About PETA > Hampton Roads Is for Animal Lovers

Hampton Roads Is for Animal Lovers

New in town? New to animal rights? Whether you’re a Hampton Roads native who's longing to make a difference or simply in search of healthy, humane cuisine, you've come to the right place! These pages give you information on local vegetarian-friendly restaurants, how to get active for animals in our community, the heads-up on events and opportunities for animal advocates in Hampton Roads, and more.

PETA's Community Animal Project

PETA is reaching out to animals and their guardians in the Hampton Roads area with our Community Animal Project. To help make animals' lives more comfortable, we donate warm hay and doghouses—often giving dogs the first dry bed they've ever had. To help save lives, we send out our mobile SNIP (Spay and Neuter Immediately, Please) truck, which offers low-cost or free spaying and neutering services for low-income families. Click here to learn more about SNIP services and fees.

Be an All-Weather Friend

Hot weather can be deadly for dogs left outside without shade or water. Learn how you can help Fido beat the heat during summer's “dog days” by clicking here. In the wintertime, animals left outside can suffer from frostbite, exposure, and dehydration when water sources freeze. Keep four-legged friends toasty when the weather turns frosty by visiting this link. Throughout the chilly months, you can pick up free straw for outdoor dogs at PETA’s headquarters, 501 Front Street in Norfolk.

Animal 911

Take a moment now to make important preparations to safeguard your animals when hurricanes, floods, or other natural disasters strike. For a safety checklist, visit our disaster preparedness Web page.

Local Animal Agencies

You’re behind the wheel when you spot a dog running along the road with no collar. You get the leash from your “Roving Rover Rescue Kit”—which also includes cans of dog and cat food, a blanket, and a cardboard cat carrier—and coax him or her over to your car. Now what? For information about animal control agencies and emergency veterinarians in the Norfolk and Hampton Roads area, click here.

Warm-Hearted Help Wanted

Do you yearn for work that offers meaningful challenges and more rewards than just a paycheck? Work for PETA as an employee or a volunteer, and create positive changes for animals and people. Click here for a complete listing of current job, intern, and volunteer opportunities.

Speak Out!

Want to promote humane education at your child's school? The speakers in PETA's Education Department are experts on a wide range of animal issues—whether it's dissection alternatives, the positive health effects of vegetarianism for children, or hidden cruelty behind the circus big top. Click here to learn more about PETA’s public speakers and how to schedule a speaking engagement.

In Town, In Style

Want to show your animal-friendly style around town? Check out the PETA Mall where you can choose from all sorts of animal-friendly gifts, from compassionate clothing to vegetarian cookbooks, to cruelty-free products, to toys that your animal companions will love you for!
