stopped using Avitrol to kill pigeons and other birds. Avitrol is a potent poison that attacks and impairs birds' nervous systems. Poisoned birds suffer from the slow shutdown of bodily functions for up to 15 hours before dying.

2001 - Las Vegas, Nevada, Area Parks End Fish Giveaways

PETA received a call from a former employee of North Las Vegas' Parks and Recreation Department, who reported to us that each year, on the opening day of the city's pools, hundreds of fish were dumped into the pools and children were given plastic bags with which to capture the fish and take them home. This event was almost assuredly a death sentence for the fish: Many died or were killed in the pool, and those who made it home were likely discarded once their novelty wore thin.

We contacted officials of the city's Parks and Recreation Department to ask that they consider the cruelty associated with this event and the negative message that it sends to children--that animals can and should be used on a whim. We also alerted the county's health department, city manager, and humane society.

The health department contacted each of the county's parks and recreation departments to alert them to the fact that dumping the fish into the pool is a violation of health codes. The departments are now strictly prohibited from holding such events in the future.

2009 - Levi Strauss & Co. Leaves Endangered Animals Out of Ads

After an incident in which a chimpanzee attacked a woman and left her with life-threatening injuries, PETA reached out to Levi Strauss & Co., which had featured an orangutan in a viral video in 2008. After learning about the abuse suffered by great apes and other exotic animals who are forced into the entertainment industry, Levi's prohibited the use of any endangered animals, including great apes, in the advertising and marketing of its products.
